My garage is now smart
By Tony on Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2020
All-in-all, this little device works well and consistently, giving me remote access to opening/closing my Genie garage door. I purchased this MSG100 just a bit over a week ago. I was initially surprised to find some pieces missing (little screws, adhesive pads, test wire), so I reached out to Meross to see if there was anything they could do. They were able to send me a new package, this one with the missing pieces. Now that I had everything, I was ready to set it up. It really wasn't that difficult. I was initially worried that I didn't know enough about garage doors to do this, but it really wasn't that difficult. I watched a YouTube video where someone mounted this that gave a good easy-to-understand visual. They give you a little piece of wire that you can use to connect between two contacts on your garage door in order to test if the device is compatible with your opener. In my case, the terminals I needed to test had a number 1 and 2 next to them (see attached picture). If you would like to test before you decide to order, you can just use your own wire, or take a pair of pliers and bridge the connection. If your garage door opens/closes when you touch it to both of the terminals, then the Meross device will work. Walking through the app will go over all of the directions. After testing, they recommend to go ahead and plug up the device to power inside your home to get it started with wifi setup. If you can plug it up in the garage, that will also let you test if your wifi will reach. Once I had the app setup, I moved on to installing it. I used the provided adhesive pads to stick the device on top of the opener itself, and just bundled the cables together so they're all up there (see photo). The power cable is a USB plug that connects to a regular power adapter, and there should be an outlet just above your garage door opener. The control cable has two leads that now need to connect to those same two terminals that were tested before. The final cable on the device has a red connector that attaches to the long cable included for the door sensor. This was probably to longest part since I had to run the cable across the rail to the door itself. There should already be some wire running across this rail to one of the control levers that stops the door when it's closed. I just followed that and put the new wire under the plastic clips holding the existing wire. In my case, I opted to attach the sensor using the included adhesive pads to the top of the plastic piece that slides along the underside of the rail (the emergency release lever part). This is what the guy did in the Youtube video. It was a shorter run and easier than attaching the sensor on the door, while also serving the same purpose. If you do the same, just keep in mind this plastic piece also hits the levers on the rail to stop it once it's closed, so just put it like in the picture attached so it doesn't conflict. Once all was done, I just opened the app and tapping the garage door icon was opening and closing my garage door! It initially was giving an error saying that the garage door failed to open or close, even though it opened/closed just fine. This is because of the "Opening time" setting that you will need to adjust. This setting tells the app to wait a longer/shorter time before checking to see if it completed successfully. Since my door takes a while to open, I had to change the 15sec default to 20 seconds. Now I don't get the message, and successfully get notifications when the door opens and closes. These notifications work even if you use your manual remote or button in your car to open, which is cool. And on top of that, it also integrates with Alexa. Just download the Meross Alexa Skill and link it, then you can open and close it with your voice. At the end of the day, it works quite will so far and I am very happy with it. I was apprehensive at first due to my lack of knowledge, but it really was pretty simple. And Meross came through and did the right thing to get me the missing parts so I didn't have to return it. Just give them some time to respond. Final note: If I did have one small gripe so far, it would be that once you have it integrated with Alexa, the Alexa app does not have an open/close button that you can tap. So if you do not want voice control, you can't use the Alexa app to control it, so you'll just have to use the Meross app. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the Alexa app or the Meross skill. The Alexa app does not treat the garage door opener like a smart plug with a simple on/off button. I can't dock them for that, but if Meross and/or Amazon are listening: you guys should get together and find a way to have a simple open/close button in the Alexa app just like you do in the Meross app. That way you can use the Alexa app as the hub even if you don't want to use voice.

I am torn on how to explain this so I will just lay it out. The device itself is great and works exactly as advertised - I can open and close the door from anywhere and it connects to Alexa (I did not opt for the AppleHome Kit version). It’s everything else that I was a little frustrated with. The install is easy - assuming you have some intuition. The reason I say that is the directions provided. I really really really really do not like when companies write directions using AI software and this feels like that. The directions are very simple and too simple simultaneously. I installed the device as instructed, but before I had attempted installation I also watched a few videos on YouTube, just to see if anyone else had issues that I could avoid. Because I use a cheap and simple garage door, connection was simple and at this point the directions were fairly simple - attach this to that, plug here and here, simple things. Then came time to set up the app. This is where I started to feel… cheap. The app is just like the directions, simple but also too simple. It is not very intuitive unless you have a variety of other “smart” products. I say that because it handles similarly to my other smart products that I use for my aquariums, but the app just feels very clunky. It’s a simple UI and display, but it’s not very user friendly and there were more than a few moments that it felt cumbersome. For example, how to connect the app and device to WiFi. As you follow the installation wizard, the wording just feels… cheap. Again, it feels like a cheap AI company that made a little Bluetooth receiver. That is because at its core, that is exactly what this is though. I’m mad at it, but it also doesn’t instill a lot of confidence either. Is the value for money there? Yes - I would buy one again and even recommend it to others. It works and solved my problem. But it’s everything else, you know what I mean? It’s not a user friendly app, but it’s trying really hard. They provide you with all the sticky tape you need, but only one ziptie - which you might think “Why is he saying that?” It’s because some of the wires are EXTREMELY long, while the ones you want to be longer aren’t. I used a total of 6 zip ties to clean up the wiring and keep everything nice and clean (and out of the way of the chain, tracks, rollers, etc.). That is why I cannot give it a higher score. It’s good, but not great. It’s cheap, but that was also a selling point. It works and I’ve had no issues with it, but I also don’t feel confident either. It’s the product you buy and say “Well if it doesn’t work for more than 2 years at least it was only $X.” I shouldn’t feel that way after a week, and yet its price was a selling point. So between a lack of confidence in longevity, a feeling of frustration during setup, the app and directions assuming that you just “know” how to do things (it will tell you to reset the device without any instruction on how to reset in the directions - I had to watch a YouTube video - hold the button till it flashes by the way), I just can’t go any higher. Good not great, and although I would recommend I would also suggest doing a little research before you start installing just to make sure it’s all compatible and you have a good idea of how it will all work.

This is not a promotional, paid, or promised gift review; I am doing this because this product deserves a great review. I’ve had a My-Q system for several years, that kind of worked. Very much a pain to hook up, it would notify me that my doors were open when they weren’t, and changing batteries involved a ladder. But then one door failed, and customer service could not solve the problem without recommending replacing that $150 control board. Then I found this Meross product. I figured what do I have to lose with something so inexpensive. But this is amazing and should be selling for much more. The unit itself is about the size of a deck of cards with an antenna and some plug-in ports. One goes to the USB power supply. Then each door has its own long wire. [The unit can run 3 doors, the kit comes the wires for 2 doors.] One end plugs into the Meross. The other end is the door sensor, which is similar to most alarm system magnets. The wire is already attached to one end, and I screwed this to the wall just above the top of the garage door. I screwed the other magnet to the top of the garage door. It comes with double sided tape, but I felt better putting in screws. There are options, instructions and brackets to how to attach to the J-channel, but the method I used was super easy. Then the 2 wires in the middle of the long wire plug into the back of the door opening motor. I don’t know how this could be simpler. My case was slightly different in that I have two different kinds of Liftmaster motors. These needed accessory kits, that Meross sent right away. It took two different accessory kits for the different motors, but both were easy. The accessory kit is a small box that attaches to those two wires in the middle of the long wire. Then you program that box to the learn button for the garage door. Still, hooking up the accessory kit was maybe 2 minutes and incredibly easy. The app for my phone works perfectly to both tell me the status of the doors and also to allow me to open or close them. You can set times to be alerted, such as a reminder the door has been open for 15 minutes. You can tell the app to automatically close the doors at night just in case your forgot. You can also open/close the doors through Alexa. Note that the units starts beeping before it closes a door to warn anyone around that the door is closing. The Meross unit communicates to the app via your WiFi. This was no problem for me and my detached garage 50’ behind my house as I already use PowerLine to send WiFi to the garage for Nest cameras, TV streaming, etc. But if the distance to your WiFi router is too far, you might need an extender. What I definitely appreciated during setup is that it told me the strength of the WiFi signal it found, which was a very nice touch. I had a couple of occasions to contact customer support to make sure I had ordered the correct unit and arrange for the accessory kits. They always responded right away. In short, I simply do not know how you could find a better deal on a smart remote garage door system.
Easy to install, good features and functionality with the Meross APP, works with other apps too!

I bought this garage door opener because I have three doors and wanted something that came as one unit rather than having three separate controls, one for each door. This opener worked like a charm and was very simple to install. The unit works on a huge number of garage door openers. When I was trying to decide if it would work on mine, I was a little frustrated as there was no list showing which openers it would work with but once I got the product, downloaded the APP and saw the vast selection of openers it was compatible with, I could see why. There are just TOO many to list in the description on the web page! To install the product, you'll need to download the Meross APP first, create an account and then it will walk you through the steps to install the unit, route and connect the wiring, etc. At first, the APP can seem a bit cumbersome when trying to get it to work but it's not difficult at all, once you follow the proper steps in the instructions. There are no fees or subscriptions needed as the APP is free; I like free! With the APP, there are a lot of features you can use to control your garage doors, you can set them up to close at a certain time, get notifications when a door is opened, you can view a record of openings and closings, etc. You can even check the APP and at a glance, see if your doors are open or closed, very nice feature! And of course, the opener works seamlessly with other smart control devices, even multiple ones if you have more than one which you use. I have Alexa as my main control device at home, but I also have Siri on my phone, and I can open or close the doors with either one. If you have the Alexa app on your phone, you can control them with it as well. If you're in your vehicle and don't have the Alexa app or have it listening, you can just tell Siri to open (or close) your garage door. I really love all of this functionality! And you can control the doors from anywhere as long as you have a Wi-Fi signal. Again, just check the Meross APP to see whether they are open or closed. A couple of things I want to mention, one is, this controller only comes with wiring for two doors but it can be used on three doors. This is noted in the description so it's no big deal but, I needed the third set of wiring and had to research it to figure out the right thing to order. Meross, you need to either list that third wiring set in the description for this product or put a link to it on the product page. Secondly, I reached out to Meross customer service, not for a problem, but to ask a technical question and I received a very fast response from Lydia. Her response was concise and easily understood, answering my question exactly, leaving no doubt in my mind about what I was asking - great job! Overall, I highly recommend this product if you're wanting to upgrade and have the ability to control your garage doors other than with switches or remotes. With the Meross APP, you don't need anything else to have that full control over your doors but having the other smart control options is nice as well. I like the product so much, I've already ordered another one to use with the two large garage doors on my workshop. For the money and the features you get, this product is a great value! d this long before I got them!

This feels solid and wasn't too hard to set up with my two garage doors. I wish the app showed which sensor was activating during set up so it was easier to get the sensor on the right door, but a little trial and error got it right. The wires only came with two zip ties a piece, so expect to need more if you don't want them dangling everywhere. Overall a great product for the price

All to often, my wife calls me after she leaves the house to check if she closed he garage door. It's always closed, but I still have to check, so I looked into turning my opener into a smart opener so she could check by herself. After eliminating any device that requires a subscription, the Meross Smart Garage Door Opener emerged as the potential best choice for me and since the price was right, I bought three, one for each door. For some reason, I thought they would be a little larger but they are nice and compact. They arrived quickly and were packaged very well, with three boxes inside the larger (but still small) box, each containing a piece of the puzzle, opener unit, door sensor and cable, and installation accessories (not many). If you're at all handy, installation is pretty easy and straightforward. First plug in the unit (USB powered, adapter and cable provided) and the Meross app and it will connect to your wifi and walk you through the installation process. First one took about an hour, the other two, about 20 minutes each. A few installation tips (I have Marantec openers, yes I had never heard of them before either, but they came with the house and Meross said they are compatible, which they are): * I added a pigtail to the wires that connect to my opener just to give me a little more wiggle room and make it a bit easier. * Have a lot of zip ties around. They provide one, I guess to tie down the unit but I had to zip tie everything near the opener because there were a lot of wires (I also use the opener outlets to power security cameras) and the sensor wire is VERY long (had to coil up more than ten feet). I used 5 inch and 8 inch ties. Didn't need anything larger. * Comes with double stick tape for the sensors, but I also screwed them in, just because (screws are provided). * No special tools needed and if you don't pigtail the connection wires, I'm not sure any tools are needed (other than a ladder, and maybe something to snip the tails off the zip ties). I like the app as well. Somewhat basic but easy to use. Can set up notifications when the door opens/closes, is open for more than a specified period of time (mine is set for 30 minutes), or is open after a certain time (I'm set for 9:00 PM). It will also close the door after a certain length of time (I have this turned off), or after a set time (10:00 PM for me). You can set it to beep when it's closing the door (turned off). Says it works with Alexa , Google Assistant, and optionally, Apple HomeKit but I don't use any of these as I figure there are enough things listening to me already, so I can't comment on those. Also, I've only had it for a short time so can't comment on any longer term issues that may arise, but I'll update this review if necessary. I'm very impressed and if/when I do decide to automate more, I'll look into additional Meross options. To me, it does all I need it to do.

Great item. First, my garage door opener is an older model and cannot be directly controlled by many home automation items that I have found. Meross is aware of this issue and sent me a pair of add-on adapters to add support for my openers. They work perfectly. Installing the device is very straight forward and it integrates perfectly into Apple Home. It supports automatically closing the doors if they are open for too long. The time settings for how long to wait are fully customizable. It also supports push notifications to your phone to notify you that the door(s) were left open -- again, warning time is customizable. Operational response time is very fast too. I tap the icon on my phone and the door starts moving with no noticeable lag. The kit comes with wiring to handle two separate garage doors, so it's perfect if you have one or two garage doors. If you have a third door, it's supported -- you just need to order an additional sensor wire. If you don't have three, just disable the third door in the settings and it doesn't show in the app. It integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google too. I haven't set that up yet, but I'll update if there is anything to add.
Best Smart Home Alexa-Integrated Garage Door Opener

This is the best smart home garage door opener. Over 10 years ago, I used a product called Garagio to do this and it was pretty good, but they got bought out by another company and that company forced the old product to stop working with the Alexa app so that you'd have to buy their new version. Their new version was expensive and it sucked. It required batteries, would only do one door and was twice as expensive as this, and after all that, the Alexa-integration was useless as Alexa would never understand the skill name. Both of those required telling Alexa the skill name, such as "Alexa tell Garagio to open the garage door". This product was really cheap, really easy to install, and works great, there are no useless batteries, it can do both garage doors, and you don't have to use the Alexa skill name, so the voice control is much more natural. You can just say "Alexa open the garage door" and she'll do it. Although if you use more than one door you'll need to give them unique names like "Alexa open the right door". There's nothing bad to say about this product, it is exactly what I wanted. The only thing I can say negative about it, is that you must give it a verbal PIN number to open the door. But that is not the fault of this product, that is a new requirement by Amazon Alexa for security. You can close the doors without a PIN, but you must give a PIN to open a door. Giving the PIN isn't horrible, I just wish there was an option to not do that like these products worked a decade ago, but like I said, that's not the product's fault, that's Amazon that is requiring that. If you want smart home garage opener, this is the one to get. They could double the price and I'd still say this is the one to get, because I've used others that are double the price and they sucked.

Fixes what MyQ can't

Our garage door is a LiftMaster made in the last 5 years. We were highly disappointed in the MyQ functionality. Past versions of the MyQ app would sometimes not work and worst of all it would randomly open the garage door in the middle of the night. Luckily, I was able to set up set up a Samsung Routine which played a loud audio notification if the MyQ app sent a garage opened notification between say 9pm to 5am. The MyQ app does not differentiate notifications at different times of the day. This wouldn't be a problem if the MyQ app had the ability to automatically close the garage door after a set amount of time open (e.g. 30min); in a world of automation, it is such a useful feature, it makes you wonder if the app designers actually use it at home... In steps the Meross smart garage opener. I will say that installation was not as easy as it could have been. As noted earlier, I have a LiftMaster, so I required the separate accessory. Requesting it from Meross was easy and it was delivered in a few days. Now the confusing part about installation- all the instructions I could easily find (on the website, in the app, and on youtube) only specified installation without the accessory. It wasn't until a week after I had received the accessory that I received an automated email from Meross with links to the installation with the accessory. So much confusion could have been prevented if this email was sent during the order or delivery confirmation. Since the accessory is just a new programmable remote control, it does not need to be attached to the actual garage opener. Outside of the accessory installation confusion, everything else was easy and smooth. Setting up automated routines was also very easy. I can now set the garage to automatically close after 30min (I will also receive a warning at 20min in case I need the door to remain open). You also have the ability to close the garage door at a scheduled time (e.g. 11pm every day), but that feature is not useful for my needs and I believe MyQ also has it. Time will tell if the Meross app will have any bugs, but so far so good.

I took off one star because this item should come with a big warning label ( not a little piece of folded paper separate from the instructions ) about the nuanced “Apple Home” requirement. I didn’t realize it was “necessary” instead of “works with” and, most importantly, despite its warning, did not require installing an Apple Home Hub. My primary device is an Android phone however I usually set things up via my ipad and full size keyboard for ease of use, so a bit of mixed technologies here. I test-assembled the components, loaded the apps and did the configurations. That’s when I found out I had to download Apple Home. Free, no biggie. It comes with a warning that says anything loaded on it will only work from devices that are on the same wireless network unless I install an Apple Hub. Rather than return the device I decided to continue the test and see if I used the Meross app - not Home - If everything would function remotely. I installed it in phases to test it , afterwards went back and properly wire-tied and put in all screws and final test. All seemed OK. I noted the install put three icons on the Meross home screen for the garage doors - didn’t see a way during install to decline the third one as I only have two. So I swiped the unnecessary one off the home screen, got the “do you want to delete” and did, it completely wiped out the device - not just the one door. I worked incrementally backwards until finally I had to physically uninstall the device from the openers, cleared and deleted both apps ( Home and Meross ) , reset the device several times as, once “assigned”, it has to go back to factory reset. Finally all reloaded and working. In the Meross app I must have found the tiny icon on each doors icon is the “settings edit”. Since it is one physical device hosting controls of up to three doors, the edit function on any of the door icons has access to all three ( Port 1,2,3). Settings have to be done for each one ( this is where to turn display of Port 3 off to get it off home screen ). Options here to automate an open or close function ( such as “close door at 9 PM if open” or “notify me at 10 PM if door still open” ). Final tests all good: Opened a door with the wall button . It showed as Open on the app about a minute later. Put a bucket in front of the eye sensor and tried to shut the door. It automatically stopped and Meross app threw an error message “opening time exceeded” . Since this was a closing issue, and I only saw “opening time” setting choices in the app, it probably should say “operating time” as that’s more accurate. Put a 2x4 on the floor ( lower than the eye ). Door came down to it and opened and gave same error message. Customer service ( email ) was great ! Response was so thorough and complete I wonder if it was AI. :}
