Geometry changed, raised heel caused hamstring injury
By ShopAction on Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2023
I have been wearing Asics Kayanos for 23 years now and it has been my ONLY pair or running shoes since that time. While training for a 10-mile race this year, my last pair of Kayanos (Version 27) started to wear out, so it was time for a new pair. I ordered the new version (29) and was VERY excited to receive this new pair in Metropolis/White color. I wore the shoes on daily commute for a few days to break them in, then I took it on a short run (2 miles); they generally felt good, but I felt very minor knee and back pain. I figured it was because my body was adjusting to a new shoe and brand new cushioning. Then I did a six mile run, which felt pretty good, but my hamstring was unusually sore. I had not felt this amount of soreness in my hamstring before. I took several days off, and then went for a 9-mile run when my legs felt pretty good. Within my first mile, I pulled my hamstring... A very painful injury... then limped back to the car to go home quite confused. I rehabed my hamstring for 4 weeks, switching back to my Kayanos 27 during that time, suspecting something off with these new shoes. I finished training for my race, and ran a 10-mile race with my Kayanos 27. One week after the race, with my legs feeling fantastic, I figured it was time to break-in the Kayanos 29 because the Kayanos 27 were worn out. I set out for a 5-mile run, and again... at 2.7 miles pulled the hamstring again. Limped back to the car again, this time less confused and committed to research why these shoes were injuring me. I am 100% convinced that the geometry of this shoes place greater pressure on the hamstring. I feel that my heel is higher and the roll of the shoe (the curvature of the sole) also accentuates pressure on the hamstring. While I do appreciate that Asics is ALWAYS trying to innovate and improve their shoes, they should NOT be changing the geometry of shoe models. Each model has a purpose and a following of people who use them because they fit their running needs. I bet that the vast majority of Kayano runners would prefer that ASICS stop messing with the shoe... Update the colors and fabric, but leave the shoe ALONE! If you want to innovate in the geometry, make a new model... Don't incorporate it in an existing model and hoodwink people to think that it's the same shoe... My experience shows that it's dangerous, and I'll be dealing with some form of hamstring pain or tightness for the rest of my life now. ASICS should be an enabler of exceptional running, not experimenting on runners by changing geometry and selling it as the same models. I wish I could just buy the same Kayano 27, or any of the previous Kayanos, exactly as they were when brand new. I don't need new model or new tech or new geometry. Obviously, I am NEVER using the 29 model again, and I am going to find a new brand that doesn't keep messing with my geometry. It's been a good run for 23 years ASICS, but now I am out.
