I wish I could like them...
By Seg303 on Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2016
I read all about how there is a breaking in period for Birkenstocks and was prepared--or so I thought. I wore them about the house for a half hour several days before out of the house to the grocery store and some other errands. Within an hour my feet were pretty achy but having no other option I pushed on and the time out amounted to about 4 and a half hours. When I reached my car the shoes came off--and I attempted the next day to try again but just putting my foot in them the ache started. The toe piece on one side hit my toe in a bad spot so --although every sandal I have are thongs--it hurt. Although there is no blister as soon as the piece touhes that toe it hurts, the raised area that hits about mid ball of the foot (or just under in the middle of the foot) was just terribly uncomfortable and in putting my foot back into the sandal it immediately started to ache again. I have given up and contacted the company who sells them. I am preparing to ship them back. I really wanted to like these sandals and for them to be the most comfortable thing I've ever worn but I guess I just can't take the "break in" period. Like the style and the shoe I just can't wear them.

These sandals were exactly what I have been wanting! Birkenstock sizes are a little off, so if you have the chance to try them on in a store I would do that to find your correct size. I am usually a 7.5-8, and I ordered the size 38. I was waiting to write a review of these sandals until I broke them in. I've had them about a month now and they are finally broken in!! The toe post is definitely a little bothersome at first, and the rivet on the underside of the strap that holds to toe post in place leaves a small black stain on my foot from the black painted coating it had. The trick to getting these to fit most comfortably is making sure your foot is placed properly in them - which means your heel should be at the aback of the shoe, even if you have shorter toes that don't reach as far as you'd like (my big toe is a little short, but my other toes line up nicely). Be prepared to experience some pain while breaking these in. I started off by wearing them just a couple hours a day around the house, then slowly built up as they became more broken in. You will know when they are broken in as the shape of your foot will be completely imprinted, and the shoe conforms to the shape of your foot. At week 2 I wore them for several hours on a walk around downtown, and that was a mistake! Lots of blisters to prove it. There is tons of information online about breaking these in and taking care of them properly. It's definitely best to take your time breaking these in, but with that being said, these sandals are AWESOME now that I have put in the hours to break them in. I love the neutral color of the tobacco and I can say these are 100% authentic Birkenstock sandals. So happy with my purchase!

It's Birkenstock...if you're a fan, you don't need to be told anything else. If you're not a fan or haven't tried them yet, find a pair and give them a try. I really don't wear anything else because of the way they support my feet. About this particular pair, I do like them except for one thing. Before I tell you about the one thing, I want to say that the one thing won't keep me from wearing them, but I may not buy this style again when they wear out in 5 or 6 years. The one thing is the tab over the toes. It took a little getting used to. It bugs me for the first few minutes and then I forget about it. I'd rather it wasn't there, but it is, so I'll deal with it and still wear them. The point of Birkies is the bed of the shoe and the sole. NOTHING wrong on that score. Also, I want to say that when I ordered these, I didn't realize that they came from Germany. I was still in the grace period when I realized it, and I could have cancelled the order. But, I read other Amazon reviewers who commented on how fast they arrived, so I took a chance. I am so glad that I did. My particular order beat the projected delivery date by at least two weeks. I ordered another item from another major US retailer the same day, and the Birks from Germany beat that package by 3 days. So, don't let the "shipped from Germany" throw you off. They get major points for efficient shipping in my book!
Over all I love than

Bottoms wear quickly and get slick so be careful. Otherwise I really like them.

I have a pair of knock off birkenstocks that i got from Target a couple years ago and i thought...why not bite the bullet and get the REAL thing because i loved them so much and already wore them out. I purchased this Gizeh thong in the stone color which is a matte grey color and I LOVE IT!!! I got it in the mail yesterday and i tried them on right away. I'm normally a size 8 shoe and i have long toes and a flat foot... i got a size 39 and i think they fit perfectly! I did need to tighten the strap to the 2nd to last hole but if i would have gotten a 38 i think the toe area would have been too small as you can see from the picture they fit PERFECT! I would say my foot is average width but leaning on the wider side and these have so much room and it's so comfortable! I don't feel like they're uncomfortable at all, even at the thong part between the toes. I'm sure they're going to get more and more comfortable as i wear them. I'm so happy with my purchase because i know my back and legs have been hurting because i've been wearing very flat sandals. I got this style because it's a lot cuter than the Arizona style, even though i like that style my boyfriend doesnt...hahah so we settled with this one!
A must for fallen arches/flat feet/plantar fasciitis

If you suffer from plantar faciitis let me start by saying I feel your pain. I had a case so bad that 3 cortisone shots did not help. Long story short I eventually had shock wave therapy on my foot, and after 3 months of healing (and a month in a sexy walking boot!) my foot was better. Since then, I have been super careful about the types of shoes I wear. In many cases (like mine) the PF was the result of poor arch support. I have custom orthotics that I wear in my sneakers at the gym, but I certainly can't wear them all the time. That's where these shoes fit in, I actually live in these shoes during the summer! If you've never worn Birkenstocks before be aware that you will need to break them in a bit. I would start by wearing them a couple hours a day for the first couple of weeks, then you will see find that they fit you like a glove. Don't be discouraged if your feet feel sore the first couple of times wearing them, over time the cork will mold to your feet. As far as the look, this is about as cute as a Birkenstock can get. I live in New York City and I see these all the time in the summer, both by tourists and city dwellers alike. There's a reason they are so popular, they are "cute enough" and super comfortable. I now own 2 pairs.
Little Large For True Size 8. 39 Ordered

I ordered a size 39 which I have had in other brands. I'm a true size 8 with medium width foot and these were to loose on my foot. Great Birkenstock quality as usual. Just watch your size. Returned and bought another pair size 38 locally. Needed on vacation.
Cute and sturdy

I have been wanting a sandal that I could travel in and feel comfortable in and I think these will be it! I went to a Birkenstock store and talked to a woman who has been wearing and selling them for 30 years and is a big believer. She told me that there are two styles of softness in the sole- the blue detail indicates that the sole is softer and the yellow detail is firmer and more traditional. She explained that while the softer sole initially is more comfortable, it doesn't last long. She noted that after you break in the harder sole, it molds to your feet more than the softer and is ultimately more comfortable! She said that they do need to be broken in and it takes the heat from your feet and the weight of your body to make them the amazing shoes everyone raves about. I am a 39/8.5 and I got a 38. I am a 39 in Dansko normally. Update: One year later I bought my second pair and I cannot say enough about these! They are so comfortable that I wear them every day- not kidding. I bought a new pair that I can wear with dresses! My feet never hurt and my sciatica is gone too! Pros: Sturdy, good for posture and correcting your step, durable, comfortable (in the future!) and cute! Cons: Takes time to break in, the piece between the toes is plastic and uncomfortable (I am hoping this will get better)
Stylish but not as comfortable as I'd like

I have wide flat feet with plantar fasciitis and I read that Birkenstocks are great for feet pain. I am a size 6 and according to the size chart, I should wear a 37. I found that the Gizeh ran a little big because I had to exchange the 37 for a 36 which fit well on me. I read tons of reviews about how comfortable these sandals are but to be honest, they're not THAT comfortable. The ridge on the sole in the toe area bothers me. I also read that it takes a few wears before the sole conforms to your foot but that ridge still bothers me after 3 months of wear. I walked about two miles one day last week in these sandals and ended up with a blister where that ridge was rubbing against the bottom of my second toe. The sandal is fine for light walking. I haven't noticed any conformity to my feet yet. As for the style, these are pretty popular as I've seen then on several women while out and about. They are cute with shorts, maxis, casual skirts, and casual pants. I'll keep wearing them for the rest of the summer but not for long treks.
