Aha, at last, a camcorder that fits my production budget! I’ve been looking for days, man; I’m finally ready to shoot the most ambitious project in the history of the Ypsilanti film scene: A shot-for-shot remake of Evan Almighty with snack foods in every role. It stars “Steve Caramel” and a cast of hundreds of animal crackers.

The Canon ZR100’s high-resolution 16:9 recording mode is going to be perfect for this. It’ll give my film a true widescreen aspect ratio for that blockbuster feature look. And its high-quality image stabilization system will help me recreate the sweeping tracking shots, even though I don’t have a steadicam or a crane or anything. I’m gonna do ‘em on rollerblades, I think.

Let me tell you something I learned from making Cans Can Can-Can, my 1999 short about the heyday of Montmartre, in which the dancers were portrayed by actual canned foods. (Mostly chickpeas.) When you’re working with grocery-sized performers, you shoot a lot of close-ups. The ZR100’s innovative Skin Detail Function automatically softens details, giving you an image that’s a lot more complimentary to your subject. Little “Steve Caramel” is going to appreciate that, especially after he starts to go a bit sticky under the lights.

Oh, I’m stoked. I spent most of this afternoon laboriously storyboarding this thing, man. Watching Evan Almighty, pausing it every so often and printing a screenshot… it was a lot of work.

But it’s all going to be worth it now that I’m finally ready to shoot. It’s going to be awesome, dude. And I swear I’m going to do it. I’m going to shoot the whole thing. I just have to make sure to stay exactly this high for the duration of production.
