Merrell Moab 2 GTX Men's Shoes

When I'd had the MOAB 2 GTX (Beluga) for just a few days, I carefully rinsed some sand off the top of the toe of these shoes, making sure not to let any water go into the top opening. I reached inside afterward to make sure they were still dry, and the inside of the entire toe was damp. You can only return the shoes in "new" condition, and once you find out that they are not waterproof, they are not in new condition. I've owned other Goretex products and none of them let water through this easily. Now that I've had them for a month, and used them on a few hikes, I'd say that they're waterproof in unrealistic, ideal conditions, but otherwise very water resistant. If I carefully stand in the bathtub with them briefly, they don't let water in. But if water hits them with any velocity at all (like in the *light* rinsing example above, or if you were to kick a puddle), water starts to get in. If you want something to keep your feet dry while walking in wet grass or light rain, these will do the trick, but if you want to actually be able to walk through a puddle and come out with dry socks, maybe try something else.
