It Really Is Necessary to Take a Supplement
By Sri Ananda Sarvasri on Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2018
We tried to get all our nutrition from foods. We bought the best quality organic foods we could afford and all our meals were home-cooked. I have lived this way for decades. Yet, I could feel my health slipping over the years. Recently, I began to do research into the quality of our soils and current agricultural practices, both conventional and organic. I began testing all the produce we brought home with a Brix refractometer. What I discovered was shocking. Practically all the foods on the market, including organic foods, are mostly junk, with very few exceptions. This is because of our agricultural practices – we do not amend the soil with minerals that have been removed through cropping. Take out 70 minerals and put in three (NPK), and do that for 100 years and you have some idea of the pitiful condition of our current agricultural soils worldwide. Ever since the so-called "green revolution" which was really our conversion to chemical agriculture, all of the soils that have been farmed this way have become mineral depleted. Organic crop production is no better, because they also do not amend the soil with a balanced ratio of minerals, and they also grow crops with excess nitrogen and potassium that just makes big crops that are watery and mineral depleted. My conclusion was that it is currently impossible to get all of our vitamins and minerals we need from food, even organic food. I tried taking these supplements along with my wife and we both noticed significant improvements in our health within 3 to 4 days. We noticed that we healed faster from bug bites and minor scratches (from gardening), our skin improved substantially, and cognitively, our memory was better and faster. I still don't believe we can get all the nutrition we need from supplements. There are too many nutritional factors that cannot be put into a pill. But until we change our agricultural practices, supplementation is a necessity. Even this rather complete multi-mineral, multi-vitamin supplement is not sufficient. We need to add a calcium-magnesium supplement, because no company adds sufficient calcium and magnesium to their multi-vitamin-mineral products. It would make the pill too big. So we need to add a separate calcium-magnesium supplement. The ultimate solution is biological agriculture, sometimes referred to as bionutrient agriculture or eco-agriculture. This form of agriculture replaces minerals in the ideal ratio. It is non-toxic to soil life. With this mineral-balancing agriculture it is possible to grow abundant, very high nutrient-dense foods, at much lower cost than either chemical or organic agriculture. Pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides become unnecessary. Properly mineralized crops develop a powerful immune system. I believe the destruction of our soils and the reduced mineral content of our foods combined with processed junk foods is responsible for the epidemic levels of degenerative disease we see today, including mental illness and cognitive decline. I thought it was enough to live a non-toxic lifestyle, eat right, eat organic, exercise moderately, and that would be enough. I even wrote a book on natural healthcare (Extraordinary Healthcare). But it is not enough. Until we restore our soils, we need to focus on getting the fundamental minerals (the basic elements on the periodic chart that we need) in the right proportions. For us, this supplement was a good choice.

WARNING: ACCIDENTAL SELF-POISONING RISK AT DAILY INTAKE LEVELS SUGGESTED BY LABEL!!
By AJ on Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2021
I’m vegan with a sensitive stomach and this vitamin got good reviews. I’ve had a tendency towards low levels and even deficiencies with my B-vitamins. I eat well enough I don’t need a multi-vitamin *every* day, and this fact alone probably saved me from a much worse situation with this “daily” multivitamin (that should *not* be taken daily). I’m a student with a 4.0 (human bio/pre-med) with ADHD; I know my stuff but sometimes when it comes to taking care of myself I get distracted and overlook something. Hence, I checked the reviews but did not do more than a passing glance at the label. I am regretting this deeply at the moment. I started taking these Deva Nutrition multivitamins every other day (see left label in photo). Every third day, I’d suck it up and take my old Nature’s Bounty B-complex (label is right in my photo) even though it upset my stomach. I’d been taking the Nature’s Bounty B-complex for years with the only issue being that I avoided it sometimes due to the stomach upset, so I was always at risk of low cyanocobalamin (B-12). I’d purchased these Deva multivitamins to get out of taking Zofran with my much needed B-vitamins, at least not all the time. I started taking this regimen a little over a month ago. About three and a half weeks ago, I started having worse peripheral neuropathy than normal. I wrote it off because I have another issue, so I thought it was that.About two weeks into this regime, I started to have problems focusing in my classes more than usual. I began to have difficulty concentrating and reading more than a couple paragraphs at a time from my textbooks—- or even pleasure reading— became extremely challenging. Even when I could get through them, I immediately forgot what I read. A week ago, I got at C on a quiz— my first quiz grade below a B+ all year. I started to call to make appointments or pay bills and then forget to call, or forget what I’d called about the moment anyone picked up the phone. I started to forget to finish my sentences and also forget what I’d even been talking about before I stopped mid-word. It took me days to get through all the steps just to do laundry... and then I accidentally left my clothes in the washer and the molded and had to be thrown out. I was starting to get excessively anxious and agitated, too. I felt like I was bad at life and last week had moments of suicidal ideation (which is not normal for me at all despite some history with depression). Midweek last week, I started to hear the phone ringing and people calling my name when they were not. It progressed to people who were not there saying short sentences to me. I really thought I was loosing it and was afraid to go to the doctor because I am in the middle of an evaluation for a rare neurological disease (that does not have any of these for symptoms other than the neuropathy), and I didn’t want my (new-ish) neurologist to write off lifelong neurological pain symptoms to what seemed like a sudden onset mental health or cognitive issue. I was worried he’d dismiss my real problems as a psych issue. I decided not to tell anyone, which could have really hurt me long term. My neurologist, however, had just happened to order B6 labs— just as a matter of routine testing. It was discovered my blood levels of pyridoxine (B-6) were 3x the safe upper limit; they’d been in the mid-range of normal, safe levels two months before. It was easy to identify what was doing it. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for people my age and gender is 1.3mg of B-6 per day. My old Nature’s Bounty B complex that I was taking had 5mg, but I was only taking it about once a week, so it was unlikely to be the culprit... especially since I’d been taking it more frequently before and my B-6 blood levels were normal. The Deva “Daily” Multi-vitamins had 12.75mg.... 11.45mg more than I need each day. It was clear to myself and my doctors that they cause the B6 toxicity. I just was very lucky that I hadn’t taken it daily like it said on the bottle or I’d have gotten poisoned with double the dose of excess B6. My routine labs also came back with (thankfully low-ish) levels of arsenic that were not present before I started taking this supplement. This connection is less clear but I don’t engage in activities that would have exposed me to arsenic. I also live in an area that has some of the purest tap water in the US. If it’s not the Deva Vitamins, it’s hard to imagine where it’s coming from. Anyway, this whole thing was really a challenge to write and I feel really stupid even having to write it knowing what I do in this area..... if I had checked I would have known that these might not be safe. I’m writing this hoping someone else won’t make the same mistake as me. Yes, they won’t bother your stomach but an upset stomach is a small price to pay for not getting auditory hallucinations, agitation, and dementia-like symptoms. I just really hope this all goes away and I don’t suffer long term neurological injury from this. I really got lucky that this was discovered when the toxicity was still relatively acute. The scary thing is that this could have gone on for a long time without me knowing what was going on if my neurologist, just by chance and force of habit, hadn’t decided to test my b-6 blood levels. I was too far gone to recognize it even with a lot of education in human biology and nutrition, and a previous background as a medical assistant. The hot flushes and burning in my limbs didn’t catch my attention, and my attention itself had started to fade too much to notice I went from having no memory of my dreams to extremely vivid lucid dreaming that I remembered upon awakening. (I also didn’t make the connection to potential increases in vitamin B-6 levels to the dreaming, something I would have normally done nearly instantly if my mind didn’t work like a bowl of mush). I’m writing this review hoping to prevent others from taking this and making this mistake. Also, if you are having any of these symptoms I had on this supplement (if they’re new or getting worse) or if you’re having trouble with balance or running into things more often, having new/more heartburn, or seem sensitive to light, this may be a sign you’re getting too much B-6 from this supplement. BE CAREFUL! Thankfully, the auditory hallucinations have stopped two days after taking this supplement (and a lot of water and no-impact aerobic exercise later) but my memory and concentration are still shot. I’m still an anxious mess and recently found out literally can’t have anything with even the slightest bit of caffeine anymore (something I do with ADHD to help me focus) it it or it sends me right over the edge with agitation, anxiety, and poor concentration because these medications have put my neurology on the fritz. I also have been apparently just about bleeding money since I started taking these since it turns out I was forgetting what I’d already spent each day. NOT WORTH IT! I regret having to give these even one star.
