Their presidencies were just as undistinguished as mine was. But just because my first name happened to go out of fashion, I’m the butt of jokes while their memories lie quietly undisturbed by the ridicule of generations. “Can you believe a guy named Millard Fillmore was president? Haw haw!”

Case in point: when Woot told the world about an irate customer who demanded nonexistent black iPod earbuds, whose name did they use to maintain that customer’s privacy? That’s right, mine. And they kept it up the next time they sold an iPod. The really unfair part is, even from the afterlife, I actually DID know that Apple only makes white earbuds.

Today, they’ve managed to sell an iPod without mocking me. But I’m sure they’ll find some way to keep the Millard-hate going with this Philips GoGear 4GB Media Player. In true Woot fashion, they’ll look right past its 1.8” LCD and FullSound processing technology. They probably won’t even bother to tell people that the video playback isn’t that great and requires that you use the Philips media converter. Instead, they’ll fixate on one tiny detail – the black earbuds – and use that to keep this tired old inside joke going. Never mind that there’s a full-featured media player’s future at stake here.

Hey, I know the feeling. Does anybody remember that I was the guy who admitted California to the union, and opened trade with Japan, and founded the White House library? No, all they remember is my hilarious name. What I wouldn’t give to trade places with Chester A. Arthur.
