This junk isn't very funny at all.

Sometimes it helps to re-examine an issue from a different light.

We don't know if you've followed the kerfluffle online, but lately people are kind of uppity about things like copyright infringement, plagiarism, and just plain stealing crap. We're not getting into all the horrible stuff Congress wants to do; we're referring specifically to a couple of people who just like to steal.

Now everyone's quick to (rightfully) point at them in righteous indignation and scream, "THIEVES! WORTHLESS, NO GOOD THIEVES! YOU HAVE NO HONOR!" This being the Internet, of course, that gets abbreviated to "lol u r teh sux0r" or something much more profane. But maybe it's not their fault?

Wait, that's ridiculous. Of course it's their fault. But maybe they didn't know any better.

It's plausible! Well, it's possible, anyway. This is the Internet Generation we're talking about; these kids grew up never knowing of a world without broadband internet connections. They've never even seen a free AOL CD. Maybe they look at stuff like this Sansui 19" 720p LCD HDTV and watch programs in HD with a 1000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and think the television just takes funny stuff from wherever and shows it to them.

So let's try to clear it up for any befuddled website admins or, heaven forbid, a lawyer dumb enough to ruin his career with threats of extortion over this sort of thing. Just because you see some funny junk somewhere on the Internet doesn't mean you get to take it. That stuff you see on the TV? Someone paid for that stuff. Your TV isn't a magic thievery box that rips other people's hard work out of the thin air and puts it in front of your big dumb face to enjoy. Someone makes it, someone else buys it (or pays them to make it in the first place), and then they get to show it with credits so everyone knows who was cool enough to think something like that up.

We're just trying to avoid a painfully embarrassing scenario in which some fool goes tilting at windmills trying to convince the creators of TV shows they should pay HIM for the privilege of having their work stolen. You'd have to be a real moron to try it, but the thing about morons is they rarely fail to disappoint.

Top Comments are discussion forum posts we have deemed worthy of your time. Listen, we get a lot of comments, and most of the time, it's pretty forgettable stuff; but sometimes you rise to the top like butterfat in milk. We don't recommend you base your self-worth on how often we feature your comments, but we don't expressly forbid it either.
