Bye Bye Scam Callers!
By Wendy on Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2014
I love this call blocker and can whole-heartedly recommend it. My only caveat is to read all the information in the questions section and on the CPR website to see if (and how) it will work with your phone set up before you buy. The customer support is pretty proactive - I haven't had to call for anything because the guide that came with the phone and the online information covered everything really thoroughly. Most of the people who are disappointed with the product seem to have compatibility issues. I decided to buy a call blocker after I tried to tell a scam caller to take me off their phone list and he began making a series of (rather hilarious) death threats against my husband. When I reported the call to the phone company (after filing a complaint with the police), the operator at Verizon's Harassing Call division basically advised me to buy a call blocker. My only other option was to pay a monthly fee for the ability to block only a few callers. I researched the options and this one looked the best. I have Verizon DSL landline with Caller ID on an older VTech wireless phone system. When the device arrived, it took about a minute to set up. The only confusion was that you have to plug in to Line 2 on the back of the blocker. My instinct would have been to go for Line 1, but the user guide set me straight. I was able to set mine up in the serial format. I then manually programmed in the 11 numbers that had been calling me incessantly (copied them off my caller ID). Within 24 hours, the blocker blocked 3 calls. It's been a couple of weeks, and none of the scammers that were harassing me have been able to ring through. Sweet quiet! The blocker has a couple of what I would call quirks, rather than problems (hence my 5 star rating). First, the blocker causes every call that rings through to my phone to show up twice on my caller ID. I read some advice on the CPR website that said adding a DSL filter to my line might help, so I did, but the double caller id still happens. You know what? Totally don't care!! The doubled caller ID doesn't bother me at all if it means no scammers calling me 6-10 times a day. The other quirk is that if I am talking on one line and a scammer calls on the other line, it doesn't seem to block the second call. It only happened once, so I'm not even 100% sure that it was a caller on my blocked list. Again, if that is the case, I'll do what I do with all numbers I don't recognize: don't answer and then check out the number on www.800notes.com later. If it's a reported scam caller (or political caller), I can block them manually. Things I really like about this call blocker: - I can block 1000 numbers (not including the 200 pre-loaded into the device) - I can manually block a number during a call by pressing #2 and hanging up. Sometimes I even tell the caller I'm blocking them, which I enjoy. I would like it even more if there was a sound effect, like a toilet flushing! CPR: think about adding this for your next version! - If I don't want to bother answering a call from a questionable number, I can let it ring through and block it later from the handset by pressing **7# and adding the number. - the ability to do things from the handset is key for me, as my single phone jack is no where near the living room where we answer the phone most often. - I can check the device to see how many calls have been blocked from each number to date. In my case, the forerunner (by a WIDE margin) is the "Microsoft Windows Virus" scam callers who have been blocked 9 times so far. Persistent little buggers, aren't they? - I do not hear any ring at all when the blocked numbers call. The CPR blocker heads them off at the pass. For the first time in months, the only calls that come through are actual friends and business calls. If this device works with your phone system and set up, buy it. It was going to cost me $60 a year to block up to 30 numbers on my phone service. For just a little more, I pay once and can block 1000 calls. Thank you, CPR.

Does not work on Time Warner and they already know it
By Geno on Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2014
I should have looked at the reviews more closely. The 1, 2, and 3 star ratings are very correct and even A LOT of the 4 and 5 star ratings mention A LOT of quirks. I received this unit 2 days ago and was excited about getting rid of the telemarketers like anyone would be. Hooked it up and could not use the program tones, caller id was lost, and every call that came in said missed call on my handsets as it was ringing. I called Kevin at CPR the next morning and he was well aware of the problem. He was very nice and said he would send me an email of some things to try to make it work. If those solutions failed I could send them the unit back and they would send me a new V202 that would fix this problem. The V202 is already out but everyone is trying to sell all the old 201's first. It's been over 24 hours and no email yet. It was very disappointing to find out that the product description led to buy something that was not going to work for me like it said it would. The proof - this problem was supposedly "fixed" in the V201 that just came out last Dec 2013. Here we are about 6 months later and it is supposed to be "fixed" again in the V202. This didn't set well with me that I had wasted all of this time on researching and buying something that was never going to work for my type of phone system. Why not just be honest with us? I understand parallel hookup may fix the caller id, but the feature on my Panasonic Dect 6.0 PLUS to block callers from the handset would be lost and I would have to run to the blocker every time to use it or program it later, which involves changing the wiring every time. I don't need a lecture on how to use the unit and am doing something wrong either. When I tried this unit there were no other machines or phones hooked to this line AT ALL. My phone system is about a year old and it is DECT 6.0 PLUS. My building is only 15 years old, Time Warner installed the phone last fall so it is not very old. The cable modem is about 30 feet from the hookup where it enters the building. This is also a business I own so it is Business Class service. There is also A LOT of talk about our crappy US caller id, phone system, etc. I am well over 50 and haven't seen any problems in my lifetime from other equipment I have used whether it be phones, faxes or even my other business machines. I have owned many brands of phones and if they had a limited call block feature and caller id they have always worked. My Time Warner phone system I have now works great but doesn't block enough numbers and EVERY feature still works. In addition, my Panasonic DECT 6.0 PLUS blocks about 30 more on top of that and EVERY feature still works. The problem doesn't seem to me that it is our phone system although it may be different from the UK phone system. I personally think it is CPR's ability to make something that works right out of the box for US customers because all of my other equipment works fine. Also, NONE of my other equipment is made in the US (real shocker there huh) and whatever other countries are producing them must know how to make them work with the US phone system without problems. Spending this kind of money and having to constantly change the wiring to make it work and someone telling me that is normal is actually quite insane! Plain and simple truth is that most other units have a caller id built in so you can simply tag the number later and hit block. This design is much easier to use, and these other units (which have their share of neg reviews also) are less than half the price. I bought this one because it had the least neg reviews, but had I looked at the 4 and 5 star reviews to see the quirks mentioned, I would not have bought it. Jumping through hoops, loosing features that were advertised and constantly changing wiring DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT WORKS! There is also A LOT of talk about how we are all stupid and we are not hooking it up correctly, or how we are at fault because we simply don't understand that we have to hook it up ONE WAY (parallel) to get the caller id to work, THEN hook it up a DIFFERENT WAY (series) to program it, THEN hook it back up like IT WAS (parallel) to be able to use this thing. We also have to do this EVERY SINGLE TIME for the rest of our lives to block a number that we missed because we weren't close enough to the button, or we were on the phone with another caller, or we weren't there at the time?! Talk about work! I would almost say that it's less hassle to deal with the telemarketers but I would be lying. I just need a better call blocker. I am in no way trying to be mean or hateful, just completely honest. Most of us have a million things to do in our lives and we don't have a lot of time to waste. It would definitely be BEST to call CPR BEFORE you buy this unit or if you want a unit much simpler to use shop around here on Amazon because there are others that do it through simply scrolling through a caller id list and hit block and do 1500 numbers for less than half the price of this one. They have their quirks also so it seems like the perfect call blocker has yet to be built. It may not work for me either but I will be calling them BEFORE I buy the next one. I hardly ever do reviews like this but I did this in hope that I can help someone else avoid wasting the time and frustration that I have had. No bad feelings, just looking for something to get rid of all those telemarketers like everyone else.
