Read the specs before you buy and save yourself a lot of trouble!

I was able to install this bell easily in less than an hour. Integrated easily and perfectly with Apple HomeKit, and monitors activity outside the door. But before you order it, be aware that in the instructions, Belkin specs a doorbell transformer with 16 volts and 30VA. If you're replacing an old fashioned doorbell, some use 5 volt transformers and the ones that use 16 volt transformers are usually only 10VA. This is the reason for all the complaints about drop-outs. I purchased a direct replacement on Amazon for $14, and it works flawlessly with the doorbell. Your transformer is almost always attached to a junction box in your basement, and you can determine its specs by looking up its part #. A voltmeter can come in handy. It installs with two power and one ground to the 110V house power, and two terminals that attach to the wires coming in from the old doorbell. Nothing to it. The mounting for the bell couldn't be easier. The mount for the transformer is equally simple: unscrew the old transformer from the junction box, and screw the new one in.

A Complete Disaster!

I have used plenty of smart home products, and I usually have a decent experience, but the Wemo Smart Doorbell is hands down one of the worst products I’ve ever dealt with. This thing is a trainwreck from start to finish, and if you’re considering buying it, do yourself a favor and run the other way. Power Kit Nightmare: It Just Doesn’t Work One of the biggest selling points of this doorbell is that it’s supposed to work with your existing chime via a “power kit.” In reality, the power kit is a complete failure. No matter what you do—whether you follow the instructions to the letter, hire an electrician, or sacrifice a goat under a full moon—it simply will not work properly. The chime either doesn’t ring at all, or it makes a faint buzzing noise like it’s dying a slow and painful death. Sometimes, the doorbell completely cuts power to the chime, leaving you with a doorbell that doesn’t actually notify you when someone is at the door. That defeats the entire purpose of a wired doorbell. Unreliable Performance Even if you somehow get past the power kit catastrophe, the doorbell itself is one of the least reliable smart home devices I’ve ever used. The motion detection is wildly inconsistent, sometimes missing people entirely while sending alerts for cars driving down the street. The video feed frequently cuts out, and on multiple occasions, the doorbell just went completely offline for no reason—requiring a full reset to even get it working again. Apple HomeKit Integration? Barely Functional Wemo loves to market this as a premium Apple HomeKit doorbell. In reality, the HomeKit integration is as unstable as the rest of the device. The camera randomly stops responding in the Home app, the chime issues persist, and there are long delays when trying to view the live feed. If you’re an Apple user hoping for a seamless smart home experience, this doorbell will make you regret your decision immediately. Terrible Customer Support You might think, “Well, maybe I can just contact support and get this fixed.” Wrong! Wemo’s support is practically nonexistent. If you somehow get a response, they’ll just tell you to reset the device, check your wiring, or reinstall the app—all things you’ve already done ten times. They have no real solutions for the power kit issue because it’s clearly a fundamental design flaw, not a user error. Overpriced Garbage Considering how expensive this thing is, there is no excuse for it to be this bad. There are plenty of better, cheaper, and actually functional alternatives from brands that actually know how to make a smart doorbell. Wemo completely dropped the ball on this product—it’s unreliable, poorly designed, and an absolute nightmare to install and use. Final Verdict: Avoid at All Costs If you want a smart doorbell that actually works, this is NOT IT. Between the broken power kit, unreliable performance, and abysmal customer support, this product is an absolute waste of money. Do yourself a favor and get literally anything else.

It’s was fine, then less fine…then even less finer, but now fine again?

It’s been about a month and the Wemo is fine. Not great, not bad, just fine. I have a pair of HomePods nearby and it hardly ever loses connection. The talkback is very good and I love that it pops up on my Apple TV’s. The face recognition is fine, not great. It does an okay job at recognizing animals, packages, and people. The notifications are pretty good. It does take about 10 seconds to start recording after it detects motion. Sometimes it tells me it detected motion and I see that a package has been delivered without video of it being dropped off. Delivery folks can be pretty quick, but it knows something happened and tells me fairly instantaneously. Video quality is fine and dynamic range is average. My porch lights are on all night, so I’m not sure about the night vision. I like that there’s no subscription fee and that it’s fairly secure and encrypted compared to other systems, that’s why I’ll settle for fine. It was fine enough for me to buy a second Wemo for another entrance. It’s expensive for only being fine, but it seems to be the best native HomeKit solution. I got it slightly discounted and would really have a hard time justifying the full retail price tag to some of the far superior competitors at lower prices. But apparently it’s encrypted unlike some of the others. UPDATE- Subtracting a star because after 3 months, it’s just “kinda fine” now. It’ll frequently miss packages, people, and vehicles- and I have 2 cameras in the same area and both will miss everything. Biggest issue, these cameras need to be reset at least once every 2 weeks. Resetting them means getting out the special mini green torx screwdriver and physically taking the doorbell off and pressing the button on the back and then screwing it back on. I’m kinda over it. The perfect solution would be the ability to reset remotely through the app, but I guess once it loses connection there’s no way to talk to it. I don’t seem to have these issues with my other HomeKit cams, a Logitech and an Eve. Neither has needed a reset yet since installing them on the same network. If I were you I’d probably try something else, but unfortunately this may be the best HomeKit solution available. Update #2 September It won’t ring on my HomePods anymore. Tried restarting everything and re-adding the doorbells, but no ringing on any of my HomePods. Customer support says that they’ll get back to me. I’ll be holding my breath. I found out because my neighbor stopped by and rang the bell and thought we weren’t home. We were home, it’s just our doorbell doesn’t ring🤦🏻♂️ subtracting another star. At this point, I would not recommend. Update #3. Added a star. IOS 17 seems to have fixed the frequent disconnections and it now rings on all my HomePods. I don’t think I’ve had to reset it since the new update. Fingers crossed that it now works like it’s supposed to. I think I can recommend this doorbell cam again?

I have a smart home with more than 70 devices, and use only the WEMO light switches, and have had little trouble with any of them, for several years. I’ve owned the Wemo Smart Doorbell Camera for less than 2 years. Since I travel often, for work, I rely on my smart devices to show me what goes on around my home. This one device drops off my network multiple times per month. The only way to reset it, is to wait until I’m home unmount it, reset it, and hope that it connects the first time. I have tried multiple access points, and mesh devices, and even had an extender plugged in on the back side of the wall, where it was mounted. It still randomly drops off the network. A few months ago, on a windy day, I dropped the super-tiny set screw that holds the doorbell to the base. I called Wemo and they don’t sell the thing separately, and wouldn’t just send me one. The device is out of warranty, I get it, but the best they could do was suggest buying an M3x3 screw and that should work… that size screw is WAY too big. I had to buy the tiniest screw I could find, and drill and tap the base, so that I could re-mount the doorbell. Three days later, it drops off the network again, and we start the battle over again. For the price of this thing, it should, at least, be reliable. Prior to this device, I had an old RING peephole camera, in my other home, and though it wasn’t my favorite device, it was always reliable. Lastly, you cannot see or update this device from the WEMO app, it only shows up in the Apple HOME App, so diagnosing it, can be a pain. I would recommend almost ALL of the WEMO products, but not this one.

I will be returning this doorbell because it is flat out useless. I can't believe how incredibly unreliable this doorbell is, and even when it works it is barely better than doorbells that are a fraction of the price. When you open the Home app, the video preview is always blurry, and it has to be opened full size to view a clear video. According to Belkin this is intentional. The flat mount is aluminum and fairly sturdy, but the angle mount consists of attaching a piece of plastic to the aluminum base using the smallest screws invented by mankind. While neither could be considered theft-proof, the plastic bracket could yanked off the wall by by a five-year old. Should be much better considering the steep price. Motion detection is horrible. It will not detect anything unless it is within 1-2 feet of the camera. Anything further is invisible. My other HomeKit cameras detect people and vehicles that are hundreds of feet away. It overheats in direct sunlight, resulting in it going offline and randomly disconnecting. It's only March, so clearly this will not work at all during the summer. This is a dealbreaker even if it was perfect in every other way. I didn't research this when I bought it because I assumed that this type of product would be designed to work outdoors, but Belkin's specs state max temp of 45° C (113° F). While this seems adequate, exposure to direct sunlight will increase temperature by 20-30° beyond the ambient air temperature. It is also lower than the max temp for Ring and other cameras. Even when it is not overheated, it goes offline for no apparent reason, day or night. There is no way to easily "reboot" or reset it, but a day or two later it decides to start working on its own. There is no way to configure anything via a separate app or even in HomeKit. You cannot turn off night vision, for example (and no, this is not a HomeKit limitation). Extremely expensive. This is the most expensive video doorbell by a large margin, and you basically get nothing beyond what other video doorbells offer (aside from HomeKit integration). Other doorbells offer better video quality, configurable options, sturdier mounting, and better security. The warranty fiasco. Was three years when I bought it, but it turned out to be a "typo." In sum, this is a very poorly designed, unreliable, and extremely expensive video doorbell. Whoever greenlit this for release at Belkin should be ashamed of themselves.
Best HomeKit Doorbell

I’ve had 3 HomeKit doorbells and all of them have some compromises, software, function, or video quality issues - other reviews are rough on this one but after having the competition this one by far offers the best overall experience with HomeKit. My network is complicated and full of devices and I have zero connectivity issues but my network equipment is designed for a busy crowded network - If you already have a unreliable or poorly designed network you should expect poor performance from all of the HomeKit doorbells. This one is the best overall - make sure your environment is a quality one and this doorbell will not disappoint. The tiny mounting screw is tiny that could be better but the package does have a spare.
Nice feature set, but not a long term performer.

I don't remember how installation went, I guess it was uneventful. But a few months later, it quit working. It became apparent that I could not get it to reconnect to HomeKit. I had to do a factory reset. I wasted 2-3 hours on it, part of that was on hold for a long time trying to get tech support. With the help of tech support, guiding me through the magic sequence of factory reset and reconnecting in the specific time window, I finally got it working; ableit after multiple factory resets, and 'doorbell unable to connect' and 'doorbell already part of homekit' and ',are sure your phone is connected to wifi". It was then fine for a couple more months. Then it started all over again. This time, the hold time was too long for my tastes with tech support, so I gave up. I went on line and read what others had experienced. Similar to me. Same connections problems, same messages that make no sense. "Already added to home" when it wasn't. I have already wasted way too much time on this product. I think the reset button on the back is mashed in from being pressed so many times. I remember having a similar experience with a Wemo power outlet trying to get it working and the crap I had to go through getting the firmware updated. I will never buy another Wemo product again. Unfortunately the return window has passed and I don't have what it takes to stay on hold that long to talk with tech support. This thing is going in the trash.
After all I did to fix the camera in the review what helped was to open up the firewall ports.

Open up all the firewall ports in the router to allow inbound and outbound connections to this specific device only with a static ip address in the router. Most routers have some connections closed but this WEMO doorbell camera functions but not as responsive as without the firewall ports configured correctly .A more reliable firmware update is needed and over due by now since it is needed to be adjusted to be more sensitive to become more sensitive to motion.Might also be the isp is dropping the camera feed connection because of heavy network traffic. To get the best connection use the 1 channel of the 2.4 GHZ band and 20 MHZ width manually instead of auto scan band selection on the router because auto scan band selection will disconnect all devices. If your router supports IoT dedicated band turn this on and add the camera to HomeKit while your iPhone is connected to the IoT band. Make sure on your iPhone in the Wi-Fi settings you set auto-join Wi-Fi networks to off while you setup the camera to HomeKit if you’re setting up on the IoT band or else you’ll get an error The motion sensor on this camera only activates if it detects near by motion even though movement in the camera can be seen in the live stream. So it will not always actually film left to right or right to left movement unless the person is actually coming to the doorbell camera itself. The camera will always work if it likely knows the person is actually coming up to the camera. It’s a smart camera so even if you don’t trust it it will work as intended. Belkin says the camera has a hardware problem but I think a better firmware software update can fix it so I have a replacement and the second camera has the same issue. As long as the camera is always recording even an Apple homekit server side update in the Apple’s end can improve this cameras communication handshake issue. Some people also may have issues with the camera disconnecting after rebooting their router so don’t reboot your router so often. If you do reboot your router and the camera does not connect you may have to unscrew the camera and reset it with a pen for 1 to 2 seconds to connect it back to the Wi-Fi. If you still have problems with the camera disconnecting after sometime you may need to set the Wi-Fi channel manually in your router to a certain channel that’s not being used by your neighbors. Because when the Wi-Fi channels change because of overcrowding it will disconnect the camera and a reset with a pen on the camera for 1 to 2 seconds will need to be performed. You will need a good router with good coverage. If you have a Fios quantum gateway router those only do about 325 sq ft range so an upgraded router that has more coverage than that will be more reliable.
May need to upgrade door bell transformer for mechanical door chime

I ordered this video doorbell to replace an older Ring, since Ring is increasing their fees. I wanted something that integrated with HomeKit, and this fit the bill. Installation went OK. I do not like that the security screw is tiny and located on the bottom of the device. If you need to restart the WiFi or reset the device, you have to remove this screw, and there is a potential for losing it. I have an existing mechanical door chime, which requires a small supplied electronic device to be installed in the chime. After finishing the installation, the physical chime would not work. I was told by Wemo customer support that it requires a 24V transformer, even though the documentation states 16V-24V as a requirement. The reading on my 12-year-old transformer was 20V. I bought a new 24V transformer on Amazon and installed it. Initially, it didn't work, but a troubleshooting tip says the battery needs to replenish for at least half an hour. After waiting, it communicated with the mechanical chime. HomeKit integration is OK. I can see a live frozen camera shot on the Home screen of the Home app (it updates every 10 seconds or so). Clicking on it brings up full-screen live video. On my Mac, I always get a "No Response." I have to quit and restart the Home app to get the preview screen to appear. It works better on the iPhone and iPad Home app. This looks like an Apple problem. Reading another review, it looks like the Wemo firmware has not been updated in a number of years (1.0.16). The video feed is not much better than my old Ring doorbell. My doorbell is located in an enclosed entryway with a security door. The exposure of the camera is set to the light level of the entryway, so it washes out the view to the outside. I like the integration with the Home app and that I have iCloud+, so there is no cost to store streams. The price of the device on Amazon was $80 (the Wemo site lists it at $250). I'm OK with the device, not thrilled.

Despite the mixed reviews, I decided to try this out after Ring decided to stealthily increase my annual subscription 40% in 2024 at the same time as my doorbell decided to stop charging from house power. As I am already paying for AppleOne and already have Apple TV 4Ks, I decided to try out HomeKit for my video doorbell needs. The price was low enough, and the lack of an additional subscription needed make it a good value. The performance is roughly the same as the Ring doorbell it replaced (for the basic functionality I need at least). When someone rings the doorbell, it takes a couple seconds for the notification to show up on our devices, just like with Ring. The fish eye lens makes things look a bit odd, but it provides a full view of our porch, so an improvement over the previous doorbell we were using. I don't really have any big cons to report so far, but I am deducting a star for the lack of detail about how the device is operating. Compared to the Ring app, there just isn't as much information in the Apple Home screen to tell you what is going on. For example, wireless signal strength is an unknown. It should have pretty good signal strength at that location, but I have no way to confirm this. Overall, this is working well for me, and it didn't break the bank, so I am calling this a win. Fingers-crossed it will last a while.
