Very quiet 8TB External USB disk drive.

I bought the WD 8TB EASYSTORE external HDD to replace a crappy WD 8TB My Book Desktop external drive I had ordered and returned. I kept the My Book Desktop drive for just a couple hours which was long enough to convince me it was low-end junk and going back for a full refund. Amazon was awesome about the refund and the return process was so simple. On the other hand, the 8TB EASYSTORE is super quiet while the 8TB My Book Desktop drive had an annoying low pitched vibration that could be heard and felt as it sat on my desk. In comparison, the EASYSTORE is dead silent and I don't even notice it. The 8TB WD EASYSTORE costs more than the 8TB My Book Desktop HDD but it is well worth it to me . It is rumored that the 8TB EASYSTORE uses the higher quality WD Red NAS disk which is known to be quiet and reliable.

1 out of 6 ain't bad, oh wait, yes it is.

(Note, I'm a R&D Engineer for Storage, and I deal with different storage devices and issues all the time, so I put my own equipment through the paces. I currently run - and test - more than 50TB of storage and this is what I do day in, day out.) These drives used to be a fantastic bargain. Originally, they shipped with the WD Red drives (originally), and were an incredible bargain for the quality of drive that you got. Then WD decided to cut corners. Then even more corners. They started shipping with white label drives (instead of the NAS grade ones), then there started to be disk integrity errors. The last two that I got (I like to keep the same types of devices instead of having a hodgepodge of different vendors) were both DOA, with misaligned USB pins so bad that you couldn't even insert the accompanying USB cable. The image that I'm attaching with this review may be hard to see, but the USB port in the drive case is defective. All in all, only the very first drive that I got (out of a total of 6) has actually worked with any stability and reliability. Unless you plan on spinning the roulette wheel and buying one of these to see if you can rip out a WD Red drive and put it into your own NAS box, I'd avoid these like the plague.
