Have a desktop that goes down just because of a little blip in the power supply? This is great.

The biggest nuisance in a power outage is your router for the internet goes down. The fiber optic with FIOS keeps on working, they even have a built in battery for the main terminal. The router runs off of a coax to the main terminal, and that is what goes down. So having a low profile battery backup on that piece of equipment can make all of the difference. It has 6 outlets for both surge protection, and battery backup, and another 3 outlets for surge only. That way if you have a heavy duty eat up a lot of juice device that doesn't need to be running in an outage, for example a printer, or second monitor, you can plug them in there. The other great thing is that the USB connected smart feature is that you can program the software that runs it to shut down your PC for example, and conserve power for your internet. If you have a switch or switches that expand your hard wired home connections, as was mentioned there are plenty of plugs for that. There are also two USB outlets so you can charge up your cell phone etc. as well. I have had several APC battery backup UPS boxes over the years and have found them to be reliable. I have some of their 1500 models. I really like having them on my desktop and entertainment system. Electricity is not really all that stable, and sometimes there is a dip in power commonly referred to as brown outs. Your sensitive electronic equipment doesn't really like pulses, or dips. They do make more expensive units that are specially designed to smooth out the voltage, but even one at this level avoids that nasty forced shut down of a desktop computer. You come back and the computer is off, and when rebooting it mentions that an unexpected shutdown occurred and do you want to boot in safe mode, or standard boot up. I use my Win 7 PC for entertainment recording my favorite shows with free OTA signals hooked up to a new powered antenna. When the computer goes down just because of a blip in the power I miss my favorite shows until I discover that, and reboot. So this device saves me a lot of aggravation. With a laptop having a built in battery of course that is not a problem. Overall highly recommended.

If I wanted surge protection with no battery I would have bought a cheapo power strip

I did power consumption estimations for my computer and modem and made sure that this battery could handle it at max load and allow me two to five minutes to safely shut down my computer at least. That's all I ask, I have no grandiose dreams of running the computer for long in a complete power outage. We had a very momentary spell of lights flickering on 4/29. I heard a loud POP from the unit and it started emitting the ear destroying, very loud, high pitched tone which would normally mean that the unit is on battery power - but my computer and everything else connected to the UPS (battery and surge only side) were completely dead the instant the lights flickered the first time. I never saw the light turn or amber as the manual says is possible - the light was out and I could not turn anything back on. I muted the UPS, turned it off, unplugged everything, and tried to power it on again. The green light no longer stays solid, it blinks green for a handful of moments and then turns off emitting the very loud tone until I mute it. I looked at the documentation for the unit and the tone with light off means that it is currently overloaded (but there is no longer anything plugged into it!) - the instructions say to power down, unplug, disconnect the battery positive for a minute, reconnect battery, and plug things in one by one but even with nothing plugged in the same blinking and then dead behavior is seen. Power flows through the surge only side but the battery outlets no longer have power through them at all. Very disappointed in all of this. I looked at reviews beforehand but I thought I would give this product the benefit of the doubt. The item is not eligible for returns through Amazon but I am in contact for a refund and if I pursue something like this again it will have to be from a brick and mortar store where I can (hopefully) truly return a crap unit.
