Consarn it to heck!

It’s a shame about Blu-ray.

Curse you, Sellout.Woot!

Curse you to the torments of one thousand hells!

May you break out in sores which fester and putrify! May your eyes be always itchy! May all your calls be dropped! May you come home from a fancy party and look in the mirror to discover a fleck of basil that has apparently between your front teeth the whole evening long!

I put off watching my first Blu-ray disc for years hoping it would be a passing fad. A flash in the pan. A Mambo No. 5. But finally, two weeks ago, I saw ROGUE (2007) on Blu-ray at a friend’s house, and it convinced me I had to buy in. The picture is just so much better! There’s no going back to DVD after you see that.

And it should be safe now anyway, right? By now I can assume it’s got some staying power as a media format, can’t I? The Japanese prototypes came out way back in 2003. Players have been on the market officially here since 2006. Obviously this format has legs, right? Because I already own THE BEASTMASTER on VHS, LaserDisc and DVD. So I don’t need a fourth copy unless it’s going to be my ne plus ultra copy, you know what I mean?

So I decided it was time to pull the trigger on one of these things. And I started my long, slow, deliberative process of comparison shopping, which involves a lot of research, and polling my friends, and visiting big-box retail stores to lay my hands on the things themselves, and ritualistically burning a one-dollar bill as a sacrifice to St. Floyd of Gatlinburg, the patron saint of getting a good deal.

BUT NOW LOOK WHAT YOU’VE DONE, Sellout.Woot! You’re selling a Memorex Blu-ray player? With integrated Wi-Fi for streaming online content? And it up-converts DVDs, too? And it’s available here? For cheap?

You perfidious, pustulent polecats! You greasy mound of malodorous sleaze! How could you?

This can only mean one thing, Sellout.Woot.

It can only mean Blu-ray players are on their way out.

What is BD-Live?

BD-Live is an interactive and still-quite-exclusive Blu-ray feature. BD-Live allows the viewer to download and store exclusive content such as actors' profiles, trailers, background stories, or even games related to the movie. And there's a pleasant side effect to having an Internet connection: Many Blu-ray players can download updates for their software when they become available - this saves you the bother of manually downloading the software and burning it onto a CD.  One interactive feature is the "CineChat" function. Here, viewers can use BD-Live's Internet connection to chat with other viewers and exchange thoughts on the movie as it progresses. The text comments are sent via an on-screen keyboard or via the home PC.
