R72s are being sold with a known defect
By Kjbartol on Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2016
I am writing this review immediately after assembly of the bike, so possibly I'll come back and change the rating after having spent some time actually using it. But the bike comes with a design/fabrication defect, which Sole is well aware of, and it's frustrating to pay this kind of money for something that doesn't work as advertised right out of the box. I paid for a professional to come and assemble the bike. He spent a good bit of extra time trying to locate the power switch. (The power switch is referred to repeatedly in the owner's manual and installation instructions, but with no indication of where the switch is.) Finally, after several hours and two calls to the Sole service number (and long after the assembler had come and gone), this is what I figured out. The R72 doesn't have a power switch. The R92 has a power switch and the R72 owner's manual is apparently a badly-edited version of the R92 manual. Moreover (according to a yellow flyer included in the packing materials), if you have the R72, chances are good that your machine inadvertently left the factory in an in-store "display mode" of operation. This means that the console constantly remains in display mode (i.e., all lit up) unless you "turn off the power switch." Since, however, there is no power switch, you need to press and hold a jury-rigged combination of buttons in order to change the setting to Off. If you're lucky, the lit-up display will turn off (i.e., go black) 30 - 45 minutes later. (This is not a joke.) The Sole service technician advised that, unfortunately, in many cases, they have found that the display really will not turn off in 30 to 45 minutes (this was my situation), in which case the display console must be disassembled and returned to Sole for a new one. The alternative is to plug and unplug the electrical cord each time the machine is used. However, the service technician reports that this effectively reboots the machine so that any information that may have been programmed into the machine is lost. There is no excuse for Sole to be shipping these machines with this known defect, expecting that most people will - like me - accept the defect rather than bother with returning and replacing the display console.
