Long Battery life, clear and loud sound reproduction even with hearing protection
By Troy, just troy. on Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2024
- Summary - If looking for earphones to allow you to listen to books/music while wearing ear protection or not, look no further. These are an excellent option that don't weigh you down but still get the sound into your ears clearly. If looking for bone conduction earphones, these are an excellent option. Review (long and detailed) - I'm comparing these to JBL "Tune TWS" in ear buds as they're what I'm used to as a baseline of rather high expectations. My use is listening to audiobooks about 5-8 hours a day. - Straight off, impressed by the packaging. A lift top box inside a sleeve and everything packed similar to a new phone, including a USB-A to USB-C charging cable under the little tray. Instructions/quick start is what you see straight off. - Excellent Range/Reception from phone, over twice the range of in ear JBL buds, about 30ft away before it started cutting out, while with the smaller bud devices leaving the room would cause signal to cut out. - Amazing battery life - earphone charge reports 70% after 4 hours of listening to high volume audiobook, then 30% after 8 total hours. For comparison, The JBL buds started out working at most 4.5 hours when new and are now closer to the 3 hour mark after a year of daily use.I no longer have to pause 20 minutes for recharge. I do not have longevity reporting on the bone conduction devices but will update if battery lifetime is abnormal. - Clear and easy to understand instructions and diagrams. The instructions are printed on card stock in English so they're not easy to lose and no need to page through a dozen languages and require a magnifying glass to read. The instructions have large and clear font and diagrams which makes getting started a snap. - Easy to find control nub button, not a touch sensitive capacitive contact which works well to not trigger while positioning them on ear, though it needs two fingers to activate, one to hold the top of ear bow to get leverage to push in the button Nub switch. Prevents accidental triggering, but makes intentional triggering a bit more involved than a swipe. - Very light and well balanced overall. Each earpiece weighs about 8.5 grams, 17 grams for both. Their charging pod/case is slim and fits easily into an extra pocket of backpack, jacket, or pants, it seems well built and could take a lot of squeezing to break. The Charging/storage case for the earpieces weighs 76 grams with both earphones in it, so battery/case is 60 g without buds, it is very light but feels quite sturdy. - Bass is reproduced though I couldn't find a perfect position for the bone conduction to get both bass and treble even, while letting them stand off most of the area naturally which gave good sound quality for narration. Sound quality is great for bone conduction, the bass isn't super punchy but midrange and treble are very crisp and clear easier to understand than the ear buds I used before. I believe the lack of bass to be my error in positioning as it certainly feels like it is reproducing bass very well because it tickles ear if positioned wrong and the vibrations can easily be felt wit finger so it's trying to provide bass, I'll chalk this up to user error. - Great for work in an ear protection environment. They grip onto ear very well and hold on through moderate activity. These work fine if you need to wear ear plugs and/or muffs for OSHA ear protection compliance. I found wearing muff hearing protection actually makes the sound better. Might be the shape of my ear, it's making an optimal bone connection. - Downside - the only major downside I've seen in any regard is lack of customization of button and audio controls. Still has volume/seek/play/pause functions, but they're fixed. There's no app that controls these earbuds the way some others do which give you everything from custom button press sequence options to equalizer. - Wish list - Would like an extra feature, something similar to JBL "Ambient Aware" where the outside microphone is loudness limited then coupled directly to the driver so that you can easily hear what people are saying while wearing ear protection. The other features would be equalizer and "Find my device" which emits a loud beep from earpiece to locate it (see above regarding app) - Final thoughts - NO regrets with this set, there are a lot of upsides, especially when working around ear protection such as loud work environments where other devices aren't allowed at all since OSHA approved bluetooth earbuds don't exist in the realm of affordable. I am very happy with them so far and will update this if any of the information becomes erroneous. Well beyond expectations

Pictured above is where bone conduction headphones are supposed to be. These are bone conduction! However they are not designed to sit properly in front of the ear canal on the cheekbone. I got it to stay there but I had to really fight with it to get it to stay just perfect. The part of the unit that touches your skin is smooth which is clearly an oversight, it should have a little texture to it so it helps it stay in place. When I got it to stay where it belongs I still had to gently press it into my skin a little bit to really hear it clearly even with my phone volume maxed out. It's just not the technology of shockz. I gave it three stars because they really tried it's not junk but it's not what you want to be. I have a pair of shockz And they are great but they are cumbersome to travel with I can't just put that giant case in my pocket. I also liked the idea of wearing one side at a time and not having that band around the back of my head. All of the reasons that you looked at this but it just doesn't deliver on the actual audio distribution to your brain. :-(
