This Limited Edition Dyson would be worth so much more if the previous owners had kept it in its original box.

Jeez! Don’t people know ANYTHING about vacuum-cleaner collecting? The second you remove a vacuum cleaner from the manufacturer’s packaging, it loses like half its value. If I show up with an unboxed, refurbished Dyson DC25 Blueprint Limited Edition, I’ll be the laughingstock of Vac-UU-Con 2011.

Think of it as an investment. All you have to do is store this Dyson DC25 in a climate-controlled, hermetically-sealed collecting room for, say, 25 years and then you can sell it for up to several percentage points in profit. If this was still in the original box, it would remain a Limited Edition collectible. Now, it’ll just degenerate into a 25-year-old used vacuum cleaner whose Root Cyclone suction technology and smooth-steering Ball, so impressive back in 2011, are nothing compared to whatever futuristic vacuum technology 2036 will bring.

By the way, if you’re interested in speculative vacuum-cleaner fiction, I highly recommend my novel, The Dust of Alphapolis. But anyway, what’s done is done, I guess. Somebody just HAD to open the box, and then send it back to Dyson to be refurbished. Sure, it still works just as well as a brand new one. So what? As you can tell by looking around here, keeping the floor clean is not exactly my highest priority.
