Set It and Forget It
By Jon Hempstead on Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2025
I've had this unit for a few years. What I can say about it is that it works. I just works. It's easy to set up and returns to the charging station every time to empty and charge itself. I have a J9+ Combo and for whatever reason, this J7 tends to work better in that it rarely if ever, needs saving. It never seems to get caught on anything or stuck somewhere. It does the job of vacuuming and does it well. It avoids objects that the kids leave around. I truly don't have to spend much time thinking about this unit. I have it vacuum every single day and the waste bag needs to be changed maybe every couple of months, if that. They seem to last way longer than iRobot says they should and that's with 2 cats and this thing cleaning up litter near a litterbox. This particular model is truly a set it and forget robot vacuum for me.

Not so great with pets.

The price was good since it was a refurb -- the machine was either very fully refurbed or most likely never even used so no problem with the refurb. So not really risk in that regard. The WiFi is bit fiddly but works with both 2.4G and 5G. I set mine up on a guest 5G network with intERnet access out intRAnet access. It seems to work this way fine this way and keeps it off regions of the network it has no need to access. The first map it came up with on its own was not great. It doesn't like to start by pressing the button. When it did start with the button, it had trouble LEAVING the dock (usually the problem with a vacuum is getting docked not undocking). It did start fine via the app. It entered into a region that was on the edge of the map and seemed to confuse it and got stuck (had to help it out). I am hoping a new mapping run will straighten this out. It's surprisingly not a whole better at cleaning than the ancient shark that it is meant to replace. At least it doesn't crash it things so that is good. Had an opportunity to test it on dog poop evasion it failed, but it does avoid other items. It uses replaceable vacuum bag/filter combo which is good but it is not a reusable item like the separate container/filter setup used with other vacuums. It came with two bags. You can buy vacuum bags in lots of 12 or more on Amazon. I am not yet certain how quickly these bags will fill but given my experience with other vacuums, I am very doubtful that with daily use they will go over one week especially with pet hair. Finally, the item is supposedly a j7+ with mopping but I did not get any mopping pads at all and the mopping hardware seems to be absent. So not a mop despite being called out as such.
