It’s the Circle of Rot

Do to your carrot tops what you wish you could do to Carrot Top

At last! An electric-powered heap of organic waste!

Check it out, the NatureMill Indoor Pro Edition composter from this year’s all-new XE series has, among other improvements, a stronger motor than ever.

Now, some of you skeptics out there are probably wondering why a pile of decomposing kitchen waste needs a motor at all. What could have lower power requirements than a mass of coffee grounds and melon rinds, slowly, passively turning into dark, rich, fertile soil? Why’s it an appliance at all? Aren’t most compost heaps just… heaps?

Well, excuuuse me, but electric power is my god-given right as an American, ever since Ben Franklin flew his kite, or Thomas Edison lit his first bulb, or Nikola Tesla plugged the amplifiers back in after his Five Man Acoustical Jam.

And anyway, I’m easing in to this whole save-the-Earth scene. You can’t expect me to change from a gas-guzzling, meat-eating, aerosol-spraying First-Worlder into a back-to-the-land type homesteading hippie overnight. I’m composting, that’s a start. For now, my compost bin will be electric powered, OK? Be glad it doesn’t run on burning coal. Or spotted owl blood. Or the tears of Iron Eyes Cody.

Besides, I just redid the kitchen with stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, the works. So I wanted a composter that would go with that vibe. One that would impress the ladies. The NatureMill Pro XE fits the bill, with its odor-eliminating lifetime carbon filter, oxygenating fan, easy cleaning and maintenance, and 120-pound monthly capacity. It knocks their socks off. An old-fashioned compost heap can’t do that. Honestly, you ever hear of a chick swooning at the sight of just a plain old pile of grass clippings in the yard? (If so, can I get her number?)

Yeah, I’m not ready to compost off the grid. I need a compost bin that fits my modern lifestyle. That’s the NatureMill Pro XE all over. And hey, it offers improved energy savings over last year’s model!

Also much, much worse energy savings than the traditional outdoor heap model, that’s true.

Features

Warranty: 3 Year NatureMill

Features:

  • All-new for 2010, the improved XE Series boasts a stronger motor, a more powerful filter, further energy savings, quieter operations, among other new features
  • Capacity of 120 lbs organic waste per month
  • (3) Different Modes: Regular, Energy Save, and Heavy Duty
  • Natural compost cultures consume waste quickly, without garbage odors (produces a mild aroma like sourdough, mushrooms, or straw)
  • A fan draws air into the machine, providing oxygen to the cultures
  • A powerful carbon filter removes any lingering odors (lifetime filter – never needs replacement)
  • Keep it in the kitchen, a garage, or laundry room
  • Use it outdoors, even in the snow, rain, or freezing temperatures (keep power supply dry, using a weather rated power outlet—not included)
  • More than 70% of the initial waste disappears—compost cultures convert it into water vapor. What’s left is a very concentrated compost fertilizer (fresh compost has a mild organic aroma, which people often describe as damp wool, sourdough bread, or mushrooms)
  • Food compost is very high in nitrogen, which is essential for healthy plants
  • NatureMill Composter can safely compost pet droppings, organic kitty litter, and hamster cage bedding (temperatures inside the machine reach or exceed 140 degrees F (60 degrees C), which destryoys almost all harmful bacteria)
  • Use it on your garden, lawn, shrubs, trees, or indoor potted plants
  • One batch of compost is enough for 10-40 sq ft. (1-4 sq m) of a lawn or garden, applied once or twice per year (or use one batch per tree)
  • Infuse mature compost with water to brew “compost tea” liquid fertilizer
  • Energy use is just 5 kWh/month, or about $0.50/month (depending on local rates)—less than a garbage truck would burn in diesel fuel to haul away the same waste
  • A NatureMill composter recycles its weight in waste every 10 days, diverting over two tons of waste from landfills over its life. This reduces emissions of methane, a harmful greenhouse gas produced when organic matter decomposes in oxygen-starved landfills
  • NatureMill Composter is made from recycled and recyclable materials
  • Every NatureMill Composter meets or surpasses the stringent California Energy Efficiency Level IV —the most stringent energy standard in the world
  • Made in the USA

How it Works: (Click Here to Watch NatureMill Video)

  • Deposit food waste any time, any day – up to 120 lbs (55kg) per month
  • For best results, cut items into small pieces
  • Balance the chemistry EVERY TIME YOU ADD FOOD by adding sawdust pellets to increase “brown” content, and baking soda to reduce acidity (both are included)
  • Motor mixes every (4) hours
  • Items remain in the upper chamber under optimal composting conditions: mixing, air flow, heat, and moisture
  • The energy released destroys odors, pathogens, and seed germination
  • It is later transferred through a trap door to the lower cure tray, where it continues to compost while you add fresh items to the upper chamber (Click Here to See Diagram)
  • Empty the cure tray when the indicator light comes on – roughly every two weeks
  • Use the fertilizer immediately, or leave it in a heap until you are ready to garden
  • Spread over the soil surface, like mulch. Nutrients will gradually enter the soil during watering and annual tilling

Technical Specifications:
