Works much better than I expected! And the Price is RIGHT! NO Cloud Cam Needed!

First I'd like to say, I pretty much have a smart home. There is n't much in my house that I cannot control with Alexa. I have about 15 Alexa devices from Dots to Echo Plus's all around my home and property. I can voice command or run routines on just about everything in my house. I can control my pool pump/pool heater/ceiling fans/lights/grow lights/sump pump/cameras/vetilation/roomba and much more. Some people even think that I may be a robot...LOL. But there was one thing I was always lacking.......the ability to lock and unlock my doors with Alexa. That is until now. I now have THREE of these on my three house doors and I could not be happier with them. I do not have the cloud cam. These are Zigbee devices and all you need to make these work is a Zigbee hub. But the Echo Plus has a Zigbee hub built in! So Once you install them and place them in learning mode, you use your Alexa app on your phone and search for new devices. That's it! The App will find them and now you can use them! You can even use them in routines! For instance, I Tell Alexa "Good Night" each night when I go to bed, then she shuts off all my lights, turns on my outside lights and Locks my doors! And sometimes she even reminds me to lock them! (New feature of Alexa called Hunches). She will notify me if I have left a door unlocked or a light on. This is great! I can lock or unlock my door from anywhere with my cell phone (or even my smart watch!) I can also voice command her to unlock my door, she will ask me what my PIN number is, then unlock! (You set your pin number in the Alexa app). So far, they have been working flawlessly. Installation was a bit tricky on the first one, but with anything new, you just follow the direction...after that, the other 2 were easy! Only about 10 minutes each from start to finish. This installs on the inside of your door, leaving the outside of your deadbolt unchanged. This is also nice as it keeps the look of your door/home the same as before. If you are looking for an upgrade to your smart home and to be able to lock/unlock your doors remotely or by voice, then look no further! No need to break the bank with $200+ devices, you really can't beat this price for such an item. I am very happy with these and believe me, I know smart homes.

I purchased this product as I purchased a smart 916 touch pad lock several months back. Since then I have purchased multi automated home products operating off the Ring Alarm system base station which is Z-Wave. Based on the lay out the house, the garage has become the central point of entry now, I purchased this lock so the interior garage door could be opened with the ring app, and all access would be in one place. I was excited to see the lock also was compatible with Amazo Key. Just recently purchased a garage door that works with Amazon key, and figure it would nice to unlock the lock without hard keys and from multiple platforms. The advertisement was not very clear the camera was needed, and the posted in the add stated Z-Wave would work. Fsdt forward to install, the lock will not conbectt to the Ring alarm system. I called kwikset tech support, the tech tells me the lock won't work with Ring as it is a "Zigbi" lock, and not Z- Waze. The tech tells Mr that Z- Waze locks are sold After reviewing this product ad again to make sure I did not missing something, I searched the 914 z wave model converters locks, and they are more then twice the price at $123+. Feels like bait and switch. No cool amazon, not cool. Picture info needs to be changed ASAP....

I bought this product in order to be able to give access to by Condo to my girlfriend (plus it is a cool tech item, lol). While a failure in that regard, two months out I still have mixed feeling with regards to my purchase. To start off with the install was fairly complex, but doable for the average user. I had the misfortune/fortune, to have bought a different version of this lock previously (which is a different story) with the instructions only written in Spanish (which I unfortunately can't read). While that was frustrating it did make the installation of this lock fairly easy, as I learned from my previous experience from the other lock. Pairing it to the hub (which I bought separately) was fairly easy, and so was issuing the keys. Overall ascetically it's one of the best smart lock options out there, it's easy to use, allows for easy touch keyless entry, and for remote monitoring/key issuance. Those are the pros, the cons so far after two months (and why we are now back to physical keys at least as a backup) as I can tell are two, and for which I subtracted on star each. The first is that for a $200 purchase you shouldn't have to shell out another $100 for a separate hub to get remote non-Bluetooth access. At the $200 mark it already ranks as one of the more expense smart home purchases that you can make, and at $300 (with the hub) it's just ridiculous for what it is. The second and less serious (but perhaps even more annoying) is that they either need to pack better complimentary batteries with the lock or make you buy your own separately. About two weeks after I bought the lock, the lock began experiencing connectivity issues with the hub and a week or so later died. As I suspected, it was the batteries, and after replacing them with Amazon Basic rechargeable batteries (a good investment btw if you seriously into the smart home world as everything seems to run off of batteries) it started working again and I haven't had a problem since. At a $200 price point, in my opinion they should at least provide you with a decent set of batteries if they are going to bother. I also suspect, given the similarity of my issues to many of the reviews I read before buying, that Kwikset could eliminate a substantial number of complaints about their product and improve user reviews substantially by just providing purchasers with better batteries (and thus increase sales in the process). It's sad such an easy fix goes overlooked for an otherwise great product. Overall I would describe it as a potentially great product with lots of potential. At a better price point and with different batteries, it could be great.

This is great! It works like a charm. The picture is of the driver trying to deliver my package but I accidentally forgot to unlock the safety lock. She took the time to call Amazon and get instructions on what to do with delivery. She could see my car was there and got approval to make doorstep delivery. So Incase you forget they will attempt doorstep deliver. The video is showing how the delivery works. I wanted to post the ring video of it but it would only let me post 1 video. Note: This home key does not come with exterior key pad. The exterior will remain the same. The proper home key cam cable is included with this package. Install was a little tricky but easy fix. I did have to reach out for support which they were great help. My dead bolt had a square pin and the adapters all had the square half moon pin. I was able to use pack B and that still worked. The modifications I had to make to the door jam was to drill the striker plate hole deeper. I kept getting door jam even though the door was locked. That’s because the deadbolt was not able to extend all the way in order to properly make the sensor. Once I did that no problem. I did have to make adjustments with striker plate. The most important thing is going to be a good clear alignment between the deadbolt and door jam. So if your door isn’t smooth to begin with then your probably gonna have to make adjustment. It’s well worth the effort! It did take an extra hour trying to get it all lined up but that’s not any fault of the product. I really love this way of getting my packages.

You DON'T need an Amazon Cloud Cam

Took some figuring how to pair the lock to our Alexa/Amazon account without the Amazon Cloud Cam (4 hours trying different things and scouring the internet... a few beers, a few tears and a million cuss words) because no, of course, like a lot of you I didn't read that part of the title/description (I bought it on Prime Days and I was at work, so I only half read the title)... and then I read the magic words on the Amazon description of the product... "Alexa, discover my devices" to my Echo Show and as if by magic, it paired the lock! NO AMAZON CLOUD CAM REQUIRED (but you may need a Echo Show or EchoPlus 2nd Gen)! We bought two, so I got cocky and thought, great, I'll try that again, nope... didn't work, because apparently once you pair a lock or security device to Alexa, you must pair additional locks through the app... but amazingly, I went through the app, and it did not take 4 hours to pair it (5 minutes). I swear, I did the same steps for the first lock and it just wouldn't pair initially. Both of my locks are now paired, we can lock our doors remotely with our phones, or by voice command in the house with any of our Alexa devices. The actual installation was easy and the instructions were adequate. A cool feature of it is in order to get Alexa to UN-lock the door by voice command you have to enable it (and I don't recommend it as someone shouting loud enough can unlock your door if your Alexa is in range, as mine is), but the default is you can't unlock the door by voice command. You must also enable it to be unlocked through the app (and this is a separate permission through the app) so if you enable your phone to unlock the lock, that does not mean you enabled the voice command to unlock it. This does NOT affect your ability to lock the door by voice command (which makes sense), or by the phone app. I have set a schedule so the lock locks itself at a certain time of night (because I have teenagers who forget), and you can also set the lock to lock after a certain amount of time after you unlock it (say 30 seconds). I'm rather pleased with it now that we have them set up. I will say this about the Amazon Cloud Cam requirement, it requires you to set up with Amazon Key app... which if that service is not available in your area (as it was not in ours) because it is still a VERY new service, then you're out of luck, you can't download and set up anything with the app, and I find that to be a HUGE flaw. Even if Amazon does not deliver, it should enable to app to set up devices and hook them up to your Alexa(s) without that part of the service... why do I care? I've got my locks working? Because I also bought a garage door opener, that also uses Amazon Key, and it is the ONLY way to connect the garage door to your Alexa (even though set up does NOT require an Amazon Cloud Cam... doesn't even mention it in the set up instructions)... and as of the time I'm writing the review I have NOT found a way to link THAT with my Alexa/Amazon account, so for now, it remains a separate app to run... which is fine, just a minor inconvenience to have to set up a separate schedule and parameters for it. How is that relevant to *this* review? If you're a sucker and bought the Amazon Cloud Cam to pair this lock to your Alexa/Amazon account using Amazon Key, it may not let you just because the service isn't available in your area... so buyer beware! All that said, I fully recommend this lock as a way to hook up your lock to your Alexa!
This unit need to come with big warning label to install Amazon Key app and Amazon cloud cam key edition first, NO KEVO app

I hated this after 4 hours of wasted time and almost returned it before I finally figured out how to install it by installing Amazon Key app and configure the Amazon cloud camera first. Finally, it is a keeper, but so much time is wasted and lost, I hope Kwikset need to realize a lot of people rely on Youtube to install locks and could go don the wrong path. I give Amazon cam key edition 4 star rating, for if you install that first, everything will fall into place really easy. Part of my fault by not reading the instruction, but rely on youtube videos to install it, I was stuck on configuring it with Kevo app and try to setup connection between this lock and cell phone, I installed Kevo app on 3 cell phones and never works. it wasted me 4 hours. Finally, I begin to look at the Amazon cloud cam and find out it needs to install Amazon key app first and then configure the lock through the camera. So my guts feeling for Kwikset, why there is no warning sign, the Kwikset Convert Smart Lock should be wrapped in a 9-inch size octagon stop sign with the warning on it saying Amazon cloud cam key edition and Amazon key app should be installed first to configure the lock and DO NOT USE Kevo to configure it. If they have that STOP sign, a lot of 1-star user will be way better off and get the job done right. After I figure out the trick everything is smooth down the road and the duo Amazon Cloud cam and Kwikset Convert smart lock is a keeper.
Alexa will unlock door with a pin. Don't necessarily need Amazon Key app varies with hub.

This is our 2nd Kwikset lock conversion. The motor was defective in the first and somehow not what we wanted so we tried this version at half the price. This lock works remotely only with the later and more powerful versions of Echo (we have an Echo Dot.) The app required depends on the hub used to connect. If Alexa is your hub then you need the Amazon Key app. We purchased a SmartThings hub which means it works with the SmartThings app. Alexa WILL unlock the door on command. However it asks that you choose a pin and then requires you to say the pin in order to unlock the door. At the time of this review the price has more than doubled. I paid $53.53 for the lock and $59 for the hub less than what the lock is listed for.. So far our only caveat is that if the lock is locked manually it still shows as unlocked on the app. We purchased this so that we can let in my elderly mother's aides even if she is asleep. However, since our goal is to encourage activity on her part she walks them to the door and locks it manually. My son is our tech and installation / repair guy and as he used SmartThings at his home and already had the app on his phone it took us a little trial and error to figure out why it worked for him and not others. Remember that you need an app to communicate with the hub not the lock. The hub will communicate with the lock. So read the material that comes with your hub. Hope this helps

I spent 3 hrs on this thing and I am from a IT background. 4 things you need to know! 1. The amazon key version converter DOES work without the cam. You need a hub to connect to the lock, in my case I have a echo plus 2nd generation with the hub. Add amazon key to your Alexa skills follow the instruction of the converter and try discover device on your Alex app on the phone. But you can’t use the amazon KEY app without the cam, so that you miss the features like receiving notifications or giving ppl access. Basically you can control your lock Manually on your phone by pressing a button or ask Alexa to do so. I find it a bit limiting. 2. There is no upside down adapter. The d shape curve should always face up before the installation. There is a step where the key will lock and unlock after installing the battery. So if you forget to install the adapter before this step, you will find the knob reversed 180 degrees. The solution is to take out the battery and redo the test step one more time, thus it is a 360 degrees. I do wish the instruction would be more specific about this misstep and how to correct it. I read the other review about this issue and figured out that since it only took a phone call instead of sending a diff adapter, then it must be something I could do on the conversion kit to make it right. 3. The adapter size is a bit tricky cuz I had to reuse my old plate plus the plate came with the convert to add enough thickness to make sure it fits. I guess It may have to do with the thickness of the door. 4. It is motorized but doesn’t have much torque. make sure there is no resistance locking or unlocking before installation. It is meant for a perfectly aligned zero resistance working lock. Otherwise, the convert will struggle.
A service door makes this great but Amazon has work to do!

We live in San Francisco and have many deliveries from Amazon. There is no safe place for deliveries to be left so UPS, FedEx and USPS commonly have to make second trips if we are out. We are fortunate that we have a main front door entrance and a service door entrance. The service door allows the garbage pickup guys, who have a regular key, to get to our garbage and recycling bins. The doors leading from the service area to the rest of the house are normally locked and alarmed. It was easy to install the camera and lock. The system works well. Deliveries from Amazon's own carrier seems as good as any other and far, far better that the USPS. There is one flaw to the system and that is ONLY ONE ACCOUNT can be served by the lock system. This is really dumb. Jeff Bezos must have taken his stupid pills the day this system was reviewed. OK there is now a second flaw in the system: YOU CAN'T USE IT WITH Amazon's 'SUBSCRIBE AND SAVE' facilities. Subscription purchases make a lot of sense especially if it worked with in-home delivery. I'd buy ALL the brand name household stuff we use this way if it worked. Having boring stuff like toilet rolls and other non-perishable brand name goods delivered in-home every month would be very convenient. I've dinged Amazon a star for failing to get this integration in place. They have work to do. Dinged Amazon ANOTHER star. It seems impossible to figure out whether an order will be delivered In-Home until an order is placed. I ordered a book and a microwave oven. The book will be delivered In-Home but not the oven! Both are being fulfilled by Amazon.com Services, Inc. It makes no sense whatever.
