Small But Mighty - Perfect for Shower & Travel
By MrJoe on Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2025
I bought the JBL Go 4 in March 2025 on Amazon, mainly for use in the shower, and I’ve been seriously impressed. For such a small, ultra-portable speaker, it delivers amazing sound quality with surprisingly punchy bass. It gets plenty loud, although you may notice a bit of distortion at the highest volume levels - nothing unexpected for a speaker of this size. Bluetooth connection is solid, and the range has been more than sufficient whether I’m using it in the bathroom or outside. The battery life has been excellent - I haven’t tested the full 7-hour limit since I usually top it off before then, but it’s never come close to dying on me. Charging is fairly quick, depending on the charger you’re using. I’ve also taken it with me on a camping trip, and it proved to be rugged enough to handle outdoor use. It held up great in wet and dusty conditions, and has handled regular use in the shower without any issues. So I’d say the waterproofing holds up well based on my experience. The build quality feels premium with a grippy rubberized housing that’s easy to hold, and the compact size makes it perfect to toss in a bag or hang on a hook. I didn’t buy it for the recycled materials, but it’s a nice bonus to know it’s made with sustainability in mind. I’m giving the Go 4 a solid 5 stars because it truly delivers on sound, durability, and portability for the price. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a dependable shower speaker or something to use on a camping trip where you want clear sound without being disruptive to others nearby. It just works.

Fair on its own, horrible as a family

If you're buying this as an individual product, it's 4 stars. The thing I would dock it on is the audio quality which is good but not for the price. The EQ is helpful in allowing you to improve things but that only goes so far. All in all, as an individual product, it's good and I'd recommend it if you have the money (although there are probably comparable options for less). However, if you're buying this as a system, it's shameful. What I mean by "system" is the Bluetooth Auracast feature allowing you to connect many speakers together. In short, it's almost fine - but for the price you pay for these devices, it should be wonderful. Firstly, you remember that decent EQ I mentioned in the individual product paragraph? Kiss that goodbye. You have ABSOLUTELY NO eq control when using the auracast feature, meaning you can only use the mediocre settings in their default EQ. This is not a technology limitation, it's poor design. When I configure the EQ on a speaker, it should override the default settings. Unacceptable. Then, volume control - horrid. I purchased three of JBL's speakers: charge, flip, and go. Obviously these speakers have different output capacities so if you crank them all up to 100%, the charge would be loudest and the go would be the quietest. However, each speaker has volume buttons on it that you can use to set the audio level manually. This works, but as soon as you touch the volume on the source devi, they all sync back up to the same level. So, if the little go was your host device, and you had it at 50% with the others at 20%, and you decided you wanted the volume a little quieter, as soon as you bump the Go down to 45%, the other speakers sync and get LOUDER. And MUCH LOUDER, because they are much bigger. You have the same issue in the other direction. The final sin JBL has committed is using the Auracast name. This is a new Bluetooth standard, sort of like USB is a standard. Isn't it nice that any phone with Bluetooth can stream to any speaker or headphone that uses it? It is. And you would think Auracast would be the same, right? Where you could buy speakers from many companies and they could all participate seemleesly? Well, you'd be wrong. This is a JBL standard. They have basically just rebranded their prior proprietary connection system under the Bluetooth name. Gross. All in all, I cannot recommend this product. If you are looking for an alternate, I recently purchased Soundcore's new floating speaker, and the audio quality of that device is better than JBL's while being priced cheaper (and with superior water performance and other features). I unfortunately threw all the packaging for these devices away so I can't return them (my mistake, I figured with how much money I was paying I couldn't go wrong...). I am planning on selling these online somewhere. If you absolutely insist on buying these, I would recommend not mixing different sizes of speakers. Buy all charges, or all flips, or all gos. This will alleviate the volume control issue a bit, but not the others.
