Penny Vidful
What, you never heard of VCD? Oh, it’s big in Asia. No, it’s not something you catch from the party girls of Bangkok, and it has nothing to do with the Vietcong. It stands for Video CD, and it’s the format of choice for Hong Kong shoot-em-ups, weepy Punjabi soap operas, and pirated camcorder-shot versions of current theatrical films. Wherever in the developing world there’s a need for fast, cheap video duplication, you’ll find the trusty VCD.
But even a red-white-and-blue-blooded, all-American, hotwing-munching video-watcher like you can get in on the VCD act, provided your DVD player will play them (and most do). And you can roll your own with this here ADS USBAV-190 Instant Video CD doo-dangle. It can capture images and sound from just about any video or audio source and transfer it to your PC through the USB 2.0 connection. From there, it’s all aboard the VCD express. Next stop: cheap, not-especially-high resolution VCD nirvana. You can also trick it up to turn your camcorder into a webcam, share videos on the web, or use it for video conferencing. But even though we don’t ship outside the U.S., we won’t be too surprised if many of these wind up helping to launch the careers of budding bootleg impresarios on the other side of the Pacific.
