Good two-way radios for hiking, privacy mode comes in handy

We had two pink Motorola two-way radios, older or simpler generation, and needed at least one more. These are better for two reasons - they come with a rechargeable battery pack so they can be charged when they run low (even in the car with the right USB cord) and they have privacy modes. The privacy mode comes in handy when hiking in popular areas where other people would otherwise end up on the same frequency as you. They also still pair with the two older pink ones as long as the privacy code is set to zero. The range is average and varies with the terrain, but these are essential when hiking in remote areas without cell reception. We last used them to coordinate pickup at Lassen NP where there was no data connection.

Entry level radios, slightly overpriced for reduced value

These are an excellent solution to much smaller problems. I think the stats given by motorola are a bit of a stretch. I used these for a two car backcountry trip and despite the vehicles being one ahead of the other, we encountered audio issues frequently (hard to understand what was coming out of the radio). I've since returned these and upgraded to Motorola T801 and they work much better.
