Updated 3/7/205 - S4Max still vacuuming along after 3-1/2 years!
By Fraser Mendel on Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024
UPDATE: 3/7/2025 3-1/2 years after buying the S4 Max it is still running. I was expecting it to die so bought a replacement in December - but the S4 Max keeps plugging along. Its cleaning power, convenience and longevity have exceeded all expectations! I bought the Roborock S4 Max in August 2021. It was something of a splurge purchase - we didn't need it, theoretically it sounded nice, but I had my doubts about it. Wow. In the first month, it so exceeded my expectations that I was dumbfounded. But, I had worries about how long it would last. So, now, 30 months later, I'm writing a review. It's a well made unit. We have a 2-story house, mixed hardwood, tile and carpeting. It does a fantastic job on the hardwood and tile and a good job on the carpets in the bedrooms. For the first 2 years I carried downstairs once a week to vacuum downstairs, but then made the decision to get a second unit for the downstairs. Currently this upstairs unit runs 4-6 times per week. I clean the filter every other week. At this point, I've replaced that filter 4 times. I've replaced the rubber side spinner brush 4 times, and the main roller once. Having it run on a regular basis makes a noticeable difference in the dust in the air. It also cleans under furniture - beds, cabinets, dressers - that would never get cleaned so regularly. Pros: Great mapping, easy to use, sturdy, big reduction in dust, cleans under furniture, and enormous time savings. Cons: None. I've liked it so much in August 2023, after 2 years of using the Roborock S4 Max, I bought a Q5+ with self emptying dock for our downstairs so I wouldn't have to carry the S4 up and down stairs. The Q5+ seems to be a tiny bit faster, with a bit better suction, but essentially is equally great. The self emptying dock is extremely convenient (though with the tiny downside of not seeing if you've vacuumed up any small important objects).

4 months old and will no longer charge (updated 04/27/21)
By PMR on Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2021
**04/27/21 update: Roborock's tech support has been top notch and I was about to have the Robot serviced by them when we discovered a way to get the device to charge. We had to dock the robot THEN unplug and plug in the charging station. We'll see how it goes. If it returns to the base and charges later today we're one step closer to resolution - though still concerned about why this started happening in the first place and whether or not it will be a problem down the road. More later... The S4 Max is a great vacuum - far superior to our older iRobot and our older Neato - when it works, that is. you see...this is one of those disgruntled reviews written out of frustration with a product I love that has suddenly failed me. I fully intend to update this review to 5 stars should Roborock tech support reply to my inquiry with a satisfactory solution. Until then...here's what you need to know about my experience with the device. PROS 1) It does a great job vacuuming - both on hardwood floors, tile, and carpets of all kinds. 2) It easy to configure, map your house, and control via the mobile app 3) When it charges, the battery lasts a pretty long time and if it doesn't finish the job it returns to base and re-charges and finishes vacuuming in a timely manner. 4) The ability to set no-go zones via the app works very well. In our house, we have the unit vacuum the kitchen and dining area on a daily basis and the ret of the house on weekend - with the exception of my son's room, which it bypasses because we drew a barrier line in front of his door in the app. 5) The vacuum doesn't get stuck under furniture like our old robot vacs did because it won't go in to tight spaces. It simply uses it's lasers to determine if it's going to get stuck and it stays away. CONS 1) While it will work with Alexa, the setup is difficult, to say the least, and you can't name the unit (you must call it "Roborock"), and you cannot tell the unit to vacuum a particular room as you can via the app. The only commands are "start" and "stop", basically. 2) As far as we can tell, you can only install the app on one mobile device - so I can configure and control the unit but my wife cannot. Which means, she has to continually ask me to tell the vacuum to do it's thing or, in most instances, stop vacuuming. This is a big pain. 3) Finally, as my rating suggests...it might just quit on you for no apparent reason. Our unit is 4 months old and will not even attempt to charge the battery. Could it be a bad battery? Maybe, but I hope not after only 4 months vacuuming so little. Also, if it were a dead battery I think the charging station would at least TRY to charge the unit - but it does nothing. So there you have it. A great vacuum that will last you 4 months. Hopefully I just got a bad unit, bad charging station, or bad battery...and hopefully Roborock will replace the faulty hardware so I can update this review to 5 stars and songs of praise all around!
