HD vs. 2K Arlo Cameras
By cra on Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2023
I own the Arlo Essential HD XL Camera (Generation 1) and the Arlo Essential 2K camera (Generation 2). The 2K camera is much smaller and lighter than the HD XL camera because it has fewer internal batteries. Truth be told, I see virtually no difference in video quality on my cell phone between the two cameras. Also, the larger, heavier HD XL camera included a swivel mount in the box. The smaller, lighter 2K camera came with a cheap fixed location mount that does not swivel. It's worthless if you want to adjust camera position. So I had to buy a swivel mount for the 2K camera. For my money, I prefer the less expensive, older Generation 1 HD XL cameras. It is more than adaquate for do it yourself home security systems. Update I eventually returned the Essential 2K (2nd Generation) camera. I had problems with the screen going pink and it eventually stopped responding to change requests in the Arlo phone app. I replaced it with a 2nd Generation Essential HD camera and had the similar problems. I think there are still some bugs to be worked out in the Essential 2nd generation cameras. But once these problems are resolved the Essential 2nd Generation cameras will be my go to. I have had ZERO problems with the older Gen1 Essential HD XL camera. By the way, I bought these Gen 1 Essential HD XL cameras refurbished from Amazom. Some reviewers claim their refurbished HD XL cameras batteries ran out of powere after a few weeks. My original HD XL has been running for a month and the battery is at 97%. My two week old HD XL is at 98%. Guess those guys forgot to charge their cameras. Again, I have had ZERO problems with my refurbished Generation 1 Essential HD XL cameras.
