Do your research before buying truffle "flavored" products!!
By Nadia K on Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2020
This stuff is garbage. No real truffle flavor at all. It smells like gasoline and tastes like regular hot sauce with gasoline. If, like me, you opened the bottle and took a big whiff and immediately thought, "jeez...wtf is that awful stench?!" then let me tell you what it is! If you look at the ingredients list for this hot sauce, it says it contains "truffle essence" which is really just a way of saying that there are no real, natural truffles used. I did a quick bit of googling (unfortunately after I had already bought and opened this hot sauce) and turns out that most truffle oils and truffle flavored products are created synthetically using only one of the many aromatic compounds that is found naturally in truffles, called 2,4-dithiapentane. Real truffles do not hold their aroma for very long, a couple of days at most. This is why they're so coveted and it's why it's so difficult to get a good natural truffle flavor into anything. That said, in an attempt to really get that unique truffle aroma to stick around in their products and allow for a longer shelf life, companies synthetically derive this organic compound, out of a petroleum base. So, as a result, you might get a slight, very one-dimensional hint of what a truffle might smell/taste like (again, 2,4-dithiapentane is only one of the MANY naturally-occurring aromatic compounds found in truffles)...and then immediately afterwards, you're hit with a wave of gasoline. Suffice to say, this was an unfortunate waste of money. I would return it but I threw it all out as soon as I opened the bottle. Do your research before buying stuff like this, people. If it sounds too good to be true (hmmm, rare fungus coveted for its aroma and flavor, for some reason can all of a sudden be found in EVERYTHING??), it probably is.
