Better than Google Nest
By EFlowe on Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2022
UPDATED - I've worked in tech support for years. So I'm familiar with configuring WIFI routers. We had 2 Google WIFI nest systems and they were great. Really. No complaints. However a family member wanted nested WIFI and as family discussions go ours was offered up and we purchased a replacement. Remember I had 2 Google WIFI setups in 2 different locations and they worked great. I purchased the ORBI AX4200 Triband WIFI6 2pack (Refreshed) and honestly the only reason I did is I wanted to try the WIFI 6 and at the refreshed price I didn't have much to lose. I downloaded the app to my phone and followed the instructions and the 1st unit came online in a few minutes. I changed the SSID name and made a few personal selections for the network and ran my first speed test. BAM! Like that I had almost doubled my speed within my WIFI network. Again I have little to say bad about google nest wifi. But with this ORBI system (we have 800 mbs service) I jumped from at best 200mbs to over 400 mbs and sometimes close to 500 mbs WIFI signal. Now some of you reading the review might say "well that's not that impressive" but remember I went from 3 nested devices to (at this point only 1 device) and I had service on the 2nd floor, the 1st floor and even in the basement. To me that was impressive. So then I went and added the second device (remember I ordered the 2 pak) the device setup in a couple of minutes through the app and I put it on the same floor as the 1st one, I just put it at the back of the house and now we're getting reliable 400mb bandwidth by WIFI everywhere ... yes even in the basement and the house is a 100 year old house, no open concept design in this place. There are walls everywhere. Definitely improves the Zoom calls all day when working from home. Bottom line : Very impressive, Fast, easy to setup, worth the money, No dead spots anywhere. Now I want to justify to my wife putting this system in the 2nd location. It's that good. UPDATE: I have bought another 2 pack (refreshed) and put them in my second location. Both homes have 1000 mb service. The performance and reliability has been stellar no issues whatsoever. I will note for if you are considering this as a possibility for your home … please be aware that the guest network that you can configure along side your main network will not be as fast. We get 500 mb most all the time over Wi-Fi on our main network but the guest network will only be about 100mb. Which is fine for my friends who stop by and want to connect to Wi-Fi while visiting. But it is something worth mentioning. I am very satisfied with both my purchases and I am not some paid Amazon reviewer. (Unless you’re offering me a job) LOL ... UPDATE Again - I was incorrect that the guest network was limited to 100mb having switched network carriers the guest network now is over 400 mb. So please ignore my earlier comment. Still Loving our ORBI

Software Makes it Unusable
By Brad K. on Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2021
The hardware is fine, I suppose. The housing is surprisingly cheap feeling plastic, but the signal is strong and the router connects well to the satellite on a lower floor. That was the good news. The bad news is that the software and/or admin interface is buggy and - at least for my purposes - unusable. Problem one – a couple of important websites seem to be blocked. Not dangerous or "adult" websites. The most important is just a software vendor that I need to be able to reach. They're in Europe, if that matters. Not sure why it should. I can reach other European websites. The only clues I find about this is that it could be related to a double NAT situation, where the router and my internet gateway are both providing NAT and maybe causing a conflict of some kind for these couple particular websites. So I begin going through steps to fix the double NAT, changing some settings on both the T-Mobile internet gateway and the Orbi router. But I find that the settings I need are not available in the Orbi app. I need to use the web interface. Ok – reasonable I guess. The first time I try to use the web-based admin, I get stuck in a loop where it insists I change my password. Not once. Over and over again without ever getting into the admin. A continuous loop of entering the serial number, answering security questions, reseting the password, and then being forced to immediately do it all again. Did it at least a dozen times. Being careful. Different browsers. Clearly caches. Do some Google-ing and find others have had the problem. The only solution seems to be a hard reset. <sigh> OK. Finally, I submit to the reality that I'll have to set everything up again. Do the hard reset. After a couple scary moments, it actually does work. I am able to get into the web admin interface and change the recommended settings (putting it in access point mode rather than router mode). But then, after getting everything working again, I find I still can't get to the original blocked websites. I check and seem to still have a double NAT problem. So, I decide to go back to the web admin and see if I can find other settings that might help me. Guess what? Yes, only about an hour later, stuck in a "reset your password" loop again. It's got the latest firmware. I don't know what's going on. I guess I have to assume the reason this was "refurbished" is that someone before me also had trouble, and there is something just defective about this one. So, I guess, "eff me" for taking advantage of the offer to save a few bucks buying the "good as new" refurb.

This unit is well designed and works great. I bought the renewed version and going on 3 years of ownership. I get much better speeds than my previous dual-band routers. It's been very consistent as well, with not many disconnections. I have trouble connecting the satellite router on occasion. Overall very happy with my purchase
Setup was flawless and works great

I was somewhat hesitant about buying this wifi router given some of the comment here about bugging software. Also concerned with buying a renewed product. But I decided to give it a shot. I had absolutely no problem setting this up. Took me about 30 minutes to disconnect my existing wifi router, and get this one setup. I used the mobile app and it worked flawlessly. Not sure what folks are having issues with, but I simply walked through the configuration screens in the mobile app, and the wifi network came right up, I connected to it, ran a speed test, and was getting over 600Mbps, which is the service level I am paying for from my ISP. It wanted to install a software update before I could use it, and that went very smoothly, not one issue. I would highly recommend this router if the speeds and number of connections meet your requirements. I would ignore the comments about buggy software, since I found this to be totally untrue. I am a software developer, so I understand buggy software. :)
Working good so far.

Had a little hiccup during set up, did a factory reset and started from scratch and it worked fine. had another issue 2nd day of use but Netgear support was fantastic help on that end. it was a satellite connection issue. they have been working great in my home and have extended my range drastically. Will update this review in a few months after longer use.

Upgraded wifi signal in home

The installation was straight forward, also I like the fact Netgear gives you the ability to use an app or a web interface to configure the router and satellite. I replaced an older eero mesh wifi kit and this Orbi AX4200 has significantly increased the coverage and the wifi bandwidth in my home. Would highly recommend if you have not upgraded your home router or mesh wifi system in a while.

The setup touchy at first, but ran everything a second time and it worked fine. These fixed my random dropped internet problem!! Fixed my low speed to over 200mbps!! Love these wifi blasters! The signal strength showed zero droppage.. Impressive! And the extra ethernet Jack's are a big plus. Best wifi tool ever. Cost for renewed is a gift. They looks and function like brand new.

I am impressed with this router and how well it distributes the signal. I've only had one issues with the satellite and I think it's a problem with the driver on my work laptop. My laptop has no problem with the signal from the base, but for some reason it will not use the WI-FI from the satellite. The laptop is no more than 4 years old, but it's an odd problem. Also, I don't believe it has anything to do with the router or satellite. As far as design goes, it's kind of large. I found a 3d model to mount it on the wall that I printed and that makes it much better. I would highly recommend.
Decent mesh system, but still has a hard time pushing signal through a single wall...

I bought this to replace a 6-year-old netgear router (top of the line back then) that had been wavering and losing signal. I needed 2 things: first, a better signal further away from the main router as it has to be in a front bedroom across the entire house away from the kitchen/dining area where signal is weakest, and second, to have a satellite in another room to hook an older computer to via ethernet cable from the satellite to the computer. The second part works well, the physical connection gives that old computer access to the wifi. However, the signal is much weaker that I expected, and this is not a big house. It has thin walls, with little insulation, yet the system has a hard time getting the signal through the single wall that separates the main router from our Sony smart TV, so the signal gets broken up. So much so that I ended up routing ethernet cable through the wall to hard wire the TV and the Nintendo Switch OLED directly to the modem. I even added a third satellite, even though the house size doesn't really warrant it, to try to bolster the weaker than expected signal, and that only helped a little. Definitely not worth the money spent, I probably would have been better off with a strong gaming router at half the price for the size of the house (<1500 sq ft total). Don't get me wrong, it does have a stronger and more consistent signal than the router I was replacing, and it can carry more devices with less of a drop-off in signal strength than the old system thanks to the dedicated back-flow channel. But overall for the money and size of house, especially with an extra satellite, I expected a solid 8 or 9 out of 10 on signal strength and I get maybe a 7. Granted it isn't their most top of the line system, but you shouldn't have to spend a full grand just to get decent wifi. Save some money, try a cheaper alternative, or just get a strong gaming router for half the cost.
Buggy UI, unimpressed with features, and some random disconnects

I read a lot of reviews before buying this and finally decided that many of the negative reviews were probably from less-computer-savvy users. I am a software developer with some networking knowledge, so I figured I'd be able to troubleshoot any issues that came up. I'll start off by saying that at least at the moment I think mesh may be overkill for my environment, and I have not had any problems maintaining network connections with my old TP-Link AC1900 router, so I did not plug in the satellite figuring that without it my network should still work at least as good as it did previously on my network of 35 devices (saving the satellite for future expansion.) When I first connected this, security software on it (which I think is just a 2 or 3 day trial and if you want to keep it then you have to pay) started sending me tons of notifications about scanning each new device that connected. For the first few hours I had problems with devices losing their connections and restoring it a few minutes later. This seemed to calm down after a while and connections seemed pretty stable, so I figured maybe it was just due to the initial chaos taxing the processor. A week or so later though I did notice that my Harmony Smart Hub was offline for a few hours and I had to reboot it. Could be a coincidence, but it never lost its connection before. I also noticed a relay I have in my detached garage (maybe 30 feet from the router) was disconnected. I went outside by the garage and noticed the signal is a lot weaker than with my old router.. Also the UI of both the app and the web interface seem a bit glitchy. When I used the app on my phone it was usually to check which devices were connected to 5GHz, and it seemed that half the time that data was not available. Then to configure things like DHCP reservations and port forwarding I would log in to the web interface, but a few times I ran into an issue where the web interface was not showing any connected devices, plus it would often try to make me reset my PW when logging in (which I did once, to a 16 random character PW, and it would still keep asking me to reset it.) And lastly, when I first got this and was bombarded by notifications, I was glad to see that it did notify me when new devices connect to my network, but I guess that is a feature of the extra Armor protection and I'm not about to pay another $100/year just to know when new devices connect (I'm not interested in any of the other payed features.) And before I purchased, I did a quick search to see if I could use VLANs to segment my IoT devices. It looked like it did support VLANs, but come to find out it only supports them for IPTV - you need the Orbi PRO if you want to use multiple SSIDs and configurable VLANs.
