Great laptop with a few major flaws
By danichon on Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2021
Positives: • Thermal design: Thermal dissipation is great since it is designed to handle at least an additional 30W rated 1650 Max-Q. The chassis is also used for heat dissipation so the keyboard can get mildly hot while on load (~50C at most) • Software: MSI Center Pro is amazing, I love their monitoring features (= Performance Monitor but better) and power related features. The F7 keyboard button which cycles between your saved power profiles is just brilliant! There's also a really cool feature which let you limit the charging max %, it works even when the laptop is shut down which is weirdly impressive. Negatives: • Speakers: They sound awful, similar to a cheap portable mini bluetooth speaker. What's worse is that they aren't even properly calibrated.. the left side is louder than the right side so I had to tune it down to 84% on Windows settings. For instance my good old budget Aspire 5 got way superior speakers, the bass sounds way better and they also get much louder. • Ports: Why the heck would you add another USB C port when 99% of the user base would make better use of an USB A port instead? I mean that's why USB C hubs with power passthrough exists right..? I'm literally forced to use a USB C hub each time I want to connect a USB flash drive since the only USB A that exists is 2.0.. which I conveniently use it for my wireless mouse dongle since they don't need higher bandwidth than 2.0! What a saving grace!! • "up to 12 hours battery life": Even with Super Battery activated; 20% brightness; no keyboard backlight; disabled mic/webcam, you won't get more than 8 hours of surfing the web (Chrome). This would be a great laptop if not for a few major flaws. Besides whats mentioned above, the build quality; keyboard; trackpad and screen are also great, just nothing exceptional. Also I would prefer the fingerprint reader to be baked into the power button, like on some XPS laptops.
