Still working great after a year

Great lock from kwikset, easy install. I used to use Schlage but have switched to kwikset due to Schlage quality problems. Kwikset seems to be better these days.

Worst digital lock I’ve used
By Susan on Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2024
I usually purchase the Kwikset 955 for all my external doors and have used on over 15 doors. They are easy to use and work flawlessly. The one time I had a problem the customer service was fabulous. This lock unfortunately does not get any accolades.I was forced to buy this set up because the door I was reusing had 2 holes which had been previously cut preventing me from using the 955 with the built in handle. Starting with the aesthetics, it’s big, bulky and clunky looking, nothing refined about it. The installation was ok, however the interior slide cap is so difficult to get off to get to the batteries and to reset the lock that my door is now scratched up. BTW, the only directions received in the box were in Spanish, no English instructions were included. The programming is not as easy as the 955 and took a bit to figure out the Spanish. It’s very unforgiving if you don’t push the buttons fast enough and then you have to start your programming over again. One of the worst things is the self locking feature. On the 955 you have a finger turn that when it’s vertical it self locks either after you enter the code to get in OR when you leave the house and close the door behind you it locks automatically, can’t get any more easy or brainless! In the horizontal position the lock remains open so you can come and go without needing the code, this is great if working in the yard or access the patio while you’re cooking, have kids in and out, etc. once you turn vertically again, it automatically goes back into the self locking mode. This one however is an all-or nothing problem. You have to enter a programming code to turn the self locking off and on. If you want the lock to remain open you need to reprogram it. Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it is majorly inconvenient and frustrating. So if you go into the garage for a quick something and it’s in self locking mode, with the door open it will activate the self lock, meaning it throws the deadbolt.. Into the air. Now you have to reach around and manually unlock or you have to enter the code in order to physically close the door. If you enter the programming mode and turn the self locking off, now you have to remember to either reprogram or manually lock the door. You also cannot set up as many codes as with the 955. So it makes setting a code for different family members impossible. For me this lock has no redeeming qualities and unless you have no other choice I would not recommend this. Stick with the Kwikset 955. I’ve used them for over 15 years, they are easy to use, easy for all family members to understand and use, they are versatile to meet many needs and they are dependable. I wish I could return the mechanism immediately and buy something different.
