Almost Perfect Dock for my M2 MAX Macbook Pro
By Cory Caplan on Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2023
I just upgraded a decade-old Macbook to the latest and greatest. I was looking for a dock that would deliver sufficient power to power/charge a high-end Macbook, drive my external monitor, and have at least 4 USB-A and 2 TB3/4 connections (besides the host connection). The QGeeM T4801 might be the only dock that does. Luckily, it not only met the requirements, it's been a stable, solid performer. I connect my OWC external drive dock via USB 3.1 Gen 2, and a Samsung NVME in an Acasis enclosure via Thunderbolt 3/4. I have a mouse, keyboard, and tablet connected to the dock, and when I plug. in the host cable to the Macbook, all USB and Thunderbolt devices and drives work and mount immediately. I have a QHD (2560×1440) display that runs at 75hz and it works perfectly as far as I can tell. I've experienced no dropouts, and the display pops right up when the dock is connected. The QGeeM dock comes with a USB-C-to-Displayport adapter, but I did not test it. Wake on keyboard works. Wake on mouse click works. I'm not sure if its supposed to wake on mouse movement, but it does not. This could be an expected limitation or it could be my mouse, but it's no sweat using a button to wake. The audio output seems to work fine. I have no basis for testing the quality of the output, and I don't have a microphone to test the 1/8" connector. I did not test the SD/microSD card readers, but they're redundant as my macbook has a built-in SD slot. I'm sure they work fine. I included screen shots of the Blackmagic disk test of my Thunderbolt NVME. I tested it while connected to the dock, and then connected directly to the Macbook. There was essentially no difference between the two. To test power drain, I fully maxed out the system by running 'Endurance' CPU test at 100% utilization as well as repeating Geekbench 6 GPU test simultaneously. I used the 'High Power' mode under battery options in system preferences. When GPU & CPU were at full system utilization, my battery did begin to drain significantly. Repeatedly running the GPU test alone in high performance seemed to slowly drain the battery, too, although much more slowly than running both. I guess there's a reason the Macbook ships with a 140W power supply. In real-world performance, you'd be hard pressed to find an app that maxes out CPU and GPU at the same time, and I don't foresee running anything that uses 38 cores of GPU at full load constantly. So far, nothing I've done in real world usage comes close to draining the battery while it's plugged into the QGeeM dock. All in all, I'm extremely pleased. If I have further insights about power usage, or if anything else changes, I'll update this review. As it stands in real world usage, it's a clear 5 star product!

Does not work as advertised out of the box.
By Joel on Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2023
I will update this review if things change. I received this unit this morning, and despite advertising dual displays, the included cables and hardware will not cause either of my thunderbolt computers to recognize the second monitor. For a little background, I am using this on two different computers: 1) A desktop using a ThunderboltEx 4 2) A laptop using a built in thunderbolt 3 port When I initially unboxed it and plugged in all the cables to computer #1, literally nothing seemed to work. After digging around, I found the display drivers download page for this product, downloaded those and one of the monitors came to life. So if you get this product and you're having a lot of issues, make sure you try to download those drivers. After I got it working, the included usb-c to display port adapter was not recognized by either #1 or #2 as a device when plugged into any of the thunderbolt ports on the device (I tried them all). However, the displayport cable works just fine when directly plugged into computer #1. I also tried plugging the adapter directly into both computers, which did not work either. Fortunately, I did not realize it came with a converter and had already ordered one from Amazon, a usb-c to hdmi adapter. When I plugged this in, the computers recognized that a device had been plugged in, but no video was coming through. I thought perhaps I needed to reboot it all, so I did - suddenly the video switched monitors. The adapter monitor shows video, the but the hdmi plugged directly into the unit does not. So, it seems that whatever is recognized first gets the video, and the unit just can't transmit dual monitors as advertised. Note I've verified this on two computers. To double check everything, I used my own TB4 cable running from the unit to the computers. As near as I can tell, this device just simply does not work as advertised. Perhaps that's why it was almost 50% off, you get 50% of the advertised monitors. Additionally: - The usb devices will randomly stop working correctly - The ethernet port seems non-operational - My usb hub that I plugged into this isn't even recognized Again, I'd like to just emphasize, I've tried this with two computers and with both the included cables and my own. Overall, I guess I got what I paid for, a cheap product that promised the same functionality as things double its price and failed. I will continue trying to troubleshoot this and work on it, but, it's looking an awful lot like this is going to be an amazon return at this point.
