Uptown, Downton
"Father," said the young Lady Salad Fork with stern-yet-laughing eyes, "Surely we could leave Dishwasher Abbey in the care of the teaspoons for a time?"
The stern-yet-kind Lady Dinner Fork, matron of Dishwasher Abbey, scoffed. "Leave Dishwasher? Oh! Never have I heard such a thing!"
"Mama is right, little one." Lord Dinner Knife stood by the fireplace with a snifter of brandy. "There's always been a Mikasa Flatware here in this dishwasher, and I mean to see there always will be."
"And teaspoons! The idea of it! Why, next you'll suggest an AMERICAN should move in!"
"She might not, Mama, but I will."
Lady Dinner Fork held a gloved had to her mouth as one Serving Fork walked into the library. Lady Salad Fork shifted; he was ever so handsome and tall.
"This is our savior, my dears. Serving Fork brings with him a sizable fortune he made in the Colonies, if you will excuse my little joke, Serving Fork."
Serving Fork smiled politely. "Call it a winner's largess, my dear friend!"
Lord Dinner Knife chuckled politely. "Once our two families are joined, we'll never have to leave Dishwasher again. Nor will our children, or our children's children, or-"
"Joined?" asked young Lady Dinner Spoon with a look of horror. "You mean- I am to WED this ... this SERVANT?"
"Serving Fork, my dear," Lord Dinner Knife politely corrected. "And he's a very wealthy piece of flatware!"
"I don't care," answered Lady Dinner Spoon. "I don't care!" And she ran from the room on the edge of tears.
Lord Dinner Knife sighed. "Dreadfully sorry, Serving Fork. She'll come around."
Serving Fork nodded with a smile. A smile that he found unexpectedly reflected in the eyes of Lady Salad Fork across the room! As the teaspoons began to prepare the table, Serving Fork surreptitiously shifted his place card to bring him closer to the lovely piece of cutlery he hoped he'd soon grow to know. And she would never need know about the Serving Spoon he'd left behind in San Francisco, just as his wife would never need know about his time in Dishwasher Abbey.
Lady Dinner Fork sniffed. "I just hope, Serving Fork, for your sake, you're familiar with high society."
Serving Fork smiled. "Though I may not be as well-bred as you Mikasas, I am quite sure of one thing."
"And what's that?" Lady Dinner Fork asked calmly. Serving Fork smiled.
"My dear lady, I always know which fork will serve my needs the best."
