If your company treats you like a child, this thing is for you
By Boiler80 on Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2022
I work remotely 50% of the time. For my job, I already have to log everything I do into a time sheet each week, accounting for each 15 minute increment by project I am working on. In addition, my bosses hate that I work remotely even a little bit. They are older white guys who do not understand the benefits working at home can provide. They expect that I work consistently every day from 8 to 5. Despite the fact that I get great performance reviews, have grown my portion of the business substantially, and have great client satisfaction scores, when I am home it is like I am being monitored constantly. When I’m at home, I don’t necessarily want to work 8 to 5. Some days I’d like to start earlier, some days, maybe I’d like a break midday and come back to work later in the evening. But the way the company handles remote work makes this impossible. They have set Teams up so it sets your status to “Away” after 5 minutes of inactivity. My PC will lock if there is 15 minutes of inactivity. If I am “Away” for what is deemed too long (with of course no consistent duration) I will get an IM or phone call from my boss checking in on me. I am expected to either answer or respond immediately. I believe that I have the right to walk away from my desk for a bit, maybe to take a walk on a nice day or something similar, if I am doing everything that needs to be done and my performance is meeting or exceeding expectations. It used to be I could put a meeting on my calendar so my Teams status showed as “Busy” during which I would not be bothered as they would assume I’m in a meeting. But the latest change to Teams changes status to “Away” after 5 minutes even if you have something on your calendar. So I got this mouse jiggler. I now have developed the perfect procedure to be able to take a reasonable break every now and then. Step 1 – Download the Teams app to your phone so that you get all IMs and phone calls even if away from your PC. This will help in the event of an emergency that requires your immediate attentions. Step 2 – put a meeting on your calendar for the duration you will be away. This will change your status to “Busy,” and allows you to say you were in a meeting if contacted. Step 3 – minimize the Teams window. This is because if you have a chat window open and someone IMs you, it would show as “Read”. And if you read an IM but don’t respond, that potentially raises a flag. Step 4 – With this jiggler plugged into the wall, so they can’t detect it, turn it on and place your mouse on it. Step 5 – enjoy a nice break with no stress.I initially thought this thing was a little expensive for what it does, but it is absolutely silent, plugs into your outlet with no need for pc connection (and has a decent cord length unlike some other reviewed items) and works pretty flawlessly. But the freedom it has given me from being micromanaged while at home is priceless. I can honestly say this may be the best $30 I have ever spent. Does it seem stupid and immature to own this thing? Yes. But it also seems stupid and immature to treat a responsible and hard-working employee like a child, so it sort of is what it is. I would highly recommend this device to anyone who works remotely and has to deal with extreme micromanagement.

Annoying ticking noise

It makes a very annoying ticking noise when running enough that I had to return it...otherwise it worked as described.
