If I’ve heard the question once, I’ve heard it a thousand times: “Dude, how do you have such impeccable taste in music? What is your secret?” I always laugh with a modest little wave of the hand, then look in the mirror and reply, “It’s simple, really. I only listen to music that’s at least 20 years old.” I figure time is a better judge of music than I am, and if something is still a critical favorite 20 years on, it’s gotta be good. Laugh if you want, but I’m not the one with those Tapes ‘n’ Tapes and Cocorosie discs befouling my home.

But when it comes to technology, I embrace the now and walk the nose, with a side order of digging the new. That’s why I’m facing 2008 with the Altec Lansing M604 Zune Speaker. I can hook up my Zune, or any of my second-string MP3 players, and kick out the digital jams in rich, flavorful style. All those old songs I love have never sounded better, reaffirming my “let it age” approach to music.

Speaking of which, pretty soon I can start listening to stuff recorded in 1988. Let’s see what was in the charts…Rick Astley…George Michael…the Escape Club…oooh, the Beach Boys have a new song called “Kokomo”, that oughtta be good…looks like everybody loved some song called “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”...man, I just can’t wait to discover all this great new music!
