Mama, I'm goin fast!
By tigersmoonva on Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2025
Outstanding unit. Picks up speed traps miles away accurately and provides ample time to react accordingly. Directional arrows are a nice touch, so you know which direction trouble is located in. Can be overly sensitive in dense urban areas, but has a GPS mute feature which allows you to mark and silence alerts in specific places. Pricey, but a solid investment if you like to drive fast. A must have accessory for any sports car.

Great radar detector that COSTS WAY TOO MUCH!
By Barbarus on Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2025
Wow, I'm really impressed with this unit! The only reason it's getting three starts instead of five is because it is several years old tech being sold for startlingly high price tag - $700 will buy laptops these days, Uniden! OTOH, this R8 is replacing my "2008 Escort Solo S2 Passport" unit that saved me a gazillion dollars over the years. I liked that well enough, but this R8 is miles better - the customizability allowed me (with the help of Radar Vortex) to set it up nicely for the tech in use by most of my local LEO agencies (I only live a few miles from Radar Vortex's editor), so the signal:noise ratio on this unit is much improved over my previous unit and with the addition of a bespoke mirror tap wiring harness for my Ford Mach-e, the hard-wired install was simple and the result was elegant. The display customizations for this unit allows it to blend in nicely with my vehicle's cockpit, and the only way I could be any happier with the result is they had CHARGED ME SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS LESS FOR THIS PRODUCT! :-)

Almost TOO good!

I recently upgraded from the R7 to the R8 (gave the R7 to my daughter, it's still an AMAZING detector). If anything, the R8 is almost TOO good! All the features I loved from the R7 are still here, or are improved. The auto mute memory for K band is a MUST have feature if you don't want your detector driving you CRAZY. And the signal arrows are also extremely useful for figuring out where cops tend to hide and run radar. So why TOO good? Well the R8 has even better range than the already incredible R7, so I get Ka band hits sometimes from 1-3 MILES away! I am still learning to trust the signal strength meter, because getting a Ka band hit, slowing down, and then reaching the source MINUTES later is impressive, but also means I slowed down WAY earlier than I had to! This detector is a BEAST!
Great Detector - RTAC app connectivity is sporadic

Purchased this unit after seeing VortexRadar's in depth review and detailed product comparison. The detector itself works very well. It's loud enough to hear over the radio with the whistle sound plus the customization options are great. My only issue is with the RTAC app. When it's connected it works great. You can change about 95% of the settings on the detector via Bluetooth. This was much better than having to navigate through all the menus on the detector itself. The trouble is getting it connected to the app. Once you add it to your Bluetooth device list you would think that it would connect quickly once you launch the app but it is sporadic at best. So I love the detector but Uniden needs to fix the RTAC app connectivity issue.
Just buy this one!

I don’t even have words for this thing. Best money spent in a long time. Picks up cops from miles away. Even if they’re not using always on radar and laser, you’ll get a bleep. Incredibly accurate and tunable. It was picking up my own cars radar/lidar but you can adjust the sensitivity of each signal. WAY better than my valentine and whatever I have in my wife’s car. I even picked up a case for on my bike. By far the best radar detector I’ve ever owned or used.
This is a radar detector, not a police detector.

Two things to remember: not all police units run radar, and this isn't your dad's radar detector. Many detectors today do require some level of configuration, and knowing what is used in your state helps greatly. Vortex Radar has an awesome guide on how to set up your detector. As for the Uniden R8, this is by far the best detector I've owned yet. The long-range detection isn't exaggerated; it really does pick up radar from far away, and it's fast too. Except to get false alerts every now and then. I don't care what kind of radar detector you have; there will always be false alerts. Lucky, the Uniden does cut back on many of them.

This review is for the UNIDEN R8 radar laser detector. I have only had it for a few days. I read reviews on it falling off the windshiled. Mine came with 2 mounts. One of the mounts does look flimsy. It looks like my expensive unit will fall off if i use it. It did come with another mount that looks like I would have trouble removing it. I highly doubt this mount will fall off. It has a button so it can clip on and off the mount with ease. I'll problaby buy another of those mounts for my other car. So I used it to go to work. This thing was going off the whole entire time. Some people say you can tweak it. I will look into that later. For now I never read the instructions I just threw it on the wind shield. On day 3 the device memorized the false alarms. It still lets you know there is a frequency being detected but it grayes it out and no sound. So I was cruising to work the thing was quiet. All of a sudden it goes off I slow down. Im mad there is nothing. I want to return it. Then all of a sudden I see a hidden P car trying to catch speeders. On that road the fine is 350. I would have gotten caught for sure. So I already see it as 350 off. Like I said I never read the manual it was plug and play. It learned what was fake and it alerted me to what was real. Another feature I like is it tells you where the radar is. It was beeping showing ahead I never saw anything I just wanted to return it. Then it said it was on my left side. I looked and OMG on my left side behinid the barrels was an SUV just waiting to catch me. I also like that it shows your speed in digital format. My car has a needle speedometer. I dont look at that anymore. I just look at the R8. Its right on and accurate. This thing is pricey. In its defence I just took it out of the box and plugged it in. Like things should be. So yes i'm willing to pay a premium for something that simply works out of the box. Reviews did say that the LCD screen dies out so I bought the insurance just in case. In comes with a thin sleeve to protect it as well as a sturdy case. For now its 5 stars. I bought a unit before from another brand that required conection to my phone access to my contacts and gps and the whole nine yards. My car looked like a cockpit of an F16 i could not see anything out of the windshield. Im not sure if this thing has an app. I dont want an app and you do not need one. Plug and play its that simple. Just be warned the thing is a cry baby for the first few days as it learns what is real and what isnt.
Great Radar Detector

I absolutely LOVE the Uniden R8. It has great long range detection, and has alerted me of radar about a mile away. It is easy to set up, and easy to program, especially with the R/Tech app once you connect it via Bluetooth with your phone. You can also program it with your computer via the app from Uniden's website, as well as save settings and upload them to the unit if you changed them and want to reset from a previous configuration. I downloaded settings from Vortex Radar to program mine, then tweaked them to fit my needs. They have a complete review of several radar detectors, and was the reason I went with the R8 based on their tests. You can change colors of the alert arrows, signal bar, display. I like the red, but unfortunately can't see it very well in sunlight, so I had to go with white for easiest visibility when the sun is hitting the display from behind my vehicle. You can also select different tones for each type of threat (X, K, Ka, laser, RLC, etc) so you can keep your eyes on the road. The R8 also shows multiple threats at the same time, not just one, so you can decide if the threat is credible or some other signal. The auto mute and Quiet Ride is nice too, no sitting stationary and listening to loud beeps when you're not moving or driving very fast. It does detect crash avoidance systems from other vehicles, but those can be blocked out using the programmable mute feature. So like other detectors, it does give false warnings, but you can tell it to ignore those signals. Now the bad parts, and the reason I only gave it 4☆: When connecting to the computer, it took several tries to get it to connect. The display does NOT light up, and I had to reinstall the computer app to get it to connect both times I programmed it, I thought it was broken. The alert arrows aren't 100% accurate. Driving by radar speed signs showed threat ahead, and continued to do so after I passed it, even when the signal was bouncing off the vehicles behind me. It didn't switch to showing the threat coming from behind. The display occasionally seems to have a mind of its own. This morning it began cycling through Bright, Dim, Dimmer, Dark, Auto, and Off repeatedly. I unplugged it and plugged it back in only for it to continue doing it. After doing this several times, the display was off. Holding the mute button down on the plug or detector changes the display setting, so I did that and left it on bright. The power cord is in a closed console, so the mute button wasn't being touched. I think it has something to do with the Auto sensor. Regardless, it's the best radar detector I've owned, easy to use, intuitive, and can be tweaked to your area or liking. It does take a little effort on your part if you choose to set it up to get the most out of it, or you could plug it in and go.
First and last radar detector i’ll buy

Easy to use and have had it for a few years. It does get false alerts from cars and automatic door openers. These alerts are easily identified by the low strength that the detector picks up, most stationary or repeatable false alerts filter themselves out with the auto mute function via GPS. Display quality has been great for me, no dead pixels or anything to complain about. The mounts it comes with are good and haven’t had any issues with the detector falling or fitting where i want to put it. It does well with things like instant on and speed cameras. Based on the strength of the radar detect i can usually tell if they are using instant on, on vehicles that are in front of me but i cant see them yet. The GPS speed is accurate as well. it may be a little slow when accelerating but is consistent at steady speeds. This works well for me as some of my vehicles aren’t very accurate with the speedometer. On longer trips, running this along with wazes and you’ll be golden.
It's A Uniden!

What can I say? It's a Uniden. When it comes to radar detectors, Uniden is one of the best if not the best names in the industry. It's a little larger than my previous model and it also falses a bit more around certain vehicles with LIDAR or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems but it's detection range is far far superior and yes I mean far far superior. There are also highway apps for your phone that you can connect it with. This allows for easier programming of your detector as well as provides even more detailed information as you travel. I realize many may not use this feature, but I actually have my Radar Detector set to tell me to slow down. LOL. I am very pleased with this purchase.
