Great portable scanner
By Eric on Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2022
I purchased this to use for work and various other things I am involved with where it can be used. I work on the road in the field a lot and it has helped me reduce the paper a lot. I'm a tech type and this was an extremely simple install. Software is very intuitive, I have not yet used " paper port" but I will try it next.

Utterly Useless
By Mike Hill on Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2024
DONT BUY IF YOU WANT WIRELESS!!!! You cannot scan multiple documents without going back to your computer to click a button. On any other MFP wireless scanner, you take documents, you go to the scanner, you put in a document, you push the scan button. It scans and saves (or opens a dialog). You put in your next document, you push the scan button, repeat. YOU CANNOT DO THAT WITH THIS PIECE OF JUNK!!!! You have to start the scan job first from your computer. THEN you can load in one document. Then you have to go BACK to your computer and save it. Then load in your next document. My computer is in my office. It's a beautiful day. I want to go outside and sip a drink while scanning in my receipts for the week. TOO BAD!!! NO SIR!!!! In other words, the WIRELESS IS USELESS. Oh, and it took tech support the better part of 45 minutes to tell me that, lol.

Great scanner with unfortunately short battery life

This scanner is slim and works flawlessly with the app. The only downfall is its short battery life. After about scanning 25 to 30 receipts the battery goes dead, which can be extremely frustrating. I thought maybe it was a bad battery so i purchased the same scanner, newer model only to find out it had the same issue. If they could fix this issue, it would be the ultimate portable scanner.

Had this for almost a year and was relatively happy with it, then suddenly pages are showing up with a large black band on the right side of page.
Setup is a pain

I just used this thing to scan a bunch of my receipts for my taxes. I do like it, but there's also some significant room for improvement. Fortunately the areas of improvement can be addressed via future software updates, the hardware is fine. First I'll start with the bad: I originally got this for my wife and she could NOT set it up. I took over setup duties and found out why. This is one of those devices that has its own Wifi, so you have to set your phone to the scanner's wifi in order to get them to talk... if you've worked with modern security cameras etc it's not too surprising, but the verbage in the installer just plain failed to convey that idea. In simpler terms: I was able to set this up because I had set up something similar to it before. I do feel like they really really tried to make the installation clear, but in a way I think they overcooked it. My other issue with the software is that I scanned like 30 items and I had to go into each scan and send it to my Mac. Epson, please, please PLEASE add a bulk-option so I can scan a bunch of stuff, highlight it all, and send it to my machine! Okay, that's really it for all the bad stuff. Actually my experience with it is pretty good, once it was set up I mean. If you're wondering why I would want a battery-powered scanner, the answer is: When I needed to do scanning the kitchen counter was the best place to lay it all out. I just as easily could have taken it to a coffee shop or a friend's house or whatever. I could have taken it on a business trip and used it to scan receipts for my expense reports. (That might actually happen soon...) I also like that I can have a number of devices hooked up to it, so my phone and my wife's phone and my wife's iPad are linked up to it. (provided they're all on my wifi) Nobody has to 'own' the device. I'm glad I got this, but yeah I did only give it 3 stars. However, if Epson does a software update that lets me batch-select a bunch of files and send them to iCloud etc, I'll be perfectly happy to bump it up to 4. I just feel like as is they seem to think I'd only want to scan one or two things and that's a huge oversight for a portable device. Oh if you're wondering about the battery life, I got 15-20 scans on one charge. It's USB-powered though so I just hooked up a battery pack to it and continued scanning.

After having THREE of these, I can tell you that they're basically trash. Do they scan photos, documents, and other paper items well? Yes. Do they last long? No. After a few months the rollers stop pulling documents in, and when they do pull the documents in, they pull them in at an angle, and you have to go into post-scan corrections and alter the document, which depending on how much of a top-bottom margin you have, may not be possible, as i have experienced on many occasions. I have had issues with images coming out with streaks on them, where the original was inspected and found to have no marks in that area... I even went as far as using my desktop digital microscope to examine the effected area, and never found so much as a hair on the piece of paper. Text documents that are scanned will inexplicably come out with whole letters missing from the paragraph, for no explainable reason... Before I even contacted Epson, on two of my scanner, I purchased a cleaning kit that had alcohol cleaning pads (thick paper) and a dry paper. You're supposed to put those in and it cleans the rollers. Didn't work at all.. Or if it did, it was only for a few sheets, then went back to being trash, when the rollers stiffened up again. And when you contact EPSON support regarding these issues, they put you thru the most aggravating experiences. I have a recorded phone conversation for 40 minutes of a tech walking me thru steps of returning a defective scanner, RETURN ONLY, not even technical diagnosis or troubleshooting steps, for the second time within a year, only for her to tell me I had to let them put a hold on my credit card, and send me a refurbished one, then return the one I had. After giving them all the required information they still got my name spelling and address spelling wrong after repeating it THREE TIMES over the phone in phonetics (saying "A for Apple, B for Brave" letter by letter). Ultimately, after these experiences with one of their copy/print/scan units and these last 3 DS-80 portable scanners, I'm done with EPSON products.
Not good for large quantity scanning

My organization used these to scan tax documents for contact-less tax preparation during Covid. Our drawback was the computer software/driver, not the device itself. Very poor software for Chromebooks, but better software for PC or Apple. Double side is a pain. And, a surprising number of banks issue tax documents on paper that is a fraction larger than 8.5 inches wide so it doesn't fit without trimming or carefully folding the edges. Jams easily.
