Crappy software, ok sound, not worth full price
By Empire Builder on Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2018
Just set this up last night. I tried out bluetooth, which worked fine, then I downloaded the Klipsch app onto my phone. Had no trouble finding the player and connecting it to my wifi network. The next thing the app wants you to do is update the software on the box. Unfortunately, this failed (twice) and the "troubleshooting" help consists of a link to a web page that says something along the lines of, "if it fails 5 times then you should probably try updating manually". Really? This is somebody's idea of a good system, that if it ONLY fails 4 times, that's normal? Anyway, I downloaded the DTS play-fi app and the update worked. Not sure why, because judging from the app screens they are running the exact same code. Maybe I just needed to do it 3 times, not 2. :-) The item is smaller than I expected. It does put out a lot of sound, but let's not kid ourselves, there's no real bass here... it probably goes down to about 50Hz if I had to guess. It looks terrific and goes with the decor-theme that I'm trying for, but if I had paid full price for it, I'd probably have sent it back. (I got it on a woot deal, it was a refurb.) I think the only reason they can charge this kind of money is that they are competing with Sonos, which is priced exorbitantly. Bottom line: It looks great and sounds ok. I'd never pay full price for this. For the price I paid (around 330), I probably could have put together a small bluetooth amp and a pair of bookshelf speakers, but it wouldn't look as nice. UPDATE: I decided to wash the car yesterday so I took this out to the garage. At high volume, this thing rocks! Not sure if the acoustics of having it at the back of the garage and listening to it outside played a part, but wow, it was great accompaniment to car-washing. Indoors, I listen at a much lower volume, and at lower volumes, it's still just "ok". BTW speaking of volume, there are only 16 discrete volume settings that span the range from inaudible to deafening. What? Are they using 4-bit micro controllers in a $500 product? Absurd design decision. So here's my updated summary: sounds great at high volumes, even outdoors. Sucks for playing background music indoors, when you can't quite set it to the volume level you want and the sound is just "meh" at lower volumes.
