Low cost probe into Atmos - Awesome!
By Kreetn on Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2016
So far, very pleased! Wanted Atmos in 5.1.4 configuration. Purchased Yamaha a2050 Yamaha RX-A2050 9.2-Channel MusicCast AV Receiver with Built-In Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (Black)for 5.1.4 sound. Used two sets of these bookshelves, the matching center Pioneer SP-C22 Andrew Jones Designed Center Channel Speakerand the matching sub Pioneer SW-8MK2 Andrew Jones Designed 100-Watt Powered Subwoofer for my bedroom. Used 16g speaker wire (and it takes a lot for 9 channels of sound!). A couple of notes to setting up an Atmos system, specifically with the A/V receiver mentioned. Letting the receiver set all of the speaker settings is good and bad. Good because it does an excellent job figuring out where everything is and what is in use - Yamaha's YPAO system. Bad because it has no idea what crossover points to set - it thought these speakers were "large" (which turns off the sub and over-drives the low end of the speaker which is only good down to about 50hz, not 30hz) and it set the Atmos (presence) speakers at 110hz crossover which is too low also. Pioneer recommends to set the speakers to "small" and set the crossover point at 80hz for the main channels, but I chose 60hz instead (risky, but they are rated for 50hz. They (either pioneer or Dolby, can't remember which) recommend 150hz for the Atmos speakers, but while the receiver allows a number of settings, it only gives a spread of 120hz or 160hz for the presences speakers around the 150hz range, nothing in between. I found that if I set to 160hz I lost too much presence sound, but putting it down to 120hz really brought the Atmos speakers to life - risky for blowing the speaker maybe but I'll risk it for now, the sound is awesome! I'm still in testing, and ALL of the speakers probably need to "break in" still, but the surround - using the new Dolby Surround (upmixer, and it isn't the old Dolby Surround from years ago) setting on the receiver - is really good. I haven't tested "good" material like the new Star Trek or Avengers movies yet (or take your pick of loud action movies) with my new settings, including Jupiter Ascending (the only Atmos movie I have), but I did watch The Legend of the Guardians Legends of the Guardians and that movie comes ALIVE with the mentioned settings and using Dolby Surround Upmixing (it's the movie I used to dial in the sound actually). It is all manufactured sound so there is a lot of surround... I need to play with a bunch of the other movies now, but the big question of "should I get these speakers for a budget Dolby Atmos system" then the answer is "YES!". I do wish that I could have purchased the Elite bookshelf speakers instead Pioneer Elite SP-EBS73 Dolby Atmos-enabled Andrew Jones Bookshelf Speakers (Pair), especially the towers, but the price difference is prohibitive, especially if you are looking at a 9.2 channel receiver (which is your major upgrade if you want 5.1.4 instead of 5.1.2 Atmos sound). I'll hit the elite speakers, or a whole new setup in the future, but for now, I'm very pleased with this combination. And the room I've set up in is about 17 x 20, hard reflective walls - actually a very poor theater. But I'm really pleased with the overall experience. And I was surprised at the subwoofer - maybe it's the location I have it in, but it is doing a very good job with my small room (I wanted an SVS SVS SB-1000 - 12", 300 Watt DSP Controlled, Sealed Box Subwoofer (Black Ash) ... but that will wait until I have a dedicated room for theater and more money). Well done Pioneer and Yamaha!
