HP EliteDesk 705 AMD A8 500GB Mini Desktop

I have bought three of these refurbished HP EliteDesk minis based on AMD processors. I have bought all of them from CNB Computers, doing business here as "Quality Recertified". Buying a refurbished computer is two stories: One is the brand of computer. The other is the refurbisher. It is worthwhile talking about both. Three brands effectively dominate the refurbished-computer market: Dell, Lenovo and HP. I had some poor experiences with Dell equipment, so I am shy about buying them in the after-market. Lenovo's equipment was pretty good in my experience, but its mini-sized boxes are short on USB ports. I have had good experience with HP equipment, both new and refurbished (the term "brick outhouse" comes to mind). These EliteDesk minis are neatly designed and manufactured, on a par with the company's larger and more costly systems. Most important, these boxes have an abundance of USB ports -- four USB3 and 2 USB2. The boxes work nicely. 8gb RAM and a half-terrabyte of disk (one of mine came with an SSD) makes for real zippy startups and program loading and so on. AMD processors are solid performers (I have seen the discussions, Intel vs AMD; lots of benchmark numbers, little of front-of-screen performance, which is the only thing that matters, really). I suspect (and will eventually try...) doubling that memory would put these boxes in graphics/game playing/video editing category for all but the most serious users. So, nice hardware to start with. That would mean nothing, if Quality Recertified (CNB Computers) wasn't doing a good job. I suspect they cherry-pick the units they will recondition; I also think they understand that the result has to make the customer happy -- a matter not only of performance but also appearance. The computer itself is spotless, inside and out (yup, I looked...). The company supplies a new keyboard, and it is entirely acceptable (I used it for awhile with my old computer while making sure I had moved everything that needed moving), a mouse (ho-hum, another basic mouse; I prefer trackballs, but this was OK) and just in case, a USB WiFi dongle and a (redundant) power cord. Two of the systems I bought were supplied with HP power supplies; the third came with a third-party power supply matching the HP specs (not hard; these are essentially laptop power supplies). Vendor quality is best measured in how problems are handled. One system arrived with what was clearly the wrong power supply -- on top of which, it was sticky! This happened on the Friday going into Labor Day weekend. I sent a note; the new power supply arrived the following Wednesday. In short, reasonably good speed in impossible circumstances. There are NO problems with delivery time (orders arrive 3-5 days before the due date set by Amazon, sent UPS with signature confirmation). Finally -- no small matter -- Quality Recertified is delivering the goods at very competitive prices. That makes this customer grin not a little. Cheshire Cat lookalike, &c..
