After years of pulling my rumpled, sometimes stained or ripped sketchbook out of my bag, I decided enough was enough. As an illustrator, my sketchbook goes everywhere with me, and taking it in and out of my bag all the time takes a toll. I'd seen these types of portfolios be used by fancy business people to keep their fancy business documents nice, so I figured what the heck? What's the difference between a sketchbook and a coil-bound shareholder report? I was actually really worried initially that there wouldn't be a side-loading inner pocket. The product specs boast that the top-loading inner pocket can hold any size of notebook, but as much as I looked I couldn't get a square answer as to whether there even WAS a place to insert a notebook bound on the long side instead of the short. I took a leap of faith and ordered it anyway, since I liked the zipper and the simple but effective pocket layout. It turns out that you absolutely CAN fit a long-edge-bound notebook in this, and that it actually works quite well! My sketchbook fit perfectly and it stays secure, not moving around or getting stuck. When I took it on an international trip, it managed to survive three weeks of travel and being haplessly shoved into my backpack without so much as a scratch, a pulled zipper, or a broken seam. It was a huge relief to know that my sketchbook was protected. I would also recommend this product if you have a sketchbook because the pockets are excellent for holding art supplies! It's really nice being able to just pull out my portfolio and start working instead of having to hunt down a pencil or dig through my case for an eraser or replacement lead. It also made drawing in small contained spaces like airplanes a little more convenient, since all of my supplies were in easily accessible pockets and not (where they usually are) tucked into my hair, my pockets, or falling between the seats. I also use the business card slots to hold my own business cards, as well as any cards from artists I meet out in the world. Overall, I've been very pleased with this product! I had mixed expectations going in, but I am very glad I bought this. I would highly recommend this product to other artists of all kinds of you use a pencil and paper at all, and even if not, there's a pocket for your iPad. :)
