Impressive quality for the price

I purchased this on Prime Day as a loaner rod. I ordered the 5wt 8 1/2 ft model. The rod is very nicely constructed. The cork is better than expected for the money and the alignment dots are all perfect. The rod is a moderate-fast action that is suitable for beginning and more experienced anglers alike. I took this out to catch some stocker trout just to try it and I was really impressed. It's soft enough for more delicate presentations, accurate enough for sight fishing and it has just enough backbone to land a bigger fish or buck a little wind. If you're just wanting a good rod and you're not worried about showing off, then I see no reason why this couldn't be your primary rod. I think it's going to be my go-to when I'm fishing smaller rivers. This thing really is a little gem.

Line not spooled correctly
By PNK on Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2023
I own several Redington fly rods of various weights, as well as waders, boots, and more from Redington. Clearly I like their products. This year I have purchased 2 of these fly rods. The first, I purchased as an 8-weight with salt water line. I could not be happier with this rod, reel and line. It has a very fast action, which I like in a bigger rod and the line shoots through the guides with accuracy and ease. I have caught salmon in salt water and even used it in fresh water for large rainbows as a streamer rod. It performs very well. The second one I bought is a complete disaster. It too is an 8-weight, but with fresh water line for my lake fishing and steelhead. On this reel, the line seems to have been spooled incorrectly. As it comes off the reel, it twists and curls immensely. It's awful to cast and the line wraps around everything including the butt of the rod constantly. I pulled the line all the way out to the backer and ran it behind my boat to try to get the twist out of the line, but to no avail. It's a mess and renders the rod nearly useless. It's past my return date, so I guess I will now have to throw the line away and spend more money on a new fly line to make it right. Fall steelhead season is coming up in a couple months, and the rod will be impossible to fish effectively for these challenging fish. Redington, if you're reading, I'd like you to fix this problem for me as a good customer. Redington has always been a good service company when I have had to repair a broken rod twice in the past. UPDATE: Redington asked me to return the reel with the line to them so they could replace the defective Rio line with new Rio line. I paid to send it back to Redington. They kept it for a few weeks, then sent it back without changing the line. They sent it back with the same defective Rio line and did not provide any information. I reached out to Redington to request they fix it and they did not reply. So Far Bank, owners of Redington, Sage and Rio does not stand behind their products like they have in the past. Nor do they value me as a customer that has purchased many rods, reels, fly lines, clothing, accessories etc. They have received thousands of dollars of my money over the years, but none going forward. I just purchased a Spey rod and reel, and rather than buying their brands, I purchased Lamson, OPST, and Echo for this kit.
