STERN WARNING !! DO NOT BRICK YOUR NEW TRI-BANDER!
By SO-GLAD on Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2025
I WARN YOU NOW! DO NOT USE "CHIRP" to program this BAOFENG "UV5RX3" TRI-BANDER! ** 5/20/25 I received my 3rd BAOFENG Tri-Bander today and thought I would search for USER program FILES already created buy owners, but a SLEW of 'red flags' went up for this TRI-BAND BOAFENG radio AND CHIRP! Apparently CHIRP has no idea how to deal with the 220MHz BAND, so it simply DELETES ALL of your "220" data! EVEN if you try to 'backup' your NEW "UV5RX3" BEFORE you CHIRP; CHIRP won't KNOW how to deal with ~ or RESTORE your UV5RX3 220MHz BAND and FREQUENCIES! *JUST DO A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR: "BAOFENG LOST 220 MHZ". Be sure to see the REDDIT posts and many others. I understand there is NO fix for this issue, but I do see many YOUTUBE productions? I didn't seek anything for 220MHz and there may be something there? IF your 220MHz Band is toast the 150MHz and 450MHz frequencies should still program and work as designed, just NO 220MHz Band! YES, "CHIRP" is VERY tempting and CAN save tons of time on your "UV5R" programming, but stay clear of anything "CHIRP" that may tamper with your 220MHz band. **THERE IS a free and NICE program FOR the "UV5XR3", but you will need to SEARCH the radioditty.com site for it! THAT program works GREAT for all 3 BANDS. I can't say more about that site because they are a AMAZON competitor. This new "UV5RX3" works perfectly and I use it to access my "NEW RETEVIS 97L REPEATER"! It is NEW here on AMAZON and it's REALLY SPIFFY! 25 WATTS AND100% DUTY CYCLE with it' own Duplexer inside! It is quite small WITH 16 Channels , Oh ya! Truly worth every dime. Order yours today!

My first Baofeng experience didn't go well
By J. Kemp on Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2023
Update on 2nd unit: The replacement unit has receive problems as well. While scanning I noticed it wasn't stopping much on any programmed frequencies. I pushed the MONI button on a popular local repeater and heard some transmissions from the repeater but lots of static. I unscrewed the antenna almost all the way and receive improved, but when screwed in it deteriorated. I tried another known good antenna and had the same problem. I'm not sure what the problem is but I don't have the time to troubleshoot. It's going back too and I'm ending my Baofeng experiment. Oh, I did lower the squelch levels in Chirp, so that's not the issue. I finally broke down and ordered my first Baofeng. It arrived yesterday. I charged the battery and programmed it with CHIRP. It all went well until I tried to use it. The radio was as deaf as a post. With the squelch OFF, hearing static, I could only hear a station next door to me, no other stations or repeaters. With the squelch at 1, nothing would break the squelch, whether using the stock rubber duck, a Nagoya triband antenna or a base antenna. Needless to say, I shipped it back to Amazon this morning and am awaiting a replacement. If the replacement is good, I will update this review. In talking with other Baofeng owners, it sounds like these radios can be hit or miss. The Baofeng lottery. You may need to go through a radio or two or three to get one where all the functions work like they should.
