This is the most wonderful vacuum I have ever used
By Chloe Fritz on Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2016
This is the most wonderful vacuum I have ever used. When I first moved out of my parent's house, I was given a hand-me-down Hoover that had seen better days. When I decided to buy a sweeper I got a Shark Rotator XL and it was almost as bad as my ancient Hoover. My grandpa bought me the Dyson for an engagement gift, and I can't say enough good things about it. The amount of dirt and hair that it picked up out of our rugs and carpet that the other sweeper left behind was scary. My carpet and rugs actually feel cleaner and softer after I'm done running the Dyson. It works great on hard wood floors too, which is primarily what we have in the house. I have two cats and a large dog and this sweeper picks up hair easily, even the hair that gathers right along the edge of the wall (the Shark did not, you had to use the attachment hose). The Dyson isn't super quiet, but it's not really a negative for me. I've definitely used noisier vacuums but I have used quieter ones as well. The people at Dyson made the vacuum smaller and more streamlined by storing the attachment hose in the handle, which is nice because it's not in your way, but it's not super easy to get out and put back in; however that wouldn't deter me from buying the Dyson, I think I just need more time to get used to it. If the price scares you, just know that there is a reason this vacuum is so expensive! It's worth it! My grandma still has the very first Dyson they ever released and my mom still has her second generation. Both still work as well as the day they got them.

1 star is generous

I previously owned a shark but thought I should try a Dyson because of its supposed superior design. There is almost nothing about it that I like. My shark actually vacuumed my home and left it clean and free of dog hair. The Dyson fails on almost every level. The worst part is the attachment. The hose itself takes a lot of effort to maneuver, but more than that, the design of the dust brush is such that the length of the bristles creates too much space, making the suction power incapable of suctioning up all the hair or dust. The vacuum is very hard to put in an upright position. You never know if it's locked or will fall down. When vacuuming a hardwood floor, it won't even suck up leaves. It sucks up *only* what you can position directly beneath it. Otherwise, it pushes and blows leaves around the house. Not very helpful. There are also area rugs that it cannot vacuum at all. It starts to suction and then overloads. I either have to get rid of the vacuum or the rug. The weight of the vacuum is so much heavier than most, which would be fine if it were better than other vacuums, but it's not. Also, it's very messy to empty. The design of the filter is good, very little gets stuck, but you do have to pull it out and unscrew the top almost every time and I can never get it to empty without dust scattering. Huge waste of money.
