Just not for me

Having owned Yamaha’s prior two sets, I was really looking forward to these. Being a bass head, I was hoping more for a sound comparable to the E700A. Unfortunately, I found the bass lacking. This is not to say they don’t have excellent sound. I have never heard piano as crisp and vibrant on a set of headphones, as with these. Jazz was superb sounding. Instrumentation comes out crisp and distinct. With the multiple genres I tried, voice was clean, instruments sounded great, just not enough low end for me. Yamaha, it seems, is going after the audiophile market with these. The updated app allows for some tweaking. I just would have preferred if they gave the same sound choices as the L700A. I found the noise cancellation improved and great for around work. I really hated to return these, but I really enjoy bass. I found an excellent alternative in the sennheiser momentum 4.

These remind me a lot of the Beats Studio 3. They are on-the-ear headphones, not over-the-ear. The latter style being better for comfort and sound quality which is what I expect in this price range. The sound quality is not great. The ANC is passable: better than Studio 3, which is so subtle to the point of not knowing when it's on, and not as powerful as the XM4, which is so overbearing it makes my eyes water. The design is attractive, but detracted by being overly bulky. They look odd on the head. The materials these are made of are oddly satisfying to the touch. I love the buttons. Great design. They're uncomfortable to wear, which is the killer of headphones. I'm pretty happy with the discount: I got them for 70% off ($100), but would never pay full price for these bad boys.
