Quality, good value, MAKE sure you know what you're buying.
By Devin Royce on Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2020
So, I will not be using this product, and was instantly displeased upon removing the knife from it's package. However, that is entirely because I did not read any of the information about the knife before ordering it. I guess the Buy it Now button finally bit me. I don't think there is a rating category pertaining to how well a product fits an idea in my head before I clicked on something and clicked buy it now without reading a single word about what the product actually is, so I think the only reasonable thing to do is to rate the product based on what the product page says the product is, the price I paid for the product, and the product that showed up at my door. Also because of that, I probably shouldn't even mention the fact that the blade is on a spring that automatically retracts it, instead of latching in a useable position, which makes it almost completely unusable for the task I bought the knife for. Again, this is detailed quite clearly in multiple places, so well in fact that I'd even say the seller made an honest effort to really make sure the buyer would notice that piece of information above nearly any other piece of information, so I will not let that affect my review. With that cleared up, the knife feels sturdy and has an appropriate amount of gravity in it, and is about as ergonomic as this classic shape/form factor could permit. The rubber grip material is soft, yet firm enough that I don't fear it wearing prematurely. The jimping at the top of the handle is a little lackluster, but is preferable to overly aggressive jimping. Jimping on the bottom of the handle is considerably more pronounced, and still manages to be inoffensive. I find this balance quite reasonable, as the lower jimping is much more pertinent to safely using the knife than the top jimping is. Now that I'm done saying jimping, the sliding mechanism for the blade feels quite smooth, although sometimes the slider seems to be stuck or locked and it's difficult to extend the blade at the very beginning of it's movement. I haven't noticed anything suggesting that this is a design feature, so I'm going to say it's a quirk, but it might go away with use, and may even be limited to my unit. In terms of the automatic retention mechanism, which is basically just a light spring, I really can't fault it. For anything like cardboard or plastic, or basically anything you can cut through in a continuous motion without relying on the tip of the blade, it really performs flawlessly and the automatic blade retraction is of no inconvenience. Of course, if you need to perform a puncturing type of operation with the blade, then the only forces acting on keeping the blade extended are your thumb, while the spring, and any puncturing force, are acting to retract the blade. For light puncturing, this won't be an issue, but for tasks that you probably should go get a different tool to do anyway, like puncturing drywall, the lack of a locking mechanism will be most challenging to the user's thumb-tip. It comes with some extra blades in the handle, which is nice, but they are loose in the handle rather than affixed by any means, so they jingle jangle around in there, which I find annoying. If I had any plans of actually using this knife, which perhaps someday I will do, I would, or then will, immediately remove the spare blades, but that's only my personal prioritization of non-janglies vs keeping replacement blades in very close proximity to the knife, especially considering that replacing the blade still requires a tool, at least in the word's most basic sense, to remove the screw holding the two handle halves together. Others may prioritize their life values differently, and with this I have no qualms. Overall, I need something else for puncturing drywall, but I think this is a pretty good knife, and certainly a good value compared to other knives on Amazon. Honestly, I think it could be a little less expensive, and if bought from a store in-person, I would greatly de-rate its value proposition, but I also am okay with paying a little more to have someone bring it to my front door the day after I order it so I don't have to go out into the coronavirus apocalypse, so the $2ish markup over a reasonable value that I just made up in my head is not insulting to me.

Loose blades a safety issue
By Kat Leipert on Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2023
I needed box cutters with an auto-retractable blade per safety standards where I work. I bought 10 of these for my team. 3 of the knives had issues with the extra blades slipping out of the back end of knife. The extra blades are loose in the handle (no way to secure them) and even with the screw tightened completely the loose blade slips through the slot between the 2 sides of the knife. We have to pick up the loose blades off the floor which is a safety issue for me.
