Not Seen On TV
It seems like every time I look at that one network dedicated to cooking shows, it’s nothing but cooking shows, cooking shows, and more cooking shows! There’s one that focuses on down-home comfort foods, one that focuses on dishes for entertaining, and one that’s all about foods from different parts of the world. There’s one where a celebrity chef challenges high-school lunch ladies to a cafeteria cook-off, and even one where a guy will only eat stuff he can catch in a net.
You would think with all this variety, there would be a show that suits my taste! But there straight-up isn’t. Not on TV, anyway.
That’s why I’m so glad I found Real-Time Cooking With Me, Bradley Ashenfelter, which is on my Euro-Pro stainless steel convection oven every weeknight. The deal with this show is that it doesn’t use any of the fast-paced, disorienting, attention-deficit-inducing production techniques of modern television—you know, like all that jump-cutting they do, and tinkering with the playback speed, and the high-energy music they use. Just a couple minutes of a typical non-fiction cable television show, and I’m usually ready to hyperventilate.
But on Real-Time Cooking With Me, Bradley Ashenfelter, I get to watch every dish undergo the complete cooking process in real time! No edits, no camera trickery, just the slow, subtle story of how the cheese atop a twelve-inch pizza (for example) gradually goes all melty. I find it relaxing.
Of course, I have found that if I fall asleep watching and leave Real-Time Cooking With Me, Bradley Ashenfelter on for several hours, I run some risk of burning my house down.
Still, better that than a half-hour of Rachael Ray, am I right?
