It just works, and I really like this thing.
By T.J. on Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2017
It just plain works, and No Wiring Required. Between the wink hub, the Wemo lighting, and all the other supposed "Smarthome" things I've either tried or have now, this low tech switch is the Smartest. I set up the switch sitting in my living room easy chair. I set the switch on the coffee table. I downloaded the app. Then It took 30 seconds to set up, another minute to set up timers, 5 seconds to walk to the kitchen and stick it on the light switch, and it just plain works. (I didn't have to spend an hour or two setting it up while pulling my hair out and calling support to get it done) Power went out yesterday afternoon while I was at work. When I got home, the power had been restored and as the country song goes... every light in the house was on with the exception of this nice little Smart Switch. All the other supposed Smarthome stuff defaults to "ON" at 100% even though it might be the middle of the day when you're not home. But this little switch is battery powered and does not rely on an internet connection. This switch did not turn my Kitchen lights on when the power came back on like the others defaulted to, but it did turn the kitchen lights on when it was supposed to.... by the timer that was set. If you want it on you can either use a timer, use your phone or tablet to turn it on, use the Bluetooth arrival feature that turns it on when Bluetooth connects, or just touch the switch when you walk into the room. It's so simple it's Smart ! LOL.... who knew things could be so easy? Now I feel sorta dumb for buying the other Smarthome junk when all I needed was this. I'll be buying more of these and replacing the unreliable hubs and switches I now have. It's true that you cannot operate the switch from a remote location over the internet, but when I think about the other stuff I have, I never really need to. I've done it to see if I can but never needed to. The only time I've used a remote function was to turn all the lights back off after a power outage when they all defaulted to on. I've read on the switch, ate website they're working on a product that will allow remote functions over the net so I suppose the capability will be available in the near future. Here are my Pros:No Wiring Required. No internet required so you can use it in places where there is no internet. No Nuetral Wire Required so it works on older homes.1 second installation after you insert the batteries. Just sit it on the switch and it magnetically holds itself on.Easiest and quickest setup of any Smarthome product I've seen.Does not default to on after a power outage because it's battery powered.Plenty of options on how you want it to work.Simple operation. So simple it makes me feel smart for buying it.If you want to move it to another location it takes 1 second to pull it off and 1 second the slap it on another switch. No new setup required even if you moved into another home or apartment. My Cons:(My Cons aren't biggies to me.)It seems you can only have one device at a time connected by Bluetooth to operate the switch using the app. If you use 2 phones only 1 will be connected. No big deal at all if you're mainly using the timer function for operation. If small noises bother you then operation is a con for you. There's a little noise when the switch operates.Bluetooth range is limiting if you're using a phone to operate the switch. Again once I set up the timer I'd rarely want to use the phone for operation of the switch, so no big deal for me.No remote function over the internet. No big deal for me as I'd rarely or never need to. It seems that the Switchmate people are working on a product to resolve a remote function using a Bluetooth hub. That will may resolve being able to use more than one device at a time? All in all, I'm extremely happy with this Smart Switch. I would recommend this switch to anyone that wants a quick, simple way to Smart up their home lighting. Extremely easy and requires no internet connection to work. If you're looking for a switch that's got a lot of functions like operating from the other side of the world then look elsewhere for now. This switch Just Works as long as you understand it's limitations. Bluetooth connectivity normally isn't going to work at a hundred feet or more. It's more like 30-40 feet.

Nice idea but not recommended
By Kindle Customer on Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2020
The Good: Installation is as easy as just letting it snap onto the switch. The interface with my wall switches felt solid and the design not all that intrusive, and the casings felt sturdy enough to take a bit of a beating. I was looking forward to using these and the cost was low enough to make me willing to give them a try having read a nice review elsewhere. The products arrived in intact original packaging in normal shipping boxes, with no visible damage. The Bad: I never really got to use them - both units I purchased never really worked. As soon as batteries were in, I'd often start hearing them make a regular clicking noise, with even the manual button on the front of the unit not working. Worse than that, only one ever managed to remotely come close to talking to their own app; it immediately informed me it needed to do a firmware update to the switch to update it... which failed after a fair amount of time had passed (hanging out near a wall switch for several minutes isn't exactly my idea of fun) and then steadfastly refused to communicate with any phone over bluetooth (having tried three of them). Most well-designed devices with onboard firmware usually have an option to recover to either a safe mode or the last working firmware; not so with these. That clicking noise by the way? I took them apart and found the bar that it raises and lowers to throw the wall switch was continuing to be driven by the motor engage even though it was definitely pressing against the sensor that should have stopped said motor. So all these things were doing were futilely trying to enforce the power state, ignoring the button, and in the process draining the batteries and likely driving the motor to eventual death. If your devicce does develop the "click of death", I did find I had a little success in reviving them temporarily -- but you have to get into the device and give the bar a but of a push or pull, varying amounts of strength involved. This would usually get me a few throws of the switch via the manual frontplate button, and then go back to the click of death. And since neither would communicate over bluetooth, there wasn't much point in even bothering with constantly fixing them.I could have fought to get my money back, but since I had already taken my units apart to try to diagnose the clicking sound -- and the fact that 0 of the 2 ever worked -- I decided it wasn't worth the time to get my money back. I do hope the manufacturer can use it to further improve the product. Not tested: Any sort of home automation integration outside of the Switchmate app itself.Summary: It's a nice idea and definitely attractive for people who lack the willpower/knowledge to take on swapping out electric switches (or in housing that may even prohibit that), but it's execution leaves a lot to be desired.
