Excellent first Roomba
By 👕 Diz n Dat 👚 on Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2016
Awesome price. Basically a brand new product. Not a scratch or ding on it upon arrival. I've had it about 2 months now and it runs perfect, but you can tell it's had some adventures. The front is a bit scratched up now. Household size is 2 cats and 2 people in a 1,300 sq. ft. apartment, so it picks up a lot of hair. This is the first Roomba I've owned and I can see the value in owning a more expensive unit. Especially in a larger living space. At least once a week it gets lost in a relatively simple cleaning space. I understand when it gets lodged under the fridge and gives up, but when it's literally 2 feet from the charging dock and I click "dock" you'd expect it to dock with ease. Nope. Sometimes it literally goes the other direction and sets out on a brand new quest. From what I read, the smarter ones actually map out the room and even know where to pickup later if it runs low on battery and needs to recharge mid-cleaning. Still, 75% of the time it goes from start to re-docking finish with no issues. It's not the quietest thing to have running around the room, so the scheduling feature was essential to me. So glad I didn't go for the cheapest Roomba that only runs when you manually tell it to. Not only is it convenient to "set it and forget it", but if I had to be there while it was running, its randomnes and noise would get annoying. It would take me far less time (plus cleaner patterns in carpet) to just use a regular vacuume cleaner. Also, the invisible border piece seems to work great. Other than times when the cats attack the blinking green light, it seems to stop the Roomba from entering prohibited areas. Overall, it picks up a ton of hair and dust with no problem. I run it 4 days a week while I'm at work and I recommend emptying the bin often (if not after every cleaning) as it builds up fast. Comes with a cleaning brush that works pretty ok to untangle hair and whatnot from the bristles. Easy to take apart. Probably wouldn't recommend simpler models, but 650 has been great so far and I'll almost definitely get a smarter Roomba when I move into a larger house. This is a great starter Roomba!

It does the job, but it's a pain in the back
By Kat/Seb on Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2017
The Roomba gets the job done. It's fair to start with that. But my God, this is one stupid device straight from the 80's. PROS: - The floors are kept in check and relatively clean. Which admittedly is the most important thing - The timer function works well (it starts when it's supposed to) CONS (brace yourself): - Loud: yes, it's loud asf. Good luck enduring the noise for more than 5 minutes - Inefficient: being that it's 2017, I kind of expected that the Roomba would scan the house once, starting from a predetermined position, learn the layout and use that information to optimize its path. But no, its vacuuming pattern is only a peg above random. The Roomba can turn a corner and look for a way out of a tight spot, but that's as "smart" as it gets. As such, you see the gizmo hitting the same areas over and over and over, while there's a pile of beach sand 3 feet away - Gets stuck all the time: the floors need to be immaculately free of small and medium objects or the Roomba will get stuck. Not a day goes by that the Roomba can't complete a cleaning cycle because it swallowed the sleeve of a sweater, it got tangled up with some cellphone charging cable or it got stuck on a relatively large infant toy. It's a good deal of work having to prepare the house for the Roomba to do its job, which sort of defeats the purpose. At least in part - Systematically fails to find its way back to the base to recharge: this is a twofold problem. First, the Roomba just doesn't seem to have the capacity to find the base all by itself. We've had this for a month or two and I think it saw it dock on its own twice. Second, the base is very light and the Roomba just pushes it around when trying to dock. This results in a pretty stupid - albeit somewhat funny - show in which the Roomba is chasing the base while pushing it around. The base needed to be heavier and sturdier, I believe. We found ways to prop it so that it doesn't slide sideways when the Roomba is coming to dock, but even when that happens, it doesn't always successfully connect, which in turn results on the Roomba endlessly going back and forth trying to hit that sweet spot in which it's actually recharging The Roomba has the potential for convenience and it can get the job done, but for a whooping (and frankly laughable) $300, I can't recommend this product.

Alright here is the deal, I'm 26 years old. A technology fan. A busy body. Always on the go and when I'm having a lazy day at home, the last thing I want to do is vacuum my apartment. I have a dog which is a lab/beagle mix. He sheds pounds of hair. I'm talking tumble weed tuffs of hair rolling across the kitchen from time to time. I ordered this Roomba for the geek factor (who doesn't want a robot vacuum?) but also the fact that it will vacuum more regularly than I do now. I was amazed after the first few days of having it. My home smelled clean. The air didn't feel as thick as it usually does. The pet hair, GONE. I've had my roomba for a month now and it runs daily, I'm a faithful believer in this model. Here are somethings I learned along the way. PET HAIR: Roomba shines in this area. I have relatively low carpet and hardwood floors, it works at picking up junk on both surfaces. This model DOES have a small dirt bin, so do expect to clean it daily. it's not a big deal. A few shakes over the trash and you're done. Surfaces: Roomba has a way of telling the surface it's on, so when it's in my kitchen is slows down, this way stuff isn't shot all over the floor as it's trying to clean like my standard upright does. Furniture: Roomba is small enough to fit under almost all my furniture, I'm amazed at what it finds under there! At times, roomba has gotten stuck under the couch and turned itself off, so I have come home and played a game of hide and seek with this little guy to see where it ended up. Maintenance: With a dog and this running daily, I clean the bin and the filter every day. It takes at most 2 minutes to do and this will ensure you have roomba running at top performance. I've had this machine around a month now and instead of the dirt bin being full, it's now half full. Thats how well it has been finding and removing things these past few weeks. SmartHome: I live in a smart home with thermostats, door locks, lights and appliances connected to the web and location aware. I was excited to know this model is supported by "Thinking Cleaner", a replacement faceplate for Roomba that allows you to control it from your phone over the internet or allow roomba to tie into your existing home automation system, like Vera or SmartThings. This will be a future buy. The feature to vacuum your house when your smartthome realizes every left for the day is a useful feature. Noise: I read reviews saying this device was loud. It really isn't at all. Im trying to think of a good comparison to the noise level, but maybe running water in your sink. around that noise level. Not even close to the noise of a standard vacuum. Downsides: Roomba will turn off if it has an issue like a sticky wheel, or stuck somewhere. Sometimes it will go into "dock" mode when the battery is low (it will try to migrate back to it's station" and it will just cruze around aimlessly until it just powers off in the middle of a room, this doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Finally, you will learn to decorate your house to accommodate this little guy. meaning cables and phone chargers laying on the ground? NOPE. Tossing that dirty workout shirt on the bedroom floor? NOPE. Dog toys laying around? NOPE. It can migrate over and around some cables, but it increases the chance of it getting stuck and turning off. Over all I'm extremely please. I ordered this device "refurbished" and have yet to see an issue. As a 26 year old active male, I'm surprised how excited I am over a vacuum cleaner.

I had a first generation Roomba many years ago. It worked okay, but I wasn't that impressed for the cost. However, the newer models are incredible. I have 2 dogs and several indoor cats. I did some research and chose the 650 model because it was rated for pets. I also purchased a re-manufactured one to save a few dollars. Starting there, no problems with the re-manufactured model. It was clean, no signs of wear, and everything was included in the box. Note: When buying any of these, while it is being shipped to you, make sure you have the correct batteries for the "virtual wall". You will want to use that right away. The instruction manual is not helpful. At all really. You'll do better to watch some YouTube videos regarding how to use the Roomba. I have a large house and it goes from hard wood, to tile, to carpet with no problem. The best feature is that when the battery runs low, it takes itself to its docking station to recharge. I say it's "napping". I haven't used the schedule feature only because I wanted to watch it for a month or so, see what cords or other objects got it it's way so I knew to move them if needed. It did get hung up on a cord, which I've since moved, and no problems since. We are a "tech" house and we have A LOT of cords only one was an issue. I saw a lot of reviews regarding noise. No it is not loud. At all. No more than a dishwasher or washing machine. Obviously, louder on hardwood than carpet, but that's the price of wood floors. It must be emptied after every vacuuming. Takes 2 minutes tops. And that includes cleaning the rollers, which I do about every other session because of the pet hair. Overall, and incredible addition to the house for the same price as most decent vacuums. Well, the Roomba just finished vacuuming the den while I wrote this, hope it helps.

Keep in mind I've had this thing for a day while reading this. I will say to this point I've been very impressed with the device. It does a thorough job cleaning. At times it seems like it is just wondering around cleaning between bumps and turn around but it continues to clean until it covers every single area. It can get in tight spots and will make sharp turns around legs of tables or chairs. It saves u so much time and is a very intelligent device. Just keep in mind that on initial cleaning it will clean longer than normal and be sure to empty the bin every couple days from what I've seen. U can set it to clean once a day at any time of day u want so u can actually schedule it to clean while at work or at night which ever u prefer and always have a clean house. It comes with a virtual wall which is very nice. It can spot clean or clean a room at a touch of a button or like I mentioned be scheduled to clean. So far I love this device and I'm glad I bought the refurbished version as it saved me a lot of money and is in perfect new condition. I would highly recommend this to anyone that is like us and have pets but not much time to vacuum every day. Update after almost a month of owning. So I felt so strongly about this item that I decided to add a little to my earlier review. This is the most amazing thing I think I've ever purchased on amazon in 6 years and thousands of purchases. The thing is when u buy this type of vacuum u think we'll it will keep the house some what clean but won't have a strong enough vacuum to clean thoroughly......Wrong the vacuum is way stronger than I would have ever thought. I'm amazed every time I clean the compartment as to how much she gathers. Don't ask why I call it a her but my wife and I have gotten in the habit of talking about roomba like a person. Anyways I honestly wish I had bought this when I originally thought about it 3 years ago. My house stays clean without any effort just schedule her and your done. Unless for some reason she craps out on me in the near future this was an amazing investment. We live in a ranch style house which makes this perfect for us she cleans every room in the house with exception of the bedrooms with ease. I'm sure she could handle more but we just focus on those areas. Take it from me if your thinking about purchasing this but feel like I did thinking it can't be strong enough or thorough enough think again it's perfect. On a scale of 1 to 10 on just the cleaning I'd give her a 9. She gets almost everything and on occasion I'll notice a spot she missed or that had gotten dirty again quickly with our two dogs roaming. Make the jump it will be very worth it. This is just an honest opinion from a paying customer I'm not a vine member or anything like that I paid in full for this item and would do it again in a sec.

Love this robot. It's my first iRobot purchase ever, and first off, I'd like to note that the refurbished model worked perfectly fine. I think the biggest question I had going into using this product, is how I should use it. First off I was hoping I could just plug the robot in, set the schedule, and forget it. Boy was I wrong. Using a Roomba requires a little finesse and tempering of expectations. First off, I have over 1400+ sq feet to use the roomba, but after testing it, I find the roomba works the best when you quarantine a room and let the roomba work that room for 30-60 minutes depending on the size. But if you're going to use the scheduler and want to set and forget, you really need to remove most clutter from your floor, and do your best to remove any 4 legged chairs out of the way. Every time my roomba hit a chair, it would circle the legs for a few minutes, then moved on to the next leg of the chair which caused it to hang around the chair for over 10 minutes. Not very efficient. But once I cleared the floor of most items and moved my chairs, I was able to have the roomba complete a clean and dock itself for charging after it was done. You also need to make sure 5-10 feet in front of the dock is clear. When the roomba tries to dock, it will randomly move around until it detect the infrared sensor shooting in a straight line out in front of the dock. If there are items in the way between the roomba and the dock, it might cause the roomba to not dock at all which can be frustrating. This roomba for all its wierd and frustrating cleaning patterns still does a good job, and I personally find it easier to pick up the roomba and set it to clean a room and forget it for 30 minutes while I do something else. No more pushing the vacuum around or unplugging and re plugging in the vacuum. I can't wait for some of the 980's features to become standard. I like the floor mapping and the wifi connection features. I'm excited to see how much smarter these things will get, but I'm pretty happy with the current model. If you're new to roombas, I recommend the 650. It has all the essential features and none of the optional stuff they charge hundreds for. My future self is so happy not having to vacuum!

Santa brought us a refurbed Roomba 650 for Christmas and we love this thing. In some ways, I wish that this was a higher end unit, but it's just more bells and whistles. The amazing thing is what I see in the waste container every time we use the unit. We have five (yes, five) cats, and two of them shed unmercifully, and we aren't the neatest ourselves. The hair removal is really quite good, and the dust filter's build up tells me that smaller things (dander, dust, tiny pieces of dirt from shoes, etc.) are also being picked up pretty efficiently. It's very common for me to have piles of magazines or books on the floor. Roomba is both deft and clumsy in navigating around these obstacles, and kind of neat to watch, but also annoying. It likes to bump into table legs repeatedly while it explores how to get around the obstruction, and it seems to really enjoy returning to little cubbys that need very little cleaning, while ignoring or just making a quick pass over some more open areas. For reasons that only my wife understands, we even have a throw rug on top of carpeting in the living room, and Roomba will stumble a little bit, but won't get caught up by the edge. Two unexpected things that sort of make sense. First of all, even though Roomba is supposed to return to its cradle and recharge when it runs down, that just doesn't work for us, but the layout of our house (we keep Roomba's cradle in the kitchen under a bar overhang) is such that the Roomba homing signal is never seen by the unit. If we had line of sight placement, I think that it would return. BTW, my first location was under a living room table, but the darkness of the carpet impeded the sensors for some reason. Secondly, you really need to clean the waste receptacle after EVERY use. It's very small, and it works so well (remember, five cats!) that it's full after every use. We got some replacement air filters and the whirling side brushes, which are consumable items under normal use, but so far the originals are in good shape and everything is working well. The house is cleaner with less work, and the cats aren't so much freaked out as annoyed. No luck yet in getting any of them to ride the doggone thing.
Almost love it

UPDATE: Now that I have lived with the Roomba for awhile, I fell out of love with it. It's no longer cute how it goes back and forth, in and around that clump of hair that I still have to pick up later. It's propensity to get stuck, over and over, in the same spot five or six times in one session so I have to go free it up has lost its luster. The two hours it takes to run through 850 square foot usually pushing a clump of hair seems longer as it drones on, occasionally lapsing into insistent whining as it tries to make it over the threshold of the kitchen for the umpteenth time. I bought a BISSELL Zing Bagged Canister Vacuum, Purple, 4122 - Corded on Amazon - 1/6th the price and takes me 15 minutes to do a far better job. While that does seem like work and misses the point of the Roomba, the dozen times or more that I have to get up and free, move, empty or otherwise curse at the little robot vacuum, easily makes the case for a standard vacuum. ORIGINAL: I've had the Roomba for a little over a week now and I have mixed feelings. I adopted a rescue German Shepherd that has rocked my cozy little world. Hair everywhere!!! When twice daily dust-mopping still didn't prevail in the shedding wars, I started warming up to the idea of an automatic vacuum. I have hardwood floors throughout my house and one would think those would be easy to clean, but I would finish sweeping or mopping the whole house and then come across another clump of hair. Argh! So, Otter Creek Trading is great to work with so I have no complaints there. I'm not really sure I can complain about the Roomba as it does vacuum underneath the beds and I never did that before! However, there are some limitations. I'm a software programmer, so I think about how I would program the Roomba and it doesn't do that. Potato - Puhtahto. I read the manual and it describes how it approaches covering a room and that makes sense but then this thing keeps coming back to a room it already covered and goes over the same spots over and over. That wouldn't be such a big deal but as it covers the same ground over and over, the chances of it getting stuck increase. I work in my second bedroom. Cables are a reality with the various computers and the Roomba has all sorts of issues with cables. I've had to start setting up barriers in front of the desk to keep the machine from getting stuck. All fine, but now those areas need to be cleaned manually. My sectional couch sits fairly close to the floor. The clearance underneath is 3 1/2" and the Roomba won't fit. Another area that needs to be cleaned manually. An ottoman in the bedroom has clearance of just over 3 3/4" and the Roomba mostly fits under that until it hits that one spot that dips a little lower and the little vac is down for the count. Sometimes it can work its way free but mostly it just gets itself stuck more. The Roomba has a self docking feature that mostly works. One day it kept trying to go home and even passed right past the docking station until it did a 180 and headed to the back of the house. I checked all the things the manual advised and wasn't seeing any of the problems it described. It was just stupid that day I guess. I haven't been able to check the docking feature since then as it keeps getting stuck and I just put it on the dock myself. Even with all of those annoyances, I do feel that I'm better armed in this war against dog hair. The floors are definitely cleaner overall and while the Roomba takes a good hour and a half or so to cover my two bedroom bungalow (provided it doesn't get stuck) I'm happy that I'm not the one vacuuming.
Update not so happy now....Sure did a good job on both bare and carpeted floors, better entertainment value!

This thing was so entertaining to watch it work we were so disappointed when it had a problem on day two. It runs from the kitchen bare hardwood floor, over the transition strip that is fairly high, and to the medium pile carpet without so much as a groan or hesitation. It simply lifts itself up to make more height room to step up to the carpet and just keeps moving. It readjusts to the carpet pile height and moves on to the next cleaning job in another room. Not too loud as some reviews might suggest at all, certainly not like a typical vacuum, must less. Being an engineer I followed this thing like a toddler going out of sight to see what was next. The pattern of its cleaning decision making was perplexing, no human like up and return back side by side path travel. It just went in what seemed crazy random paths but is got everything cleaned up when it decided it was done and went to find its charging station like a puppy to its bed when it was tired. Great cleaning and lots of power. Even the kitchen kick board area where all the crumbs end up were all cleaned up. It went under the chairs and table legs like it had no fear and was so gentle on the obstacles it would not harm even the most delicate floor dwelling items. Up to here it is 5 star product.... But the brush that spins to clean the edges quit on day two. No problem returning it, Amazon sent a UPS pickup the next day and we had the new one on the way the same day, we will have it later today. Can't wait, like the product, it just had a burp. By the way the refurbished Roomba does have the words refurbished on the box, but saving some money on one is not a problem for me or my wife even as a gift. Amazon and the manufacturer stood behind this right away! No charge for return or re-delivery. Update. 1/3/16. So there was no option to order a replacement in the return item request on Amazon after this unit failed on day 2. Fast pickup, but the replacement cost me an added $40..00 to reorder. I should have had the opportunity to just get a replacement like any other returned item, bus as I said, that option was not even available. But I could have ordered all I wanted for and added $40.00. I received an initial two day delivery of 12/30 which was expected as a Prime Member, today it is 1/3/16 and no replacement, I tracked the delivery and see it will be as late as 1/6. So I 'get to pay' an added $40.00 and wait nearly two weeks to get the replacement? Seems I'm getting ripped off by both the manufacturer and Amazon on this one.
