Citizens On Video
What Hollywood giveth, Hollywood taketh away. Back in more innocent times – 2006, I think it was – Tinseltown was abuzz over rumors of a new Police Academy movie. Of course, as the editor of the web’s third-largest Police Academy fan fiction site, I got caught up in the hoopla. I couldn’t wait to catch up with my old friends Sweetchuck, Hightower, and Tackleberry. I daydreamed about who they’d trick into visiting the Blue Oyster. I went to bed every night with the sweet sounds of Sgt. Larvell “Motor Mouth” Jones whirring, bleeping, and conking in my ears, and not just because I fell asleep with one of the PA movies on again. Hijinks, I was certain, were about to ensue.
Well, we all know how that turned out. Or should I say, didn’t turn out. Petty studio infighting, political correctness, and the almighty dollar kept Police Academy 8 just a beautiful dream. Those stalwart and hilarious law-enforcers were last seen languishing in development purgatory, where there’s nobody to laugh at their hilarious antics except for ghosts and skeletons. Curse you studio cretins! Burn, Hollywood, burn!
But then I asked myself: what would Carey Mahoney do?
The answer was clear. I don’t have to wait for somebody else to write the next chapter in the saga. My Canon ZR100 and my true appreciation of the Police Academy mythos make me a far more worthy custodian of the PA legacy than some hack director just doing it for the paycheck. With the Canon ZR100’s 20x optical zoom, hi-res 16:9 widescreen recording mode, and sharp, vibrant DIGIC DV images, I can dare to dream of crafting a film worthy of the Police Academy name. So I’m going for it! Hold on, officers of D Squad – help is on the way!
I bought several police uniforms on clearance after Halloween, my ‘91 Neon is at the paint shop as we speak, and I’ll be done with the script as soon as I decide if the bad guys are Colombian cocaine smugglers or Russian white slavers. No, I probably can’t get the original cast. But since when has that ever stopped a Police Academy sequel?
