Mostly About Installation
By SCOTT V CASTLE on Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2018
I should have come on here much sooner than now for an update. But I can honestly say this is now a 5 star. I've saved so much money since switching and I haven't had any issues. Performance wise this works great👍. I just installed this today, so this isn't so much based on performance as much as the installation process. I had read the reviews prior to buying this and I could tell I might be in for a hard time. I can tell you that for the few hours it's been running, it works excellent and I like everything about it. But you shouldn't trust a review based on so little time. So let's say, assuming there are no future problems, for the $$, I thinks it's remarkable. Also, the app set up is so smooth and easy you'll have everything you need ready in minutes. The biggest concern you'll have with set up is whether or not you have the "C" wire. If you do not, there is a relatively simple solution. You'll have to get into your furnace though so it's going to take a bit more of your time. And your patience. Can't stress that enough. Honeywell provides you with an extra wire so I assume there are many people who will run into this problem if you have an older house/condo. The thermostat itself doesn't require the extra wire, but your furnace will. I'm not the most handiest of men, but I figured it out pretty quickly. I could take a few minutes explaining what goes where and how, but the best thing to do is to go onto YouTube and type in "smart thermostat no C wire". There are a few people who will walk you through it, but even Honeywell themselves have a video for this (that's what I used). The narrator talks a bit slow (remember, patience) but I found it to be real simple as she explained it. The other problem I had was with the WiFi connection. I kept getting an error that it wasn't connecting. I don't have a sure-fire solution to this but I had to reset the thermostat two times and on the third try, it made the connection. This lasted about a 1/2 hour trying to figure out why it wasn't connecting. Still don't know exactly why it was so difficult, but in the end with persistence (and luck?) it's now working. If I do have problems with the performance I will come back here to let people know. Because for everything it does (geofencing!), and the ease of use of the app, it seems like a no-brainer to get it for the price. And if the performance is good for a while, I'm going to change the rating to 5 stars.

Unit died in 9 months, Wifi setup very odd, really bad support
By Michael T Robinson on Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2021
First, I was struck by how very strange the wifi setup was, where you have to go to the router and turn off your home wifi, and create a wifi specially just for the unit itself, then let it find that wifi, I mean, I am a technical person, it's what I do for a living, computer stuff, I've seen all sorts of strange things, and this was really odd. It certainly not the turnkey experience the average user would expect. I've been doing electronics as a hobby for many years, I've put together computers and 3D printers. So having said that, the T5 was difficult to wire up, no intelligent wiring like some other smart thermostats, the online intelligent tech support gave up when I told it what wires I had, even though when I read how to install manually on third party sites I didn't see issues. Couldn't get a Honeywell support person who could help me either, very much a disappointment there. Honeywell support seems almost nonexistent or at least heavily overtaxed to the point that they cannot support the user base. But a little online reading on independent forums, connected a few wires, and I was there. And it hooked up to the app fine, and ran fine for nine months, from October 2020 to July 2021. Then one hot summer day out of nowhere we notice the heater has suddenly started up full blast! I went to check the T5. It had no display and appeared to be not working. I pulled the Honeywell T5 off the wall and checked the wires, no shorts or crossed wires. Turned the entire hvac system off, put the T5 unit back on the wall, turned it all back on, same issue. Tried hitting reset on the hvac units and again, the T5, no display, no wakeup from touch screen, unit was dead. As far as I can tell the T5 is, with no warning, no error messages, just completely bricked. So I disconnected it and hooked my old non smart thermostat I had (luckily) saved (just in case) back up and everything went back to normal. Super frustrating. Ugh. And I've been told by an HVAC person that all of their customers with Honeywell smart units report that the Honeywell smart thermostat customer support is a nightmare; I've dealt with nightmare support enough in the past, I will not in the future. I guess the giant corporation Honeywell got my money, and that's their main concern- that first time new purchase. Well, from me it's goodbye forever Honeywell. I've heard good things about other smart units, I will look into one of those instead. I feel like I've wasted a hard-earned $115+ dollars on this smart thermostat and it's really frustrating.
