64 MP, 4500mAH battery, and sub $400 price tag
By Kyle_M on Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2020
5/11/2020 A little backstory: I've been a more frugal phone user for the past 10 years. I often found phones second-hand on craigslist, ebay, or letgo. I used to go after last year's model and try to stick around $2-300 range, and lately that's meant going after 2-year-old models. Since the vast majority of phones have gone to not easily replaceable batteries requiring the entire phone to be disassembled and risk breaking the tiny boards or connections, I had to look for something new since batteries on a 2 year old phone are pretty much shot. I've had my eye on the Samsung A-line of phones and ended up with this one. I started looking at the A11 and upsold myself all the way to the A71. Since I wasn't able to handle any of the phones in person, I can only assume that I got caught up in the specifications and I could have been perfectly satisfied with any of the other ones I was looking at (A11, A21[not released yet], and A51). But, boy am I glad I upsold myself, I missed Samsung and their AMOLED screens. I originally planned on using this device on Verizon, as it states in another review that it does work with Verizon. There are a couple of caveats to that: You must have a pre-activated SIM card from them either from a BYOD prepaid, or buy a cheap phone on their pre- or post-paid plans and swap it into the phone. However, since the IMEI doesn't match their records, wifi-calling and texting to not work because they cannot verify the device. Trying to register a SIM with them on their BYOD will not work as of 5/2/2020, but that may change because Verizon is going CDMA-less. This phone also lacks 2G/3G service bands for Verizon so it's 4G or bust. That may work depending on where you use your phone the most, but for me it was better to transition to T-Mobile. On T-Mobile, this device works as it should and it does shine. I'm a new customer to them so I didn't know what to expect, but for $25/mo for 5GB on their prepaid plan, I'd be silly not to try it. Tethering, wifi calling and texting, and the hotspot all work. Battery life so far is 3.5 days, but that's with little use as it's my second test line as of right now. I do fully expect to get 1.5 days of normal use between charges. (Also please note I checked the IMEI with T-Mobile and they told me this phone isn't 100% compatible with their network too, but I didn't run into any issues during normal use like I did with Verizon. Also this is technically a "South American market" phone, so it's doubtful that any US carrier would certify it as 100% compatible) The phone itself was a little too slippery for me, as most of them are. I usually get cases for my phones and I did for this one too (see below). It's pretty light considering the plastic back and frame, also the 4500mAH capacity battery. Charging is nice and fast, it took about 1.5 hours to go from 8% to full charging it today with the supplied charger. USB-C is the norm these days for android, so it was nice to see that included. I haven't tried the FM radio, but the wireless range seems to be nice. Using Wifiman, an app from Ubiquiti I use during wireless troubleshooting and some basic wifi surveying, it reports a higher dBm than my previous LG V30, so the antenna design must be better in some respects. The stock camera app is nice, it lacks some of the frilly AR filters and silly doodads you see in the phone stores when they're set to that demo mode or whatever. There is a gcam mod for this, just google it, that really brings the low-light pictures to life. I guess I'm addicted to NovaLauncher so I don't really have anything to say about the stock UI experience, except the settings page is nicely re-worked and I like the layout. I missed the notification LED of the old Notes I used to have so I got aodNotify to serve as a replacement, I get a lot of use out of that. It doesn't look like there is a whole lot of development going on with the A71 on XDA, however there is a root method already if you're into that type of thing. It looks pretty straightforward but I did not try it myself. I don't really know what you'd do with that beyond the normal apps that require root, as there doesn't seem to be any other ROMs being actively developed for this phone. I paired this with some screen protectors (copy & paste ASIN to see on amazon) B082TY2VMN and B07Z8LXW6Y however I wouldn't recommend the screen protectors for the screen because they are very very thick and impede the use of the in-screen fingerprint reader. I also picked up this case B07ZG3MZ6Y which seems to do the job well. I might spring for a traditional Commuter Otterbox if they make something other than the goofy one they have now. I never liked the thinner versions of their 2-piece designs, the rubber part always stretches out and distorts. Anyway, for this being the first actual new phone I've owned, I'm really happy with it. If you're used to new phones it probably won't dazzle you like it did me. But, I think it's hard to come close on the actual value you get with this phone vs the flagships and their bloated prices. I briefly looked into the iPhone SE 2 or whatever, and to it's credit it has a lot of power, but I'm not that into Apple and the battery life is abysmal. I read a bunch of articles trying to crown the A21 or A51 as the budget king, and I guess it is a matter of pricepoint, but this is like an S20 with a plastic body and an instant $500 rebate. BEWARE: I have come across some threads about this phone having some issues with the screen and low backlight settings on a gray background. I've also read a few threads about those problems being fixed. I DID NOT have any of those issues with my particular phone. I may be lucky, or I may have gotten a newer revision that fixed this issue. I wouldn't feel right about writing this review without mentioning that, but given Amazon's return policy I still purchased this with confidence that I could return it if it did come with a screen defect. Thanks for reading my long reflection on this phone.

Not compatible with Verizon and drops calls on AT&T occasionally
By Pete on Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2020
1. It does not work with Verizon. 2. They do not want to give you a refund. I was subjected to an AtoZ claim for over 2 months. 3. Buy a CDMA compatible phone instead. I ordered this product assuming that it would work with Verizon. It works long enough for you to sync your contacts. This is the most annoying part. Because, after you sync your contacts you want to keep the phone due to security issues with returning it. I would not recommend buying this phone if you have Verizon. Update: I switched to AT&T and have been having lots of issues with calls being dropped on a regular basis. It is September and I am finally getting in touch with the seller who is refusing to issue a full refund. They were offering a partial refund of $77, which is absurd considering the phone cost $365. They even retracted that offer and were telling me to either return it, at cost, or keep it with no refund. I had to pull up the e-mail they sent offering the $77 and now they only want to give me a $60 refund. This process was a complete nightmare and should be avoided at all costs.

Absolutely love this phone!

I've had this phone for about 4 weeks now. I buy a new phone about every year because I love new technology. But I think it's ridiculous to spend $700 or more for a phone. So I try to find the best phone I can get for around $500 or less. Last year I bought the Pixel 3a. Truly the best camera on a phone for less than $500 and sometimes better than most flagships. But the Pixel 4a is too small and OnePlus has shunned their budget customers. So I had to search elsewhere. I came across the Galaxy A71 and was amazed at what you get for the money. Sad that Samsung chooses not to sell their best budget phones in the US. Thank goodness Amazon brings the best options from around the world to us! I must say that I am THOROUGHLY impressed with the A71! Excellent large screen and plenty of speed for everything that I do. I did a side by side comparison with the Pixel 3a camera and I must say that it often produces a better picture than the 3a! Better detail and better performance in harsh lighting situations. There are 2 areas where the Pixel 3a is better. 1) Since the 3a has OIS and the A71 does not, you have to hold the A71 much more steady than the 3a. And the 3a will produce a great picture almost every time while I sometimes have to take a second picture with the A71 in lower light. 2) The night mode is much better in the 3a. In low light the A71 night mode can sometimes produce a better picture. But in very low light the 3a wins hands down. The reason is that the 3a keeps the shutter open nearly 3-4 times longer in night mode than the A71. I know there are many reasons for this but the result is much better pictures for the 3a in very low light. But for 90% if the pictures I take, I can say that the A71 takes as good or better pictures than the 3a. - Overall I would highly recommend this phone! Just wish Samsung would sell it in the US instead of trying to get more money out of us for the A71 5G that we honestly don't need right now!

I've had my phone for about a month now and am quite happy with it. I purchased it from Mobiles International, LLC, and had a flawless experience. I would use them again. I received a sealed, new phone that was packaged well. My phone, surprisingly, came with a clear, plastic case to protect it a little. I used it until I purchased a wallet case that I prefer, that protects the front and back as well as having a magnetic clip. I also purchased a clear, glass screen protector, so I hope I can get a long life from my phone. It comes with a C cable and wall charger. I purchased some USB to C cables to use with my car chargers and others that I previously had. The charge is quite quick and lasts a day or two with moderate use, depending on my location. I don't normally watch movies or long videos. Pictures turn out clear and it's easy to choose selections, but I'm still learning. It's nice to have an expansion ability for a micro SD card to increase memory. I was unable to use my phone on Verizon/Total Wireless when I tried, but I didn't pursue it very hard. I signed up with ATT prepaid and it's working adequately, though I'm lacking a bit of coverage in rural areas. This isn't too surprising and my monthly charge is very reasonable, so far. I have been looking at upgrading my phone for a long time and feel that this is the best value for my needs and wants. I'm very happy, so far, and recommend this phone and the vendor without reservation. I will update if I have more to add as time passes. Love it!

Update 3 weeks later-LOVE LOVE LOVE this phone! I have had a chance to really play with it and use it and it really is a great phone, cannot tell I am using a mid range phone. My fave feature is the macro camera. The detail is amazing! I like the split screen feature as well that I can customize to look at two apps simultaneously. I haven't had any issues with my fingerprint scanner and the battery literally lasts forever (ok not forever but I'm on the phone up to 13 hrs per day without havingto charge it) This phone is awesome so far! Writing my review the first day I am unboxing the phone but it's great so far. The phone came VERY quickly so kudos to the seller for that (was supposed to be about 2 weeks and came in 4 days.) The outer box wasn't sealed however everything including the phone and accessories were sealed tightly so no points off for that. I have Cricket Wireless which switched over flawlessly. Samsung Smart Switch got me up and running in about an hr. I haven't played with all of the features yet but this phone is definitely an upgrade from my Galaxy S7. The only slight con I have experienced so far is I miss the space bar when typing probably because the keyboard sits differently on this phone than my previous one but it isn't major and I will get used to it. No more flagship phones for me, mid range are the way to go!

Upgraded from the S8+. The amoled screen on the S8 is slightly better than the A71. Aside from that everything else feels like an upgrade. Pros: Huge amoled screen Awesome battery I paid a little bit extra and went with the seller Woot which is a Amazon owned third party seller. The version I received works perfectly with T-mobile, Mint, and Metro Pcs. 4G LTE all day. The cameras are nice. I'm not a big selfie or picture taker but it's there and seems as good as my S8+. I do love the wide angle lense though. It's very stylish phone, can barely tell it is plastic since the color pops out. Who cares anyway? Your phone case is made of plastic probably. Phone is plenty fast as well. Comes with a free case and screen protector... How cool is that?! Nothing to really complain about... So good so far. It sucks the phone doesn't have any IP rating but my guess is they probably don't want to deal with any water damage warranty claims. Might get my mom one too.

WOW, I never thought I would write a 5-star review on a mobile phone, yet here I am. Why did I pick this one? First, price. The lowest in any of the premier mobile phone brands. Second, the 64 mp front facing camera. I am far from not disappointed, I'm enthusiastic! This phone has the best battery performance I have ever experienced, whether iPhones or Blackberrys. I can confidently and comfortably go 2 days without charging. OH! Then there's the charging. Very very quick to charge it to 100% I like the Samsung treatment to Android, not a ton of bloatware that I have had to endure when buying from a service provider. Nice themes, smooth sweet feel. Nice touch screen. Quick response to touch commands, whether taps, swipes or pinches. A silicone-type clear shell is included, which helps to keep it secure in my hand or pocket as well as protecting the paint job on the back. The best phone I have ever purchased, I think you will be pleased.
Camera likes to oversharpen, and Samsung needs to put it's software on a diet.

The whole reason I chose this phone was for the camera(s), but I also needed something under $500 bucks. I heard this phone's camera specs in particular was marketed toward the "tic toc crowd". I wish for tic toc to die death by 1000 cuts, but wanted the best camera I could find for a midrange, and took my chances with this. What I got was good quality pictures that look like they've been oversharpened every other shot. It's really such a shame. It's particularly noticeable when trying to photograph a detailed drawing (see the e-ink hand I drew which.. yeah, christ, muh rendering, totally wiped), or a face, even in the mirror. It takes fine details like that and focuses in too hard. I also notice it on animals, with how sharp the fur looks. I like to sin and use the Zoom Function even though on nearly all smartphones, using the camera zoom usually confirms your shot will be a potato. But this is a SHARPENED potato! Some days it doesn't bother me, other days it does. I'd say what this phone handles beautifully is inorganic subjects and landscapes. People and Pets, it's iffy. There are some things I like: Night mode is decent. Panorama is cool. Colors decent. But that sharpening really bothers me. Even shooting on manual, it doesn't go away. The most tedious thing is that small white outline i see around the sharpened areas depending on what it is. You do kinda adjust to it or learn to edit around it, but that really wasn't what I had in mind. Like I said, the most disappointing part is you can tell the photo was quality until whatever it is about this system makes all the images sharpened. If I figure out a fix I'll update my review. Other cons: >It's big. Slim, but big. Perhaps this is collaboration with the handbag industry to make women's pockets completely obsolete, but jeez. >The fingerprint system either kinds of blows or my fingerprints are constantly changing. >The bloat, dear god, THE BLOAT. I would've given this 3 stars at least if not for the bloat. But! You can plug it into your computer, run a debugger and kill most of it. Nice clean device. Then Samsung sends you an update and reinstalls most of it. Why. I don't need this crap. Now I don't want to update my phone. For this reason alone, this will be the last Samsung phone I ever buy. I'll ride out it's life as long as I can, and then gladly move back to Motorola, or even an iPhone at this stage.

EDIT- I ended up returning this due to it completely dying a couple nights ago while browsing social media. I tried for almost 2 days to get it to come back on and nothing worked. I'm so upset that I'm not only losing a great phone, but all my pictures that I stupidly didn't back up. T_T I can't imagine what happened, I've literally never dropped it, I've taken great care of it, and this was the first time it ever froze up. So sad :( I've had this phone for around 3 months and I would rate 5 stars, but it doesn't get good reception AT ALL. I'm not sure if it's just mine or what but it's pretty frustrating. I can put my SIM card in my fiance's phone and get service in places that this phone has none. It also randomly disconnects from the wifi every hour or so. Wifi calling also only works half the time, the other half it just says I'm not connected to wifi or I'm not registered on the network when both are clearly not true. I love everything else about this phone, but I really need reliable reception so I'm returning it as soon as I get something else. So disappointed, I spent months looking forward to getting this. Also want to add I've used this phone on Tracfone, AT&T, and T-Mobile and have had the same problem on all 3.
