It died completely after the 30-day return window
By Jerry Wang on Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2022
Update: I had a replacement from WD in three weeks and I have updated the review from 1 star to 3. I had data accumulated over the years on multiple portable HDD. Although none of them have failed I decided to consolidate all my data onto a large and presumably more reliable SSD. My 2TB WD Blue 3D NAND was delivered on Aug 7, 2022. It worked well initially then gradually became intermittent, e.g., sometimes gave me folder empty message, etc. By the time I realized the disk was completely dead it has passed the September 9 return window, and I already had about 560 GB data on this disk. I contacted Amazon product support without any progress. Then I contacted Western Digital product support and submitted the case as follows. Again I did not get any solution so I went ahead with a Warranty Claim. I will update about how successful I am when it’s completed. To rescue the 560 GB data on the disk I paid $69.95 to purchase one month subscription of a data recovery software. I also paid Western Digital $4.95 for a 3-day select UPS to return the disk (this is a WD only price). Long story: 1. Windows is able to detect the drive, however indicating the drive is full (Picture 1). 2. Going to the “hardware” tab it says, “the device is working properly” (Picture 2). 3. I then moved on to the “tool” tab (Picture 3 – Tool). I clicked “Check” and got “The disk check could not be performed because Windows can’t access the disk” (Picture 4). 4. Through various debugging efforts I also got “F is not accessible” and “The media is write protected” (Picture 5). 5. I downloaded WD Drive Utilities and Acronis True Image for Western Digital. I wanted to recover my 560GB data and then repair the disk if possible. But none of them helped. The only option was to wipe out all existing data and create a new partition as a new disk which was not what I wanted.
